MANAGEMENT SKILLS REQUIRED AT VARIOUS LEVEL

THE FIELD OF ENGINEERING MANAGEMENT

Every work that is completed has a certain technical component. There are technical aspects to
practically everything we do, whether it be at work, at home, in traveling, and so on. Engineers are
expected to do a range of tasks in the engineering industry based on their job duties and area of
specialization. For engineers to carry out their duties professionally and effectively, they must know what
is expected of them. Most engineers participate in some form of a project team, and management plays a
significant part in every teamwork. For this reason, management plays a significant role in engineering.

Total quality management serves as the foundation idea of prominent businesses throughout. It is
the most modern idea of improving and developing in all aspects of one's life and career. Connecting
engineering to management is extremely important because engineering is more about technical
approaches and components. The skills that engineers need but they lack will be their next concern.
Engineers are expected to typically lack people-based abilities as they are not trained to deal directly with
people. Once they are given management roles, the difficulty will become more prominent. Connecting
engineering to management is extremely important because engineering is more about technical
approaches and components.

Exposure to engineering management operations is required if the engineer manager would want
to perform his/her duties effectively. In addition, gaining on-the-job experience or some experience as an
associate with businesses can be greatly useful. Every learner or trainee in the early phases of engineering
management needs practical business experience. The management of the engineers within an
organization or department is under the responsibility of every engineer manager. The company's new
hires and starters are trained and coached by them. For the technical experts that the organization has
hired, they serve as mentors and motivators.

THE FUNCTIONS OF THE ENGINEER

Humanity has benefited from the different tools, projects, and equipment that engineers have created
since prehistoric times. Some examples include:

1. Irrigation System - 6000 to 3000 B.C.

2. Pyramids of Egypt - 3000 to 600 B.C.
3. Road Building by the Romans - 600 B.C. to A.D. 400
4. Production of paper and gunpowder by the Chinese - 100 A.D. to 1600 A.D.
5. Production of steam engine and spinning and weaving machinery - 1601 A.D. to 1799 A.D.
6. Manufacture of cars and household appliances - Modern times

It would take countless books to compile a list of all the practical things engineers have created and
completed. These contributions show that engineers have developed into a vital sector of the global
workforce. This anticipation will last for a very long time.

Even though engineers are currently developing solutions to many of the problems that mankind is
currently facing, there is still a lot that is expected of them. Their outputs, new or improvements of old
ones, are very much needed in the following specific problem concerns:

1. The production of more food for a fast-growing world population;

-We created many things in order to sustain our fast-growing population, such as boosting crops
to increase crop production and the amount of land used to feed a hungry world, and we also began to
look to the sea for more food and created fish farms in order to produce more food without harming the
sea.

2. The elimination of air and water pollution;

         - As the earth develops and discovers new technologies or machines that make our daily lives
easier it also gives us a problem because some of them produce air or water pollution, thus engineers have
a major opportunity and responsibility to develop product designs and manufacturing that minimize waste
and increase recycling and reuse globally. This will protect resources for future generations, reduce waste,
and lessen pollution.

3. Solid waste disposal and materials recycling.

4. The reduction of noise in various forms;

         - Simply by removing or switching it out for a quieter source of the noise, making engineering
modifications, implementing administrative controls, and using protective equipment, the exposure to
noise can be decreased. The best way to lessen noise exposure is to incorporate it into the design from the
beginning.

5. Supplying the increasing demand for energy;

         - To supply the increasing demand for energy engineers created many forms or various ways to
produce energy such as dams or water mills where water is the source of energy, windmills where wind is
the source of its energy, etc.

6. Supplying the increasing demand for mobility;

         - To supply the increased demand for mobility vehicles were made and different forms at that,
land, air, and water. Many are made for convenience and some are made for professional uses.

7. Preventing and solving crimes; and

8. Meeting the increasing demand for communication facilities.

Specifically, the functions of engineering encompass the following areas:

1. Research - where the engineer is engaged in the process of learning about nature and codifying this
knowledge into usable theories. A research engineer is an example of this, as they conduct research in an
engineering field or specialization. They are responsible for gathering relevant information, data, or
samples, which are then analyzed to find the optimal solution to the study.

