BGas Painting Inspection Grade 2/3

Training Assessment Day 4

1) How many times can Garnet be recycled and re-used?

Up to 3 times and @ sites only once

2) Describe the calibration and use of a Surface Profile Needle Gauge?

Gauge must be calibrated to zero on a flat, smooth glass plate and the bezel
locked in place. This can be used in flat surfaces and cannot be used on
curved surfaces, such as pipes.

3) What is the definition of the Barrier Principle?

Stops electrolytes from contacting substrate.

4) List the safety equipment required for an abrasive blasting operation on site?
PPE, Carbon impregnated hoses, Reinforced hoses, Pressurized pot, Vapor
trap, Compressor @ 100 psi, Dead men handle w/ direct contact to the
operator, air feed hood, scaffolding w/ tag, nozzle, ear protection, barricades,
warning sign, qualified personnel, Blast pot must be earthed, boots, apron,
gloves, hose w/ external bayonet type coupling w/ whiplash restraints

5) Describe the use of Banana Gauge on Aluminium and galvanized substrate?

It is not possible to use Banana gauge on aluminium because it is non-
magnetic substrate. In galvanized substrate you can measure only 100 µm

6) What information needs to be recorded on a sites painting report?

RH, Dew point, Metal temp., Surface profile, WFT, DFT, VS%,Wet & Dry
bulb temp, Name of operator, Name of manufacturer of paint, Plant#,
Compressor #, coating time, location, Climatic condition, Specification,
Report #, Date, Name of Job, Contractor, No. of manpower.

7) Disadvantages and advantages of Airless spray and conventional spray

systems?
Airless Spray: Conventional spray system
Advantages Advantages
a) High rate of paint flow a) Good atomization
b) Can apply high viscosity fluids b) Inexpensive nozzles
c) Versatile (No air hose) c) More Accuracy
d) High transfer efficiency d) Less cleaning after use
e) Lower waste e) Better finished achieved
f) Large area coverage f) Lower working pressure
Disadvantages g) Concentrated spray pattern
a) Poor atomization Disadvantages
b) Expensive nozzles a) Operator fatigue
c) Reduce fan pattern b) Specialized container
d) Coating limitations c) Slow application rates
e) Increased maintenance
f) High skill required
g) Increased safety risk
h) Lower quality finish
8) What product should be used for pipe coatings in damp conditions?
Moisture curing polyurethane Ex. Liegn resistex

9) Describe the use of Drager bellows, and what colour crystal change would
you expect, if carrying out a test for xylene?
The glass tube consisting chemical crystal. The ends are broken to allow air
passes into the crystal.Colour change from white to reddish brown

10) What is the name of the mill used to produce mastics, fillers, and putties?
Triple roll mill

11) What safety factors should be observed when using solvents?

COSHH Documentation, Flash consideration, eye & hand protection,
ventilation and compatibility.

12) What action should taken if it is noted that a contractor has applied a coat of
paint out of sequence?
Stop & Report to the Engineer. Recommended a Re-blast and re-paint
incorrect sequence.

13) Name 6 opaque pigments and their colours?

a) Carbon – Black
b) Cobalt – Blue
c) Chromium – Green, Yellow & Oranges
d) Iron – Brown, red and Yellow
e) Calcium – Red & Yellow
f) Titanium Dioxide – White

14) Name a Non destructive DFT measuring equipment?

a) Banana gauge
b) Electronic gauge
c) Tinsley pencil gauge or foreman’s gauge
d) Magnetic horseshoe gauge
