6.1 Work preparation

A. Sand Bed under Floor Tiles, thickness should be

maintained as necessary to obtain finish floor
levels indicated on Approved Shop Drawings and
Ceramic, Porcelain or Natural Stone Tile Designs.
B. Manual spreading and compaction to obtain
uniform depth and distribution. Remove stones
and foreign materials.
C. Reinforce with chicken or mesh wire for
separation between dissimilar background or
surface must be applied:
If needed: Metal lathe 200 mm width & corner
bead as specified and required.
D. Background to receive wall tiles on vertical
surfaces to finished with wall tiles are to be
coated with dash coat to be wet cured for a
minimum of 2 days prior to setting of tiles.
E. Lightly Rinse with water prior to setting tiles.

6.2 Application

6.2.1. Floors Installation.

A. Obtain center lines or starting point for both axis

as per approved shop drawing.
B. Floor tiles are to be set using thick wet mortar
bedding on uniformly distributed sand beds.
Mortar mix shall be 1:3 (1 part Portland cement
and 3 part sand) Thickness of bedding shall be
between (20-25mm). Each tile is to be beaten to
ensure bedding of tiles.
C. Start installing tiles in 1 direction alongside of the centerline.
D. Install tile on floor with 3mm tile spacer or as noted. In wet areas provide slope to
drains as per approved shop drawing.
E. Install threshold as per approved shop drawing at location indicated.

6.2.2 Walls Installation.

A. Obtain center lines or starting point for both

axis as per approved shop drawing.
B. Wall tiles are to set with thick wet mortar
bedding on walls prepared. Mortar mix 1:4
(1part Portland cement and 4 part sand)
Thickness of beddings shall range between (15-
20mm). Tiles are to be beaten and set firmly in
place to ensure full contact between tile back
and bedding in full area of tile.
C. Install tile on wall with 3mm tile spacer or as noted .
D. In wet area; install ready skirting with continuous joint on the applied floor.
E. Comply prior to installing skirting with the preparation.
F. Maintain surfaces to receive skirting to have zero joint between surface of plaster and
backside of skirting.

6.2.3 Grouting

A. Clean joint by brush to ensure that thickness

B. Add 5 kg of cement grout to 1.8 liter of water
and mix until thick creamy paste is produced;
allow to stand for 10 minutes.
C. Apply cement grout to the joint spaces
between tiles using a sponge or soft cloth.Work
the mixture into the joints grouting the
ceramics tile thickness and around the edges.
D. Remove surplus from the face of the tiles with dry cloth and run the tip as a gloves
finger or a rounded piece of wood along the grouting.
E. When the grout is dry, clean the tiles with a damp sponge.

6.2.4 Cleaning and Protecting

A. On completion of placement and grouting,

clean all ceramic tile surfaces. Remove cement
grout residue from tile as soon as possible and
Grout sealer if required.
B. Leave finished installation clean and free of
cracked, chipped, broken, hollowed sounds and
otherwise defective tile work.
C. Prohibit foot and wheel traffic from tiles floors
at least 7 days after grouting is completed.
D. Provide fixed protection or other heavy covering (cartons or jute sack) during
construction period to prevent staining, damage and wear.

7. REPAIRS:
Find a replacement tile that matches. Flooring contractors often leave spare tiles in
the garage or storage room for when the homeowner might need to repair tile
mishap.
Choose a matching grout. Borrow colored grout samples from a well-stocked
flooring supply store and bring it home to find the closest match.

Remove the old tile completely. Be careful not to damage any of the surrounding
tiles.
►Use an electric drill with a masonry bit to drill a diagonal series of small holes into
the cracked tile, keeping drilled holes less than 1 inch (2.54 cm) apart.
►Split the tile through the horizontal hole-line by using a ball-peen hammer to tap a
cold chisel into the tile. Tap very lightly so as not to crack neighboring grout joints.
►Remove the loosened pieces. Use a flat bar to pry up any shards that you cannot
get up by hand.
►Scrape the remaining old mortar from the subfloor using a stiff-bladed scraper. It
is not important that you get every last bit up. Just make sure the area is fairly clean
of mortar.
►Vacuum up any loose dirt or debris
Set the replacement tile. Mix the thin-set mortar to a pancake batter consistency.
Let sit for 5 minutes, stir again, and begin spreading. Use a notched trowel to spread
mortar onto the subfloor and lay the new tile in. Use a level to ensure tile is laying
perfectly flat and also to determine that the newly set tile is flush with surrounding
tiles.
Grout the area according to the grout manufacturer's directions. Generally, it is
done the following way:
►Mix your grout in a clean container with fresh water. Slowly add a little bit of
water, mix and then repeat until you reach a consistency of pancake batter.
►Using a grout float, scoop out a bit of grout. Place the float at a 45-degree angle
and in diagonal strokes spread the grout in the gaps between the tiles.
►After 20-30 minutes your grout should start to harden, and you can clean the
surface of tiles with a wet sponge. You may need to do 2-3 rounds of cleaning.

8. SAFETY:

All works shall comply with safety procedure or instruction as set out in project
safety plan and municipality rules and regulations. All safety recommendations as
advised by the approved sub-contractor.
Basic PPE to be worn by all staff or laborers.
Provide lighting when working at night.
