1 INTRODUCTION
, in partnership with the , is currently
planning to develop its upstream production facilities and infrastructure to meet a target of
1.2MMBOPD of production in the oil field in . The field consists of two
primary reservoirs, and , which will be developed as separate projects. It is envisaged
that the reservoir will produce up to 650MBOPD of the 1.2MMBOPD targeted from the entire
field. Presently the development is in the Concept phase of project execution and design.
Construction of the preliminary production facilities for the reservoir is currently underway.
WorleyParsons has been contracted to execute the Pre-FEED or SELECT phase of the
Development Project. The main focus of this phase will be to frame and assess each of the concept
development cases for the future development of the reservoir. The development cases
shall include evaluation of options for wells, gathering systems, gas and water reinjection, gas and
water treatment, a light oil export pipeline and tank farm upgrades, tie-ins to the natural gas liquids
and gas export systems and further expansion of supporting facilities and infrastructure as necessary.
The Project aims to produce a detailed Decision Support Package identifying the preferred design
options, and comprehensive FEED ITB documents for progression of the design to the FEED phase.
1.1 Purpose
The purpose of this document is to provide a project specific RAM Study describing:
1) Determine whether the upstream production facilities can meet the minimum
System Operational Availability of 95% (Ref [1]) by considering the equipment design and
configurations, current sparing and maintenance philosophy;
2) Identify and rank system and equipment that has the most significant impact on the facility
production availability for a given production profile and propose areas for improvement;
3) Perform a series of sensitivity analyses (if required) to evaluate the design with regards to
system operational availability;
4) Identify items that are major contributions for system and equipment availability losses; and
2) System familiarization;
4) Preparation of input to the model including Reliability and Maintainability Data, assumptions
to the modelling and etc. The figures shall be discussed and agreed with ;
5) Construct Reliability Block Diagram (RBD) for the selected equipment configurations. The
facilities covered as per agreed boundaries in the Process Flow Diagram and Utility Flow

3 STUDY METHODOLOGY
The RAM methodology applied in this study is based on the British Standard, BS 5760 Reliability of
Systems, Equipment and Components (1990).
3.1 General
The study was undertaken in the following phases:
1) Define study objectives and boundary (see Section 1.2 and 1.3)
2) Identification of critical equipment and their configuration (see RBD Appendix A1/A2)
3) Preparation of input to the RAM model (see Appendix A1/A2 and B1/B2 for RBD and
Reliability & Maintainability Data Sheet);
6) Analyse the outputs from the RAM model (see Section 5.0); and
7) Report the results; provide conclusion and recommendations for further improvements in the
system availability of the current design (see Section 6.0 and 7.0).

Note:
Reliability, Availability and Maintainability (RAM) modelling is not an exact science. It is a mathematical simulation based on
Monte-Carlo techniques using a multiple-run averaging “random-number” generating software algorithm to determine down-
time event occurrence, based on statistical probabilities of failure of equipment items and statistical “average” repair times.
Values of system availability are indicative only and significant attention should be paid to the indicated values of standard
deviation illustrated by the RAM calculation software, which can be as high as 5% in some models (i.e. system availability of
94.67% ± 1.52% means that availability on the various simulation runs ranged from 93.15% to 96.19%), therefore fractional
changes in availability (less than 1.0%) can considered as negligible changes in most cases of RAM studies, depending upon
the stated Standard Deviation.
The RAM algorithm however does provide an effective “like-for-like” comparison when a single element or small group of
elements are changed for different configurations and / or reliability data to provide evaluation of their effects upon overall
system performance – “comparative designs/ sensitivity studies.”
3.4 Definitions
Before proceeding with the analysis, the definitions of several terms used in reliability studies in
general are presented here to aid the understanding of the steps involved and the results produced by
MAROS.
Terms Definition
Availability General: The ability of an item to be in a state to perform a required function, under
stated conditions at a given instant of time or over a given time interval.
NOTE: High availability can be achieved through high reliability (equipment rarely
breaks down) or maintainability (when equipment breaks down it is repaired quickly) or
a combination of both.
In other words, the proportion of total time that an item of equipment is capable of
performing its specified functions. The general observation of availability is:
Uptime
Availabili ty
Total Time
By taking different measures for uptime and downtime, different availability measures
are obtained.
Inherent availability, (Ai): It is the steady state availability when considering only the
corrective downtime of the system. It is defined as the expected level of availability for
the performance of corrective maintenance only. Inherent availability is determined
purely by the design of the equipment. Can be regarded as the Reliability (see below
for definition) of the system. It assumes that spare parts and manpower are 100%
available with no delays. It excludes logistics time, waiting or administrative downtime,
and preventive maintenance downtime. It includes corrective maintenance downtime.
Inherent availability is generally derived from analysis of an engineering design.
Inherent availability fulfills the need to distinguish expected performance between
planned shutdowns. Inherent availability is estimated as follows:
Total Uptime
Ai InherentAvailability
Total Operational Time (excluding planned shutdown)
The target for Inherent Availability for the study is not set.
Operational availability, (Ao): It is a measure of the average availability over a period

