Practicing Sanitation in The Salon Industry

Sanitation

- Process of providing services and facilities, which public hygiene.


- It provides a minimum level of cleanliness, protecting public health by preventing the spread of some but not all bacteria and
fungi.

Requirements:

1. A sanitary permit shall be procured from the local health authority before their operation.

2. They shall be maintained clean and sanitary at all times.

3. No person shall be employed to service customers without a health certificate issued by the local health authority.

Correct Sanitary Practices:

1. Working personnel shall wash their hands with soap and water before servicing customers.

2. They shall wear clean working garments.

3. They shall not smoke nor eat while working.

4. Implements of their trade shall be cleaned and disinfected before and after use.

5. Customers shall be supplied with clean and fresh towels, drapes, and other linen necessary.

6. Precautionary measures to prevent disease transmission shall be observed when serving customers showing any form of
dermatoses.

Decontamination of Nail Care Tools and Equipment:

Sanitation – is the process of removing dirt and foreign material that could harbor microbes from an object by washing with soap
and water.

Disinfection – is the process of decreasing harmful germs to a level that they do not cause infection.

It can be done in two ways:

Thermal method – by immersing the implements in hot water.

Chemical method – by using disinfectants.

Disinfectants are chemical agents that destroy organisms on contaminated instruments or surfaces but not necessary all microbial
forms.

Sterilization – is the process of destroying all bacteria whether they are harmful or beneficial.

These are the several ways to sterilize:

- Boiling – a simple and very reliable method for inactivation of microorganisms.


- Steam sterilization – is the most common and most preferred method of sterilizing nonporous materials. Uses high-pressure
or high-temperature steam.
- Dry heat sterilization – one of the earliest forms of sterilizing nonporous implements using hot air.
- Chemical sterilization – implements are immersed or subjected in liquid or gas chemicals.

Porous implements – composed of absorbent items such as towels, cushions, abrasive files, and buffers.

Nonporous implements – consist of nonabsorbent items such as metal, glass, and fiberglass tools like metal nippers, cuticle
pushers and electric file bits.

- That pose a threat to the health of people.

- Products that are used in salons.
