I. INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

A beach resort is a full-service vacation accommodation establishment with access to a

private beach that is situated by the water. The beach is where most visitors hang out. A Beach

Resort differs from smaller-scale city hotels, B&Bs, or boutique hotels in that it provides a wide

range of services and amenities and frequently incorporates entertainment and recreational

activities.

A beach resort can satisfy the majority of a visitor's needs while they are still on the

property because it is an independent establishment.

Booking a Beach Resort has the advantage of putting the guest close to the beach while

also providing excellent all-around service on the property. Offering a kids' club, an evening

entertainment program, shopping, etc., it is convenient for families. When a resort is situated

distant from a city, it offers all the necessary infrastructure (it is a "village" itself). Beach Resorts

are frequently chosen as wedding venues (with a beach setting ceremony, wedding planner on side,

a photographer, a hairdresser and a beauty salon etc.).

Beach resorts develop from their natural surroundings as a result of the spread of lodging

and other recreational amenities. They become more urbanized and lose their natural traits as they

become larger. Some beach resorts were transformed into cities in less than two decades,

illustrating how quickly a resort may move from a natural to an urban setting. Governments,

businesses, and job seekers can all benefit economically from the numerous domestic and foreign

tourists who frequent seaside resorts. Rapid urbanization dynamics are typically accompanied by

significant shifts in the social, environmental, and political contexts. It is well known that the

growth of modern beach resorts has both positive and negative repercussions; less well understood,

however, are the processes of evolution and synergism of its composite ingredients.

Every resort has an own strategy for luring visitors, but Subic Island in Matnog was

renowned for its understated, exquisite, and abundant allure. Natural resources, cultural heritage,

and other resources are abundant there. The province of Sorsogon was a popular beach destination

in the nation. The location, which lies along Sorsogon City, features a natural setting with dense

flora, a white sand beach, irregular contours, and pockets of rocky boulder formation that visitors

are sure to appreciate. Visitors can only get to the island using a motorboat or a banca because they
lack a source of electric power, a portable water system, and accessible roads for a public

transportation system.

The gross national income contribution from the tourism sector to our nation's economy

accounts for a significant portion of that expansion. Along with this, it will also provide

employment opportunities for others in the areas of construction, employment, investments, boat

rentals, nearby businessmen, and the introduction of the town's well-known specialties in this Hotel

and Beach Resort Complex.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

One of the biggest sources of foreign exchange for the nation is tourism. According to the

Department of Tourist, the tourism sector has made an average yearly contribution to GNI of more

than ten percent (10%). Join forces with the growing number of international investors and the

abundance of natural attractions located within the archipelago to launch a project that will

increase foreign tourism to our nation.

This study aims to ascertain how the natural beauty of marine ornamentation and wildlife

might be used as a design principle in every structure. The beach resort will gain a positive

reputation as a result, making it a destination worth visiting. One of the biggest sources of foreign

exchange for the nation is tourism. According to the Department of Tourist, the tourism sector has

made an average yearly contribution to GNI of more than ten percent (10%). The plethora of

natural attractions in the archipelago, together with the growing number of international investors,

will help our nation's tourism industry.

The proposed project intends to meet the industry's demand for more tourist destinations.

For the guests, it would offer a variety of amenities and facilities. It would be a popular tourist

destination and support the government's initiatives related to environmental issues. The beach

resort will have an advantage over other resorts due to the natural beauty and overall design

concept of the site.

This study is limited only in studying the lot area, the surrounding environment, and learning about

the island's topographic, survey, and topographical maps, as well as its surface drainage, slope,

and vegetation maps. The effectiveness of this study depends in large part on the data that is

acquired.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This research study is significant to those who will benefit before, during, and after

this study. Those people are as follows:

The Department of Tourism. They are the ones who are familiar with the requirements for

the nation's tourist destinations. They are aware of several techniques that can enhance a location's

beauty. By doing so, the department will receive credit for the study's success.

