EP/HSE RECOMMENDATIONS
1. Ensure to clearly identify the type of battery used on site in order to implement suitable and
sufficient maintenance and operating procedures:
a. Maintenance free: does not require any maintenance.
b. Maintenance free accessible: has caps to inspect fluid levels and the possibility to add
distilled water to prevent battery dry-out.
c. Maintenance required (as per manufacturer).

2. Recommendations and maintenance specifications provided by the supplier shall be applied to

avoid “gassing” process: some equipment such as batteries or electrochlorinators are likely to
produce hydrogen by electrolysis. In a downgraded situation, such as an increase of hydrogen
production, or a lack of ventilation or detection, hydrogen can accumulate and ignite.

3. A safety awareness bulletin related to battery explosions with Maintenance Free batteries has
been issued by Caterpillar, ensure that all recommendations are implemented.
