BIODIVERSITY
S CI E NCE 9
What is an
BIODIVERSITY?

is the variety
of life in a
given area
Forest Farm
What is
POPULATION?
group of living
things within a
certain area that
are all the same
species
it is important to know
the amount of
biodiversity and species
distribution in a
community to know if it
can withstand to abrupt
changes in the
environment
IF a COMMUNITY is
all the same
species, it is more
at risk if there are
changes in
environment
What iS
BIODIVERSITY INDEX?

use to describe
the number of
species that are
present in a given
habitat.
INDEX OF number of species in the area
DIVERSITY = number of individual in the area
EXAMPLE

a 100 square meter area has 100 cabbage plant.

a 100 square meter area with 1 cabbage, 1 carrot, 1

potato and 1 onion
THe closer the
diversity index to
1, the more healthy
and diverse it is
Community with high
index of diversity will
enable to survive
environmental changes
better than a low index
of diversity
DIVERSITY INDEX
No. of No. OF TOTAL DIVERSITY
ECOSYSTEM
SPECIES INDIVIDUAL ORGANISM INDEX

EX. DESERT 10 3 30 10/30= 0.33

FOREST 15 10 150 0.1

30 species
2. AGRICULTURAL
FIELD
3 15 another species 50 0.06
5 another species

1 giraffe
1 elephant
3. grassland 5 1 tiger 5 1
1 cheetah
1 lion
1. What do you call the variety of living things in
an area? BIODIVERSITY
2. Which ecosystem has high diversity index?
GRASSLAND
3. Which ecosystem has low diversity
index?AGRICULTURAL FIELD
4. Which ecosystem do you think can adapt
easily to changes in environment? GRASSLAND
What iS
POPULATION DENSITY?

number of
individual per unit
area
POPULATION number of individual
DENSITY = size of area
EXAMPLE

a population of 100 small fishes that live in a pond

with an area of 100 square meter

a population of 100 small fishes that live in an area

of only 1 square meter
Name of population No. of individuals population density

goose 10 0.33

chicken 60 2

duck 15 0.5
What iS
CARRYING CAPACITY?

maximum
population size an
environment can
support
IDEAL CONDITION OF
THE COMMUNITY

CARRYING POPULATION
CAPACITY DENSITY
What iS
LIMITING FACTORS?

environmental
condition that limit
the size of a
population
What iS
LIMITING FACTORS?

help balance an
ecosystem by
preventing the
population from
increasing
LIMITING FaCTORS

Availability of food and water Severe climate and weather change

LIMITING FaCTORS

Light Soil
LIMITING FaCTORS

Nutrients Commercial development

LIMITING FaCTORS

Disease Living Condition

The greater the
population density,
the greater the
effect of limiting
factors on a
population
Name of population No. of individuals population density

goose 10 0.33

chicken 60 2

duck 15 0.5
1. What do you call a group of the same species
living within a certain area? POPULATION
2. The population with greater density is? CHICKEN
3. The population with lesser density is? GOOSE
4. Which population has the greater effect to limiting
factors? CHICKEN
5. Which one should be greater when it comes to
species survival? Population density or carrying
capacity? CARRYING CAPACITY
there are species on
earth that can survive
in the environment and
abundant on earth,
they do not have to
worry about
decreasing population
HOWEVER THERE
ARE SPECIES WHO
CANNOT SURVIVE
EASILY IN AN
ENVIRONMENT
BECAUSE HUMAN
USES PLANTS AND
ANIMALS FOR
THEIR EVERYDAY
LIVING
What iS
THREATENED SPECIES?

when particular
species is
susceptible of
declining so fast
that it becomes
endangered
LIST OF PHILIPPINE
THREATENED FAUNA

/WC2020/STAT_AND_LISTS_OF_WILDLIFE/FA
UNA/DAO-2019-09.PDF
What iS
ENDANGERED SPECIES?

once the number

of species
becomes so low
that only few
remain
ENDANGEREd
species, if not
protected, could
eventually
become extinct
What iS
EXTINCTION OF SPECIES?

vanishing of a
species when the
last if its members
die
REMEMBER
Threatened species are animals and plants whose
numbers are very low or reducing rapidly.
Endangered Species are those animals and plants that
are so rare and they are at risk of becoming extinct.

THREATENED SPECIES are not ENDANGERED yet,

but are possible to become endangered in the future.