My fellow architecture students. This study will help my fellow students and able to

share each other’s idea to create a very good concept that will showcase our own tourist spot here

in Sorsogon. Also, this study may be a subject for feedbacks so that the researcher will be able to

know what to improve in this study.

Future Researchers. The data and information from this study can be used to establish a

baseline, lay the groundwork, and provide suggestions for this potential student and study. to

picture the optimal and practical strategy for the specified location. They can use this study as a

guide for their upcoming investigations.

METHODOLOGY

The study uses descriptive research which aims to describe the data and its characteristics.

This kind of research methodology entails the steps of examining the concept and flow of the study

and coming up with a solution to the issues.

The first step in the process is to analyze the project's location and the guidelines that should

be followed because it will house numerous tourists from the Philippines and possibly other

countries. This was then followed by the gathering of information pertinent to the study before

developing an analysis to create the proposed study's objectives. Each step requires citations from

readily available sources that are relevant to the scheme's theme. As a result, a rigorous analysis

of the collected data will be carried out in order to provide reliable information. The results will

offer explanations and answers for the proposal's design principles.

RESEARCH BODY

Beach resorts were crucial to any vacation, but especially to summertime ones. A Beach

Resort hotel complex is a location that offers lodging, entertainment, and a tranquil setting to

tourists. Today's resorts offer the bare minimum in terms of accommodations, including

restaurants, swimming pools, and cottage and room rentals. The demand for a convenient one-stop
location for leisure and comfort among people is growing, and this is why the resort industry is

growing in popularity.

The Beach Resort is among the top tourist destinations. Because you may enjoy the hotel,

the sea, the sunset, the cuisine, the calm atmosphere, and the people using the services, a resort is

kind of like a full package. Everyone prefers a good resort, and good facilities are necessary. A

successful "beach resort" is one that satisfies all of the needs of the customers. Success in this

study would undoubtedly highlight Matnog, Sorsogon's natural attractiveness.

It will be simpler to apply the rule that public access to the resort should be allowed on a

controlled basis, including to the main attraction features because it'll be bad if the places are very

crowded and there'll be a chance that some would be irritated. The resort is not accessible by land

transportation.

There are several factors that need be taken into account when developing a beach resort,

and one of them is whether there is enough accommodation for resort staff in the surrounding

communities or whether housing will need to be built nearby so that staff can go to the resort with

ease.

RELATED LITERATURE

As other businesses, managers, and the owner must have a broad range of knowledge when

it comes to solving and dealing with potential issues that may arise along with their operation, the

resort industry is complex and difficult to manage. It gives off the impression that people should

have backup plans in place because there will be fierce competition.

The Daily Inquirer (2017) claims that given the Philippines' archipelagic geography,

tourism was early recognized as a low-hanging fruit with significant economic growth potential.

Roads connecting the country's pristine beaches and other tourism spots were thought to be all that

were required, along with encouraging the private sector to establish hotels and other tourist-

related infrastructure. Slowly but surely, the tourism sector has grown, and foreign visitors now

have more options than just the tried-and-true Boracay, Cebu, or Davao. But as a result of the

Marawi City crisis and the subsequent imposition of martial law on the entire island of Mindanao,

which has not yet been lifted after more than a month, tourism in the Philippines is now seriously

facing a different kind of threat—the perception among foreign tourists that it is not a safe

destination.

According to Ali (2015), a more favorable impression of a hotel's ambiance, staff

politeness, food and beverage offerings, performance and knowledge of the staff, reservation

services, and financial value is likely to increase customer satisfaction, which eventually results in

positive behavioral intentions like the intention to return or the intention to recommend it to others.

In order to draw in new visitors, the tourism product must satisfy the current ones. Further research

shows that domestic tourists are not entirely content with their visits to specific resort areas, which

may be seen in relation to features like health care, public transportation, and shopping.
Additionally, it has been determined that a number of variables, including the purpose of travel,

the method of payment for travel, the choice of lodging, the method of holiday organization, and

lastly, the amount of money spent by tourists, can have an impact on how satisfied visitors are with

their resort destination. Visitors who were pleased with the attributes of the destinations were

willing to enjoy and decided to return to the locations.

