Background
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are grounded in a vision that aims to transform our world.
This vision is of great significance to the over 370 million indigenous people worldwide, who have
historically suffered grave injustices and many of whom continue to face marginalization, exploitation
and exclusion. Amongst other threats with the rapid urbanisation, increasing pressures placed on
natural resources, focus on environmental conservation etc., these native communities have been
losing access to the traditional lands and territories which further exacerbates their already insecure
livelihoods, in the agricultural sector. Even though great strides have been made in the eradication of
poverty, indigenous peoples are still among the poorest of the poor. Under the pressure of the
increasing insecurity of their livelihoods, coupled with other factors like limited opportunities in the
formal economy, many have migrated away from their traditional areas to border towns to seek a
living in the informal economy.
Aim
HUDCO NASA DESIGN Trophy 2023 aims at building momentum towards a ‘developmentalist’
paradigm where tribal communities would no longer suffer from a lack of housing, and have housing
which promotes cultural customs for holistic wellbeing, and also, draws on traditional building
techniques and designs. The theme is aimed at bringing focus on challenges faced by ‘Native
Communities of Tripura’, their issue of inequality, and, at finding solutions to their housing problem.
Objectives
The overarching objective of HUDCO NASA DESIGN Trophy 2023 is to develop, for the indigenous
people of Tripura, prototypical design ideas for the housing and the residential environment at three
different levels: 1- the dwelling unit level, 2- at the level of the immediate community formed by the
clustering dwellings within a neighbourhood and the indoor/outdoor spaces they share, and 3- at the
level of the site plan. The specific project objectives, call for:
• Using the concepts of affordable, sustainable, and environmentally friendly housing
incorporating indigenous know how in the design and construction of the houses.
• Utilize green building techniques for energy saving benefits. With all the construction
technologies available today it is important to choose the right techniques for the tribe.
• Provide shared interaction space within site plan.
• Use modular construction to help keep the construction costs at a minimum as well as increase
the flexibility and personalization of individual houses, and
• Quick to construct.
• Design Parameters:
A total of 700 DUs is to be provided having a mix of 500 HIG DUs of carpet area 150 SqM, 150 MIG
