OBJECTIVES:

make an unoccupied and occupied bed.

What is Bed Making?
➢ Bed making is one important procedure for
nursing profession and techniques, we
prepare various type of bed for patient or
clients to ensure safety, comfort and useful
position for a particular condition.
➢ Bed making is an art, Improve your
nursing skills through journey as a nurse.

The general principles to be followed in making any type of
bed are:

NURSING ALERT
❑ Do not let your uniform touch the bed and the floor no to
contaminate yourself.
❑ Never throw soiled linens on the floor not to contaminate the floor.
❑Staying one side of the bed until one step completely made save steps
and time to do effectively and save the time.
Types of Bed Making Procedures:
❑ UNOCCUPIED
Used when the client can get out of bed, is left open with the top
sheets folded down.
A. Open bed – the top covers are folded back so the patient can easily
get back into the bed.
B. Closed bed – the top sheet blankets and bedspreads are dawn up to
the head of the mattress and under the pillow; this is prepared in a
hospital room before a new client is admitted to the room.
C. Surgical bed - is a special type of bed made for the patient who is
coming from the operation or from another procedure that
requires anesthesia. The bed is made in such a way as to make it
easy to transfer the unconscious or weak patient from a stretcher
to the bed.

unoccupied bed:

✓ Mattress (1)
✓ Bed Sheets
a. Bottom sheet (1)
b. Top sheet (1)
✓ Pillow (1)
✓ Pillowcase (1)
✓ Absorbent pad (1)
✓ Draw Sheet (1)
✓ Blanket (1)
SUPPLIES AND EQUIPMENT
✓ Savlon water or Dettol water in basin
✓Sponge cloth (4): to wipe with solution (1)
to dry (1)
* When bed make is done by two nurses, sponge cloth is
needed two each.
✓ Kidney tray or paper bag (1)
✓ Laundry bag 0r bucket (1)
✓ Disposal gloves
Types of Bed Making Procedures:

Used when the client is not allowed out
of bed.

➢To provide clean and comfortable bed
for patient
➢To reduce the risk of infection by
maintaining a clean environment
➢To prevent bed sores by ensuring there
are no wrinkles to cause pressure points
Procedure for making an
occupied bed:
1. Check the client’s identification and condition.
2. Explain the purpose and procedure to the client.
3. Perform hand hygiene
4. Prepare all required equipments and bring the articles
to the bedside.
5. Close the curtain or door to the room. Put screen.
6. Remove the client’s personal belongings from bed-
side and put then into the bed-side locker or safe
place.