Numerous coastal resorts have emerged and many more are being planned worldwide as a

result of the rising demand for beach vacations. Several accounts of the physical morphology of coastal

resorts are available in this regard (Andriotis 2003a; Barrett 1958; Lavery 1971; Smith 1992a;

Stansfield and Rickert 1970; Weaver 1993), though the majority of them have concentrated on the

presence of elements like promenades, central business districts, recreational business districts, the

zoning patterns of development, the patterns of streets in relation to transport opportunities (rail

stations, air terminals).

The studies described above describe the morphology of resorts, but the bulk of them do

not place them in a historical context, therefore they do not explain the mechanisms by which

resorts are being converted to urban space.

As a result, they offer little insight into the planning initiatives that the public sector must

make throughout the stages of the resort cycle because they neither explain nor forecast the

evolution of resorts. To address these issues, Pearce thinks that "changes in morphology should be

given more attention in order that the mechanisms involved might be better understood and the

evolution of future forms more readily anticipated" (1987:177).

The tourist business has grown significantly in recent years, playing a significant role in

the economies of many nations. In addition to improving the balance of payments, it has stimulated

investment and jobs. However, stakeholders in the tourism sector frequently overlook how the

industry itself fundamentally alters the physical environment as well as the social and economic

system. Depending on how well the environment can withstand development growth and

environmental change, the rapid growth of tourism has had pronounced positive and negative

effects on the economy, society, and environment. Since it encourages modernization, cultural

change, urbanization, and the exploitation of natural and cultural resources, unchecked growth in

tourism development has come into direct conflict with the protection of distinctive local

environments in many destinations, killing the goose that laid the golden egg. This is especially
true for coastal regions, which are frequently excellent sites for vacation resorts and are more

susceptible to change due to their delicate ecosystems. Before designing facilities to function

sustainably within an ecosystem, a fundamental understanding of the natural behavior of an

ecosystem is required.

Globally, the health and vitality of coastal habitats have undergone significant changes as

a result of the rising need for coastal tourism development. Tourism development has negative

effects on the natural beauty and functionality of coastal settings because developers have not fully

recognized the complexity of coastal ecosystems. Natural resource depletion, habitat damage, a

deterioration in the quality of the air and water, and a potential decline in recreational seaside

tourism are just a few of the potential negative effects.

Strong evidence exists today that points to a global environmental disaster and the urgent

need to shift away from the existing overall trend of subpar tourism development. The 1992 Earth

Summit, which was intended to build an international action plan for balancing human need for

development and environmental preservation, echoed this desire. Since sustainable tourism

development involves careful control of site planning, building design, construction technique,

tourism management and operation systems that minimize waste, enhance resource conservation,

respect local traditions, and integrate tourism development with other economic sectors,

sustainability implementation within coastal environments has become essential to the tourism

industry (El-Halafawy, 1991).

Many communities that have discovered that traditional approaches to design, planning,

and overall tourism development are creating, rather than solving, societal and environmental

problems like congestion, sprawl, pollution, and resource overconsumption have turned to

sustainable development as an important guide. Sustainable development is defined as

"development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future

generations to meet their own needs" by the United Nations' World Commission on Environment

and Development (WCED, 1987).

Communities can utilize sustainable development as a framework to use resources more

wisely, improve the built environment, improve quality of life, and establish tourism industries

that boost the local economy while preserving the natural and cultural diversity of their

surroundings. In order for stakeholders to understand and evaluate environmental risks and
possibilities and make educated decisions about facility design and planning, sustainable design

was developed from the concept of sustainable development.

The environmental approach, which offers ecotourism as an environmentally friendly

alternative to traditional mass tourism, the economic approach, which applies the concept of

product lifecycle to tourism development to prevent tourism decline, and the social/cultural

approach, which focuses on developing a sustainable alternative that addresses environmental

impact concerns, are just a few of the many initiatives that have been made to break free from the

traditional pattern of development and provide a sustainable alternative that addresses

environmental impact concerns.

