1. The coefficients of static and kinetic friction between the 100-kg block and the
inclined plane are 0.30 and 0.20, respectively. Determine (a) the friction force F
with a magnitude of 200 N to the block at rest, (b) the force P required to initiate
motion up the incline from rest, and (c) the friction force F acting on the block if
P = 600 N.

2. If the coefficient of static friction at A is 0.4 and the collar at B is smooth so it only
exerts a horizontal force on the pipe, determine the minimum distance so that
the bracket can support the cylinder of any mass without slipping. Neglect the
mass of the bracket.

3. Two blocks A and B have a weight of 10 lb and 6 lb, respectively. They are resting
on the incline for which the coefficients of static friction are ɥA = 0.15 and ɥB =
0.25. Determine the incline angle for which both blocks begin to slide. Also find
the required stretch or compression in the connecting spring for this to occur.
The spring has a stiffness of K = 2lb/ft.

4. Determine the smallest lever force P needed to prevent the wheel from rotating
if it is subjected to a torque of M =250 N.m. The coefficient of static friction
between the belt and the wheel is 0.3. The wheel is pin connected at its center,
B.

5. The simple band brake is constructed so that the ends of the friction strap are
connected to the pin at A and the lever arm at B. If the wheel is subjected to a
torque of M = 80 lb.ft determine the smallest force P applied to the lever that is
required to hold the wheel stationary. The coefficient of static friction between
the strap and wheel is ɥs = 0.5.

6. Block A has a weight of 100 lb and rests on a surface for which ɥs =0.25. If the
coefficient of static friction between the cord and the fixed peg at C is ɥs =0.3. The
weight of the suspended cylinder B WB = 40 lb, show if the block A will slip, tip,
or neither.