Failure Mode The effect by which a failure is observed. Within a very detailed model, a valve can
have several modes of failure, such as: fails to operate on demand, external leak etc.
A high level model of a system may include the following general failure modes:
CRT, General critical failure resulting in 100% production loss.
DEG, Degraded equipment performance, resulting in partial production loss
whilst waiting for repair and 100% loss during repair.
INC, Incipient failure. Equipment failure which did not result in immediate
production loss. The failure was found during other repair/scheduled
maintenance activities. 100% loss during repair.
UNK, No impact details recorded in database. Assumed to be no impact on
failure and 100% loss of equipment item on repair.
Failure Mode A procedure that analyses the ways a system can fail (failure modes) and determines
and Effects their impact (effect) at both the local and system levels. The analysis is always carried
Analysis out from the lowest to the highest level within the system under analysis (bottom up).
(FMEA)
Failure Rate The number of failures of an item per unit time. This can be applied to:
Observed failure rate: as computed from a sample.
Assessed failure rate: as inferred from sample information.
Extrapolated failure rate: projected to other stress levels.
Logistic Delay The waiting time associated with the procurement and transportation of: Manpower,
Tools and special equipment, and Spare parts
Maintainability The probability that a given maintenance action, for an item under stated conditions of
use, can be carried out within a given time interval. The maintenance is performed
under stated conditions and using stated procedures and resources.
Mean Time The average time between consecutive failures – calculated by dividing the cumulative
Between Failure observed time by the total number of failures.
(MTBF)
Mean Time To It is a measure of the average time taken to diagnose and restore failed equipment to
Repair (MTTR) an operational state. It does not include logistic delays.
Maintenance Equipment/personnel/spares required performing maintenance and repairing tasks.

Reliability The probability that an item can perform a required function under stated conditions for
a given period of time. The term reliability may also be used to denote the probability of
success or success ratio. It may be represented by Inherent Availability as defined.
Reliability Block A pictorial representation of the logical interdependencies (parallel or series paths)
Diagram (RBD) required for the system under analysis to function correctly.
Terms Definition

Max Capacity (100%).
Critical Equipment whose failure will have an identifiable / significant effect on system
Equipment performance.
Downtime The period of time during which an item is not in a condition to perform its
required function. When evaluating or considering the effects of downtime it
should be appreciated that:
The downtime of an item will include active maintenance time and delays due to
awaiting spares, labor, facilities, movement, etc.
Unless otherwise stated, the downtime due to failure is considered to commence
at the instant the item is deemed to have failed.