Both in developed nations like the USA and in developing nations like Egypt, the

development of sustainable beach resorts faces numerous challenges because stakeholders seem

unable to make informed decisions about sustainable design as a result of the complexity of the

sustainability issues and the absence of a comprehensive decision-making tool to support them.

Concerns with development stakeholders include the following: a) Planners with limited

perspectives who apply conventional rules and regulations to development that only take into

account a site's physical densities and capacities; b) Designers who frequently prioritize making

the most use of available space rather than optimizing its functions with efficient resource use; c)

Builders who use global construction techniques and building materials rather than determining

the availability of the local resources and using indigenous materials and techniques; d) The failure

of managers to respond to the current need for environmentally-sensitive facilities, services, and

activities; the use of coastal resorts by visitors or the local community; e) users of coastal resorts

from visitors or the local community who lack basic knowledge on difficult environmental issues;

and f) local, regional, and national governments.

This is especially true in some developed sites in Egypt where poor planning, inadequate

building design, and shoddy development have resulted in serious environmental, social, and

economic problems. While the concept of sustainability has been adopted worldwide as an

approach for development, the application of sustainability practices to the design and planning of

overall coastal development and beach resorts has not occurred in a significant way. To truly

incorporate long-term environmental considerations into their proactive design and planning
processes, all stakeholders must understand the difficulties, restrictions, and opportunities

associated with sustainable design. Only then can meaningful progress be achieved.

A. PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The proposed beach resort hotel complex is a proposed structure that will be constructed in

Subic Matnog Sorsogon, Philippines, on the island of Calintaan. The buildings' façade features a

beach vibe design made up of these sea animals and a sea wave. The building's interior was

influenced by Sorsogon cultural and historical ornaments and other items. The windows in the

apartments provide a tranquil view of the beach.

Every design that can be seen on the website has a distinct significance or stands for something.

This is why a trip to the resort is worthwhile.

B. DESIGN CONCEPT

As what the philosophy suggests, the proponents will adhere to the simplicity of the Proposed

Beach Resort Complex that will imply the Green Building goals and requirements. Because of its

simple and natural appearance, it is expected to catch the attention of everyone who visits the

Beach Resort. Four colors will be the sole focus of the design. Green colors can be observed from

artificial plantations, gray colors are present in concrete, tinted light blue colors are present in

windows, and brown colors are present in the many types of wood that will be employed. The

Green Building is part of the proposed Beach Resort Complex's design concept, which intends to

give visitors a relaxing experience.

The proposed design for the Beach Resort combine’s modern, cultural, heritage, green

architecture. It was inspired by the Shell of Sea Urchin. The spherical, hard shells of sea urchins

are round and spiny. Adult sea urchins have fivefold symmetry, but their pluteus larvae feature

bilateral (mirror) symmetry, indicating that the sea urchin belongs to the Bilateria group of animal

phyla, which also comprises the chordates and the arthropods, the annelids and the molluscs, and

are found in every ocean and in every climate, from the tropics to the polar regions, and inhabit

marine benthic (sea bed) habitats, from rocky shores to hadal zone depths.

Tropical architecture has gained popularity as a popular architectural choice for resort

developments, museums, and other recreational facilities due to its reputation for blending in with
the environment. Although many people could mistakenly think that this style of design is

attractive, Tropical Architecture is truly characterized by the ideas that are employed. This

architecture incorporates planning and design solutions into the creation to keep the interior cool

despite the hot and humid weather.

A holistic approach to designing for tropical climates includes taking into account the overall

site context. The site's size, shape, form, neighborhood, accessibility, geography, restrictions,

locations, microclimate, and overall aesthetic impact are all taken into account. This style is a

favorite for resort expansions and other sporting recreation conveniences since it blends in with

the surroundings and the building's orientation takes into account the sun's path and the wind's

direction to prevent internal heat buildup. Despite the fact that many people may consider the

arrangement to be lavish, the standards followed are what distinguish tropical architecture. This

engineering incorporates consolidating, arranging, and a plan of arrangements into the

improvement to maintain a cool interior temperature despite the humid and blistering outside

conditions.

