Summary:
A industrial tour to Shahzad Textile Mills Sheikhupura on 25th October, 2017 for the 5 th
semester students of BSc Textile Technology, University Of Agriculture, Faisalabad. Shahzad Textile Mills
Limited having highly sophisticated and modern spinning machinery. The products are 100% cotton, Blended,
Pure Synthetic, and combed, carded & Double Yarn. The main purpose behind the tour was to make students
aware about how different machining processes and machines work in Blow room and carding. We focused
on importance of blow room, carding machine and canning. We were oriented by the focal person who
described everything related to our field. First of all a brief introduction was given about the company, its
manufacturing processes and safety measurements. Blow room was the starting of the spinning operation
where the fiber were opened, cleaned, mixed and then even feed to card. The whole machine was subject
to suction and the dust was collected in special filters; the material, on the other hand, undergoing
contemporaneously, the rotary action of the cylinder and suction along the operating width, effects a helical
movement around the drum and exits from the side opposite to that on which it entered. It was then
transferred by the delivery hopper into the transportation conduit. Carding is a mechanical process that
include individual fiber opening , cleaning and fibers orientation to produce a continuous web or sliver
suitable for further processing. Main objectives of tour was to learn practically about blow room and card.
Moreover, to see the industrial environment to develop and enhance professional awareness and
communication skills and in enhancing the University learning experience through involvement in industrial
field, thus enabling students to relate theoretical concepts with practical situations which is essential for
professional Textile Technologist.

Introduction:
Shahzad Textile Mills Limited is basically a spinning mills, and give its share in local and foreign export market as well.
Mills is producing impressive quality of yarn products in reasonable prices and exceptional professional services. Blow
room of mills is equipped with all type of essential machinery required for cotton and polyester with chute and lap
feed technology. Carding section also equipped with highly sophisticated carding machines and coiling system .

Certification ISO 9001:2008:

For production of quality yarn and satisfaction of clients the Company has obtained the latest version of ISO 9001-
2008. After verification of management system and complete checking of mills Certification is renewed every year. This
process of certification helps to boost the reputation and profit of mills by winning confidence of customers by
producing quality products.
Operational processes :
 Blow room
 Carding
 Drawing
 Combing
 Roving
 Ring frame

Tour objectives:
 To enhance knowledge of students by involvement in industrial field.
 To make practical concepts more clear about blow room and carding.
 To see formal work environment and industrial environment as a professional textile technologist.
 To enhance communication skills and professional awareness.
 To acquire experience to understand industrial set up related to textile spinning mills.

Our point of interest:

We visited blow room and carding section for enhancing practical approach of our course Pre-spinning I
Blow room:
Blow room is the first step of spinning process where the opening, cleaning and mixing of material takes place
and then even feed of material is passed to the card.

Cotton blow room line:

 Manual bale opening:
In manual bale opening compressed bales of cotton are opened
manually. To assure progressive opening and for removal of
other fiber contaminations.

 Automatic bale opener:

Manually opened material is pass to the bale opener where the
mechanical opening of fiber flocks with the help of roller take
place and the material is opened into small flocks. The further
transport of fiber flock is done with air stream through suction
ducts. Aim is to achieve flocks weight from 0.02 to 0.03 g.

 Condenser:
Condenser is use to transport continuous and constant supply of
material from one machine to other machine through suction.
This machine also remove dust from material. Fiber flocks from
bale opener is passed through it and trash is removed.

 Sandwich blending:
Blending of material to get homogeneous material for further
processing. Different grades of cotton is placed in layers like
sandwich having moisture content approximately 10%.

 Metal detector:
From opening machine (blendomat) material is pass to next
machine which extract stone and metal particles using
magnetic field. After receiving signal material is feed to waste
container which is equipped with fire extinguisher.

 Pre-cleaner:
It is the cleaning machine have task to open cotton fiber flocks and eliminate trash particles as well as
foreign fibers. Cleaning action depends on the clothing of cylinder. Grid bars are also arranged below
the cylinder for removal of extraneous matter which fall on revolving cylinder having rubber flaps.

 Multi- mixer:
Perfect and homogeneous blend is achieved. The blend is blown by material transport fan and convey
into the feed duct above the hopper.

It is filled only to just below the photo cell situated in the

adjacent hopper, then the closing flap of the second hopper is
opened by push button operation

Objectives of multi mixer:

i)Economy
ii)Processing performance
iii)functional properties

 Fine cleaner:
To open and clean the cotton. Due to collision of cotton tufts with rapidly revolving pin cylinder against
grid bars. Impurities from cotton is extracted and passed through spacing of grid bars. Cylinder of fine
cleaner have finer clothing .
 Foreign fiber detector:
The function of securomat is to remove pp, jute and colored material.
Special cameras are install for colored and other contamination. Air
jet nozzle are used for this purpose. These contaminations are
through out with the help of air pressure.

 Waste from blow room :

Blow room remove about 60-70% of the total trash containing vegetable matters, stones, other fibers,
heavy particles etc.

 Chute Feed System:

Chute feed is a system of feeding small tufts of cotton fibers directly from blow room to a series of cards, arranged
in a circuit through pneumatic pipe.

Polyester blow room line:

 Manual bale opening:
Manual opening of bales and mixing of useable wastes such as sliver
 Automatic Bale opener:
 Parcopine opener:
 Scutcher:
For lap formation which is feed to the card and opening of material. Lap is the even
sheet of fibers compressed evenly and pass to the card. Following are the elements of scutcher

Conveyer belt

Carding:
Carding is the process of opening the material to individual fibers, fiber
parallelization, remove impurities, remove short fibers, disentanglement of neps and sliver formation.

Operating zones at card:

 Material feed :
Elements of feed zone are feed roller for feeding of material,
Taker-in/licker-in for opening and cleaning of material and mote knife
for removal of trash.

 Carding zone :
Carding zone include stationary flats, revolving flats and main cylinder which open, parallelize and
disentangle fibers also eliminate short fibers.

 Doffing zone:
Doffing zone include doffer, crush roll, brush roll, apron roll and
sliver formation

sliver formation

Coiling:
Two rotary movements are required for cycloidal coiling of the sliver. On the one hand, the rotatable plate
must be rotated above the can, while the can itself must rotate, at a considerably slower rate, below the
plate. A sliver tube is provided on the plate as a fixed part to guide the sliver from
the cylinder rollers into the can.

Waste from carding:

Waste from card have trash content and short fibers.

Conclusion:
It is concluded that during the tour we visited the blow room and carding section and it was helpful in enhancing the
technical knowledge about the industrial field which is essential for a professional textile technologist, thus enabling
students to relate theoretical concepts with practical knowledge. It also make us more clear about industrial
environment to enhance the professional awareness and communication skills. While going through the entire
industrial visit the co-operation is found to be very well organized, developed and a modern industry on every walk
of its production, administration and management aspects.