Production Efficiency
Predicted Achieved Production
Production Efficiency 100%
Required Production
The Production Efficiency is one of the main system performance indicators
expressing the achieved production as a percentage of the required production.
Event The basic component of MAROS model. An event may be unscheduled
(equipment failure), scheduled (predefined frequency and duration) or may occur
as the consequence of other events (conditional event).
Maximum The maximum allowable capacity rating of the branch either expressed as an
Capacity absolute value as a percentage of the design capacity or as a boost factor (>1)
expressed as a multiple of the normal capacity.
Normal Capacity The capacity rating of the branch relative to the design capacity of the system
(which is nominally 100%).
Outage Period of time during which there is a complete production stoppage.
Production Production lost or deferred due to equipment outages caused by events within the
Losses model.
The RBD’s set up in MAROS are included in Appendix A1/A2. For all equipment that has redundancy,
it is assumed that there is only sufficient equipment on line to allow 100% throughput. Hence, for
system with 2x100% equipment, it is assumed that one item is running and one is on standby. More
detail on failure modes together with the assumed failure rates and active repair times are identified in
the Reliability & Maintainability (R&M) Datasheet included in Appendix B1/B2.

The design capacity is set as per production flow rate and constant over the specified period (all
producing wells are required to function during normal operation). The model does not taken into
account the flow rate decline over time or when additional wells are brought on line. This assumption
has no bearing in the determination of probability of a system to perform as expected; however it will
help provide indication on the likelihood of the system to meet expected production. If additional wells
are to be brought in some time in future, that will represent excess capacity for the system to meet
demand, which could increase overall system efficiency.
4.3 Maintenance
4.3.1 Spares
It is assumed that all critical equipment and spares required to affect repairs to failed
equipment will normally be stored at the onshore warehouse facility. Thus, the spare parts
on the critical equipment are readily available to maintenance personnel.
Spares replenishment program is in place, i.e. new spare will be acquired whenever the
existing spare has been consumed.
It is assumed that all required planned maintenance (predictive and preventive inclusive
inspection, condition monitoring, overhauls etc) activities are completed as per established
maintenance schedule, and such activities are not deferred by significant periods of time.
Any regulatory required inspections and recertification of equipment shall be carried out
during each facility annual shutdown (if any). In this RAM simulation, the first shutdown is
planned 15 months after the commissioning, and the subsequent inspection frequency is set
at 36 months (maximum allowed; provided that the facility has good Risk Based Inspection
system and Asset Integrity Programme).

Only Critical and Degraded failures have been considered in the study. It is assumed that Incipient
and Unknown failure modes will be repaired alongside Critical and Degraded failures and they do not
cause additional downtime or loss of production in the nominated design.
Critical failures (CRT) are failures that cause immediate loss of production capacity (or part thereof).
Degraded Failures (DEG) are failures that result in partial loss of production capacity but do not bring
production to halt. Table 3 below shows failure type and their capacity loss contribution upon event
initiation.
Table 3: Failure Type and Their Contribution to Capacity Loss
Failure Type Capacity Loss at Failure (%) Capacity Loss at Repair (%)
Failure due to PSV’s, control valves and shutdown valves are excluded in this RAM Study. Sub-
Systems under package are also excluded in this modelling.
Capacity Loss at Failure and Repair for equipments in Flash Gas Compression Sub-System in Gas
Compression System for both Gas Injection Concept and Water Injection Concept is set at 0% as the
handling gas capacity is very low. Hence, it is identified as non-critical to the production, thus any
equipment failure related to this unit is considered negligible and has no direct impact to the
production losses.
Failure rates for production wells are also being considered in this RAM Study, but however since the
MTBF are very low (OREDA 2009, anatomy 5.8 p/g 138) it is considered negligible.

This section describes the most significant equipments/elements contributors to production losses for
Base Case 1. Elements that have been identified in this RAM Study for Base Case 1, is attached in
Appendix B1 (Reliability & Maintainability Data Sheet). Table 6 summarizes the top 10 contributing
equipments towards production absolute loss for Base Case 1.
Equipments contributing most for production loss are the GTP Feed Compressor Stage 1 and 2 as
per listed above, with each contributing estimated at 0.06% Absolute Loss Mean. This is due to the
GTP Feed Gas Compression System is designed with 4x25% without redundancy, low MTBF and
high MTTR of the compressors. Most critical failures for the compressors (but not limited to) are
abnormal instrument reading, breakdown, erratic output, external leakage, fail to start/stop on
demand, high/low output, parameter deviation, overheating, spurious stop and vibration. For vessel
type, Instrument Air Receiver at Plant & Instrument Air System (GIS) contributes estimated at 0.02%
Absolute Loss Mean and Instrument Air Receiver at Plant & Instrument Air System contributes
estimated at 0.01% Absolute Loss Mean. Possible failure modes for vessels are (but not limited to)
abnormal instrument reading, external leakage, plugged/choked, structural deficiency and parameter
deviation. Details MTBF and MTTR of each equipments identified is being shown in Appendix B1.

