Assignment # 9: Friction

1. The ladder has a uniform weight of 80 lb and rests against the wall at B. The coefficient of
friction at A and B is µ = 0.40. Determine the normal reaction at B if the ladder is on the verge of
moving and the smallest angle at which the ladder will not slip. Ans.

2. A horizontal bar, 12 ft long and of negligible weight, rests on rough inclined planes as shown.
The angle of friction is 150. Determine the distance “x” before motion impends.
3. The beam AD is loaded as shown. The coefficients of static friction at the wedge’s top and
bottom surfaces are µCA = 0.25 and µCB = 0.35, respectively. Neglect the weight and size of the
wedge and the thickness of the beam. Determine the horizontal force P which must be applied
to the wedge in order to remove it from under the beam. Ans. P = 5.53 kN

4. A “hawser” is wrapped around a fixed “capstan” to secure a ship from docking. The tension in
the rope caused by the ship is 1500 lb and the greatest horizontal force that a longshoreman can
exert on the rope is 50 lb. The coefficient of static friction is µs= 0.30. Determine the least number
of complete turns the rope must be wrapped around the capstan in order to prevent slipping of
the rope. Ans. n = 2 turns

5. The simple band brake is constructed so that the ends of the friction strap are connected to
the pin at A and the lever arm at B. The coefficient of static friction between the strap and the
wheel is µs= 0.50. The wheel is subjected to a torque of 80 lb-ft. Determine the smallest force P
applied to the lever that is required to hold the wheel stationary. Ans. P = 17.1 lb
