Group A (10*5=50)

1. (a) Pure substances have various properties and they differ with state. Discuss how intensive properties of water are
being used in steam table. Also, explain why are there three sections in steam tables? [5]
(b) Find the specific volume of wet steam at 18 bar with dryness fraction (x) = 0.85, by using steam table. [5]

2. How can measuring a body temperature be explained with the help of Zeroth law of thermodynamics? Also, give
examples of reversible and irreversible processes with the help of state diagram, and elaborate on the limitation of
reversible process in practical life. [3+3+4]

3. (a) How can critical point and triple point be plotted in P-T diagram for water? What are the significances of having
them plotted in the graph? Will the value change if they are plotted in T-s diagram? [5]
(b) Air in a closed vessel of fixed volume 0.15 m3 exerts pressure of [last two digits of your exam roll number] bar at
250 °C. If the vessel is cooled so that the pressure falls to [1.1 multiply by last one digit of your roll number] bar,
determine the final Temperature. [5]

4. (a) How can heat and work be related? [2]

(b) Can they be converted from one form to another? If yes, then which law governs this transformation? [2]
(c) What is sign convention that is widely used in field of thermal science? And, mention them for the case of boiler
and compressor. [6]

5. How are Turbine and Compressor differentiated based on their heat and work transfer model operating under Steady
flow energy equation? What are the assumptions that are made while formulating the SFEE for Steam turbine? [10]

OR

5. Discuss the working of nozzle with energy transfer under steady flow condition. Draw a schematic diagram for a nozzle
system with proper illustration of inlet and exit condition. [10]

Group B (20*1=20)

6. (a) A power plant has a system working based on Rankine cyle. The boiler has 3.5 MPa at higher pressure region and
temperature range is 450oC and 50 oC. Find the efficiency of the plant and compare that with Carnot efficiency. [10]
(b) Describe the working of Heat Pump and Refrigerator with the help of schematic diagram. Also, explain the second
law of thermodynamics based on heat pump, refrigeration and entropy. [10]