during system life for Base Case 2. The graph is showing fluctuating pattern production efficiency in 3
years interval due to Planned Shutdown as per mentioned in earlier section.
5.3.1 System Criticality
This section describes the most significant system contributors to production losses for Base Case 2.
Figure 8 summarizes the sections or components for each category of relative losses. From the bar
chart, the top 5 most contributor of the production reliability loss is the Planned Shutdown (62.52%),
Gas Dehydration Water Dew Point System (12.06%), Butane Extraction System (4.74%), Gas
Sweetening System (3.97%) and propane Extraction System (3.36%). Detailed percentage of relative
loss and absolute loss mean of the systems is being shown in Table 7. The critical system with
compressors and gas turbine drivers or electrical motor drivers in Gas Compression System (GTP
Feed Compressor, Export Gas Compressor System and Propane Compressor System) is showing
low loss percentage as the design redundancy is adequate with 6x25% providing 2 standby trains.
Planned Shutdown is contributing 1.41% Absolute Loss Percentage.

6 CONCLUSION
Based on 2 base cases simulated by MAROS, both of Gas Injection Concept and Water Injection
Concept System Operational Availability meets the minimum target of 95%.
System Operational Availability resulted in 97.57% and 97.75% for Gas Injection Concept and Water
Injection Concept respectively. Both cases Planned Shutdown is modelled for 14 days is showing
same unavailability result of 1.41%. Base Case 1 for Gas Injection Concept System Operational
Availability is lower than Base Case 2 for Water Injection Concept due to GTP Feed Gas Compressor
System is designed as 4x25% compared to 6x25% for Water Injection Concept.
In subsystems level, top 3 most contributing towards production lost that can be concluded for Gas
Injection Concept are GTP Feed Gas Compression System, Gas Dehydration Water Dew Point
System and Plant & Instrument Air System. Top 3 most contributing subsystems towards production
loss for Water Injection Concept are Gas Dehydration Water Dew Point System, Butane Extraction
System and Gas Sweetening System.
In equipment level, items contributing impact towards production loss are Compressors for Gas
Injection Concept and vessels for Water Injection Concept identified as Dehydration Contactors &
Overhead Separator at Gas Dehydration Water Dew Point System, Low Temperature Separators at
Gas HC Dew Point System and Deethaniser/Depropaniser/Debutaniser Reflux Drums. Equipment
level Absolute Loss Mean percentage is not more than 0.07% for both cases.
Equipments with low MTBF and high MTTR such as compressors gas turbines drivers and electric
drivers in Water Injection Concept are well designed with redundancies and not surfaced as major
contributors of production loss.

7 RECOMMENDATION
Based from this RAM study, here are some of the recommendations to consider:
1. To keep within strong provisions of the Preventive and Predictive Maintenance of the
Compressors and motor driver either electric driven or Gas Turbine, especially in GTP
Feed Gas, which operating without redundancy for Gas Injection Concept. Those
activities will help to avoid compressor failures from affecting production efficiency.
Potential failure modes such as (but not limited to) abnormal instrument reading,
breakdown, erratic output, external leakage, fail to start/stop on demand, high/low output,
parameter deviation, overheating, spurious stop, vibration and others.
2. To provide redundancy in GTP Feed Gas Compressor for Gas Injection Concept
whereby currently running 4x25% without redundancy.
4. To keep within strong provisions of the Preventive and Predictive Maintenance of level,
pressure or temperature instruments for vessels in the system especially Contactors,
Separators and Reflux Drum. Common potential failure mode from OREDA for vessel
equipment is abnormalities in instrument reading. Such activities could improve the
overall production efficiency of the upstream production facility.
6. Since this is Pre FEED RAM study, it is highly recommended to perform RAM Study
during subsequent phases.
