CHAPTER II

METHODOLOGY

This chapter contains the research design and research method. It incorporated the

research locale, participants of the study, Instruments and Data Collection, Data Gathering and

Analysis, Data Gathering and Instruments. This chapter presents how the researchers came to the

necessary data for this study, and how these data were analyzed and interpreted in the easiest

way possible.

Research Design

The mixed method type of research was employed in this study. As widely accepted,

mixed methods research is a methodology for conducting research that involves collecting,

analyzing and integrating quantitative research. This approach to research is used when this

integration provides a better understanding of the research problem than either of each alone.

The mixed method type of research consists of qualitative and quantitative research.

Quantitative data includes close-ended information while qualitative data consists of open-ended

information. By mixing both quantitative and qualitative research and data, the researcher gains

breadth and depth of understanding and corroboration.

Relatively, the number of Settled, ongoing, and pending cases was analyzed

quantitatively. However, the qualities of choosing the lupon members, enforcement of rules and

governing laws, their conciliation efforts, and problems encountered by Katarungang

Pambarangay was analyzed qualitatively.

In this regard, the method was appropriate to this study since it aimed to determine the

effectiveness of Katarungang Pambarangay in resolving Barangay disputes.

Participants

With the use of the Convenience sampling technique, the researcher will find the

respondents of the study based on their availability and schedule to participate in the study.

Convenience sampling is a non-probability sampling method where units are selected for

inclusion in the sample because they are the easiest for the researcher to access (Nikolopoulou,

2022)

Moreover, Convenience sampling is appropriate when the nature of the research design,

aims, and objectives can only be met with a small number of individuals as primary data sources.

(Nikolopoulou, 2022) further stated that Convenience can be used due to geographical proximity,

availability at a given time, or willingness to participate in the research.

The following are the criteria when choosing the participants of the study: any Barangay,

Chairman, and their Secretary, who is scheduled is available at the time of the research, and

Barangay in Nueva Ecija Since Katarungang Pambarangay is implemented in all of the Barangay

in The Philippines.

The number of participants depends on the availability of the Barangay chairman, and

Secretary in any Barangay in the Province of Nueva Ecija.

Research Locale

This research was conducted at Talavera, Nueva Ecija. Talavera is a first-class

municipality in the province of Nueva Ecija and is composed of fifty-three barangays (53).
Talavera was originally a barrio in Cabanatuan City. It was known as "Katugian," which is a

name for a region rich in the tasty root crop "Tugue." By royal decree, Katugian was established

on November 12, 1852. La Torre, Pulong Buli (now Santo Domingo), Concepcion, and Valle

were the first barrios to make up the new town. The Governor General gave his approval to

"Talavera of the Crown of the Princess" on February 17, 1853. This study was conducted during

the first semester of the academic year 2022–2023.

Instruments and Data Collection

The following instruments and processes were administered throughout the whole

investigation:

The consent form or letter of authorization was the initial instrument of the

researchers. It serves as approval from the captain of barangay Talavera, Cabanatuan City

allowing the researchers to conduct a research project. This letter gives the third party a

breakdown of the process they need to observe. Also, it will act as evidence of the relevant

required details for someone to act on your behalf (WTO definition, types, 2022).

The researchers will used Face-to-face (F2F) interview as one of the oldest and most

widely used methods of conducting primary research. Thus, Face-to-face (F2F) interview allow

for more in-depth data collection, increases the response rate and comprehensive understanding

from the participants. (Napoleon, 2017)

A semi-structured interview was the secondary means of collecting the intended data

from the participants. The participants in this study were any Barangay, its Chairman, and its

Secretary who were scheduled to be available at the time of the research. According to Fauvelle

(2020), as the name implies, semi-structured interviews are more regimented than free interviews
but more adaptable than structured interviews. An interview guide or open-question

questionnaire, which has a series of predetermined questions, acts as a framework for the semi

structured interviews. It can be used by the interviewer to advance the conversation with the

subject and make sure that the discussion stays on the project's predetermined and planned path.

This method of interview is the most typical one used in qualitative research because it combines

rigor in the themes and issues covered with flexibility in the exchange. As a result, semi-

structured interviews provide participants the chance to elaborate on certain themes that come up

in the conversation with the researchers. The goal is to gather viewpoints and remarks that may

not have been discovered during the planning stages but that will undoubtedly affect how the

project is carried out moving forward (Fauvelle, 2020).

Data Gathering and Analysis

The data analysis which was applied in analyzing the following problems is:

1. The effectiveness of Katarungang Pambarangay in terms of:

1.1 Conciliation efforts

1.2 Application of the legal procedure

1.3 Choosing the lupon members

1.4 Settled, on-going and pending cases

2. The problems encountered encountered by the Katarungang Pambarangay in settling Barangay

disputes.

Thematic Analysis.
A common qualitative data analysis technique is useful for comprehending experiences,

ideas, or actions across a data set (Kiger and Varpio, 2020).

Data Gathering and Instruments

Preparation. The researchers of this study prepared the following: first, a letter to the

mayor of the municipality asking permission to conduct this study; and second, an open-ended

question that would serve as the foundation for semi-structured interviews with research

participants.

Administration. The materials were utilized by the participants during the second

semester of the academic year 2022–2023. The guided questions were used by the researchers to

gather data. The researchers conducted the interview in Barangay Talavera, Nueva Ecija, using a

face-to-face or personal interaction method.

Evaluation. On the materials and resources created for the study, an expert provided

observations and suggestions through careful judgment based on the study. In response to these
comments and suggestions, new materials and tools were made to make the whole process

better.