For a comprehensive strategy, standards for tropical climate planning coordinate the entire

site's environment. It adjusts to the size, shape, neighborhood, accessibility, topography, barriers,

regions, microclimate, and general visual appeal of the location. The structure's direction is taken

into account together with the sun and wind directions to lessen interior heat buildup and account

for remote cooling. It also considers the availability of materials in the local and provincial areas.

Southeast Asian nations have primarily kept tropical architecture from our ancestors' time

despite the heat and humidity. Even though things have been tranquil for a while, its rules, which

focus on economic growth, can still be applied, especially in light of the challenging issue of global

warming. It also takes into account what organic materials will be used that can serve as local and

regional sources.

Since the time of our ancestors, tropical architecture has been widely used in Southeast Asian

countries with tropical climates. Even though it was developed decades ago, its tenets of

sustainable development remain true today, particularly in light of the escalating effects of global

warming.
C. DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

“Simplicity — A Thoughtful Approach To Better Design”

- Ivy Eisenberg

While sometimes thought of as a particular style, simplicity is more a philosophy about how to

design something. It’s having deep understanding of what you’re designing and then creating a

unified experience based on that understanding. Our goal is simple objects, objects that you can’t

imagine any other way. Simplicity is not the absence of clutter. Get it right, and you become closer

and more focused on the object.

D. FORM CONCEPT

It is crucial to have a form that will make visitors happy and enable them to enjoy their

stay. This research will demonstrate how the resort is set up with everyone's comfort and

convenience in mind. The form concept demonstrates how the buildings are placed in relation to

their intended use and how they are interconnected with the buildings around. who will be visiting

the resort and how they will move about.

E. STYLE GUIDING PRINCIPLE

The style guiding principles that is present in this study are as follows:

 Natural environment factors

 Building technology materials

 Cultural patterns and heritage

 Active and passive cooling

 Future sustainability

F. FUNCTIONAL CONCEPT

The significance of their functions will determine how the buildings and structures should be

arranged. The main goals of the proposed beach resort complex were to astound the public with

the placement of the buildings. The proposed resort's hotel will serve as both the primary structure
and the location of the lobby. Other recreational structures will be located away from the cottages

and villas since they could disturb guests who are trying to unwind. According to their spatial

adjacencies, smaller buildings will be positioned elsewhere.

The circulation and flow of the structures in the area are more systematically designed when

the layout is radial. Additionally, it draws attention to the central structure that is responsible for

connecting the buildings together. Avoiding space waste by integrating the spaces into their

various characteristics and providing the necessary structure. Additionally, by doing this, open

places are preserved for the future.

G. ECONOMY CONCEPT

Economically, the suggested project will be sustainable because of the incorporation of

green building; additionally, the establishment's overall energy consumption will be reduced by

adding sustainable elements like solar panels. In order to have water availability and to save water

as well, major and little structures like hotels and nearby cottages would include water tanks, deep

wells, and rainwater collection systems.

H. ENVIRONMENTAL CONCEPT

The proposed Beach Resort Complex on Calintaan Island will emphasize environmentally

friendly building techniques. Because the architecture will be minimal and concentrate on the

surrounding environment, many trees will be planted there in order to give natural air or ventilation

when it is developed. The building's design aims to make visitors feel at ease every time they view

it. By remaining true to nature, it is crucial to highlight the island's tremendous biodiversity.

I. TIME CONCEPT

A combination of woods, concrete, and glass will be employed as structural and

architectural components. This will produce a look that is more genuine and natural. Metal will

also be utilized to make the building more stable, albeit this cannot be seen from the outside

because, as we all know, metals may rust when exposed to sea breeze for an extended period of

time. The use of concrete, wood, and glass will preserve simplicity. The materials specified will

have a long lifespan.
