The Mopar race events are heavily courting guys like Dan Van Horn from the modern Hemi Shootout

told racer Rob Wood is coming to St. Louis to the Hellcat and Demon Nationals, all the way from
Arizona, to defend his win at the MATS show in Las Vegas, earlier this year.

metallic car with a factory maroon bench
seat interior, and virtually no options for
being a Chrysler 300. It was built with the
basic AM radio, hand-cranked windows,
the 350 horsepower version of the 440

375 horsepower motor with dual exhaust.
It never had air conditioning, but since
these came standard with power steering
and power brakes, it does have that, and
it’s got three-speed windshield wipers, pre-

Oregon, and dual rearview mirrors. It

his yard that he’d had for a very long time
and was interested in getting rid of.
Obviously, that calls for an exchange of
phone numbers, and within a few days, Mark
pulled up to the man’s house in Richmond,
California and was led around to the back-
yard, where a faded, chalky-white Road
Runner was sitting underneath a tarp that
had dry-rotted and was coming apart all over
the place. The B-body had obviously been
off the road for a really long time and need-
ed a complete restoration, due to years of
outdoor exposure, but the more Mark looked
at it, the more intrigued he became – it was
a white car with a white bench seat interior
(shattered, but nonetheless there), it had a
cracked, dark green, vinyl roof on it, a dark
green dash and steering wheel, black rugs,
and more importantly, it was a matching

his month’s pics from the past
feature includes several shots
from the family photo album of
reader Darren Wilson out in
California. One shows his dad
(Jon) with his ’67 GTX in 1972,
when the car was sporting a 361 engine
instead of its original 440. He eventually
bored the motor to make it a
383, and it ran 15.10s in the
quarter – this was the car
that started an entire Mopar
family. The white 1964
Chrysler 300K was owned
by Jon Wilson from 1976 to
1981, when these things
were nothing more than
weird old cars. It still had
the long cross-ram intake
on the 413, and Jon used
it to tow an 8x30’ trailer!
His wife had a ’66
Charger during that time,
powered by yet another
361 big block.
Finally, we
have a seriously cool
photo showing an inter-
esting duo. Jon’s friend,
Larry Blasier, owned a
1968 GTX, and togeth-
er they built another
1968 GTX drag car,
which they ran out at
Orange County
Raceway during the
late seventies. This
photo shows Larry’s
street GTX towing
Jon and Larry’s drag
GTX off to the track in
1976. The drag car also had a
413 in it, which had been pirated from a
1963 Chrysler 300. Darren tells us it was
bored, had an 11:1 compression ratio, a
3.54 Dana, and it ran a best of 13.54 at
110 mph. Not bad for a couple of working
class guys on a tight budget! And, most
importantly, all that put Darren on the
path to being a Mopar devotee!
Thanks to Darren for sharing the
family photos, it certainly looks like he
had a very interesting childhood! X

decades, he’s amassed the largest col-

produced enough of this stuff as it was
up to the dealerships to buy or order it
– thus, how much bling you wanted in
your new car showroom was directly
dependent upon how much cash you
wanted to spend. Secondly, these
pieces were almost always specific to
one particular model for one particular
year, so when that year was over,
99.5% of the dealers who had this stuff
pitched it out in the trash, because they
knew they’d never need it again. All of
which makes collecting dealership pro-

whole Mopar hobby.
At the MCACN event last
November, we were treated to some-
thing Steven’s had for a while that we’d
never seen before; a huge 1971 Dodge
color and upholstery chart. For those of
us who have a hard time looking at little
color chips in the back of a sales
brochure, Dodge offered these very
large 62” long, 42” high color and
upholstery boards, which showed every
color you could get on each specific
model, and furthermore, what color
interiors and types of upholstery you
could get as well! While the big chart
broke everything down by the different
models, showing you precisely what
you could and couldn’t get with any par-
ticular car, from vinyl roofs to upholstery
inserts to the different grade interior
options. This sign originally came from
a dealership in Illinois and Steven
acquired it through a fellow collector a
few months back, with the MCACN
show being this one’s first showing to
the general public. But wait, there’s

Devin was one of many small
firms in this time period building kit cars

Lancaster, California, and the kit could be
bought in pieces or as a whole ($995.00,

be assembled without welding, using only
a hand drill and screwdriver, according to
the sales literature; it took some 1940
Ford components to complete the steer-

on your own, perhaps a little safer chas-

could fit under the flip-style front end. Small openings
allowed air into the injectors, and homemade headers came
straight off the engine, bent downward, then curved again to
exit from the sides of the car just ahead of the door frame as
four single pipes. The accompanying TorqueFlite bought
with the engine went in behind this, with a late 1950’s GM
banjo-style differential holding 4.56 gearing out back. The
suspension used coil-over shocks and a lightened-and-

built before World War II. The car was painted in a mustard-

the project had begun, and then it became
a treasured part of the collection maintained

shop where the car was built is still there,
and Jay Wilbeck now owns a successful

T/A we saw at Mopars in the
Park, owned by Brian Antony,
was quite the topic of conversa-
tion. The bright green Challenger
still sports its original paint and a
lot of its original components, but, Brian
went with a modern battery for the car. As
a poke at OE correctness, he found a way
to have those all-important yellow-colored
caps atop the battery by taking some plas-
tic Moutain Dew bottle caps and gluing
them onto his battery! This simple tongue-
in-cheek trick went unoticed by many who
passed the car over the weekend. What
started out as a joke has turned into quite
the conversation starter. Sometimes, you
just got to think outside the box, and it
never hurts to have a hot glue gun handy
somewhere in the garage! X