2. Design and development - where the engineer undertakes the activity of turning a product concept to a
finished physical item. Design for manufacturability and value engineering teams (a feature of some
companies) are charged with improvement of designs and specifications at the research, development,
design, and production stages of product development. If in research, concepts or theories are formed, and
the product to be created is evaluated or analyzed.  In the design and development, it is where the
development process begins or where technologies, products, or tools are implemented.

3. Testing - where the engineer works in a unit where new products or parts are tested for workability.
Testing is actually part of the job of engineers since they are the ones who develop and design the product
in terms of electrical and hardware components, making it easier to adjust or improve the design of the
product if there is a problem.

4. Manufacturing - where the engineer is directly in charge of production personnel or assumes

responsibility for the product. Manufacturing engineers, for example, are responsible for ensuring that the
production line is safe, effective, and efficient.

5. Construction - this is where the construction engineer (a civil engineer) is either directly in charge of
the construction personnel or may have responsibility for the quality of the construction process. Civil
engineers are an example since they are in charge of the construction of buildings, houses, roads, bridges,
and other structures.

6. Sales - where the engineer assists the company's customers to meet their needs, especially those that
require technical expertise. These are the sales engineers because they are the most knowledgeable about
advanced scientific and technological products. They are the company's public speakers, and they use
their knowledge to explain the benefits of a product or service to potential customers.

7. Consulting - where the engineer works as consultant of any individual or organization requiring his
services. An example of this are those who have worked in a particular or specific field for a long time.
That even after they retire, someone will inquire about their ideas or plans to serve as consultants because
they have gained valuable experience in their profession.

8. Government - where the engineer may find employment in the government performing any of the
various tasks in regulating, monitoring, and controlling the activities of various institutions, public or
private. These are any engineers who work in the government, such as civil, mechanical, or electrical
engineers. Examples of what they do include providing the plan,  managing maintenance and construction
projects such as roads, bridges, or dams, depending on the specialization they chose.

9. Teaching - where the engineer gets employment in a school and is assigned as a teacher of engineering
courses. Some of them later become deans, vice presidents, and presidents. These are professors or

teachers who are also engineers and may have experience, for example, at colleges and universities such
as NEUST that offer engineering courses.

10. Management - where the engineer is assigned to manage groups of people performing specific tasks.
They are the engineers who are referred to as managers, and they can be found in any institution,
company, or even government. They are engineers who have the ability or skills for management.

THE ENGINEER IN VARIOUS TYPE OF ORGANIZATION

From the engineer's perspective, organizations can be categorized according to the level of engineering
tasks performed:

Level one - One, businesses like retailing establishments that have only a few engineers on staff.

Level two - individuals who have an associate's degree in engineering and work in industries such as
transportation.

Level three - individuals with advanced degrees in engineering who work in construction companies.

MANAGEMENT SKILL REQUIRED AT VARIOUS LEVEL:

Engineers rarely become level one general managers or chief executives unless they own the company.
The engineer manager may lead a small engineering unit, but few firms have them

Engineers may lead level two engineering divisions. Engineer managers now need management skills.

An engineer at a level three company has the best chance of becoming the president or general manager.
In this situation, the engineer manager can't do their job well if they don't have good management skills.

Engineering management is a specialized form of management required to successfully lead

engineering or technical personnel and projects and applies to either functional management or
project management. Engineering managers use their training and experience to coach, mentor and
motivate technical professionals.

An engineering manager’s duties might include:

 Overseeing the team members and processes associated with engineering and construction
projects
 Providing management and leadership to a team of analysts or industrial engineers
 Helping a company or organization identify costs and budget needs for specific projects in
their planning stage
 Delegating tasks and inspecting processes and project results for accuracy and quality

Engineering management and leadership is a “broadly integrative and synthesis-focused enterprise

engineering discipline”1, where, akin to mechanical engineering and civil engineering, design and
synthesis are key elements of the engineering work. Engineering management covers the gap
between engineering and business management, namely the combination of technical and economic
decision-making with analytical skills, optimization capabilities, and technical product development.

When industrial revolutions emerge, engineering innovation is essentially causing the production of
goods and services in a society to be accelerated due to a general-purpose ‘power’. For example, the
first revolution was powered by steam; the second one by electricity; and the third one by computing.
This new and fourth industrial revolution, as many believe, is being powered by data and AI.
Companies who are restructuring or building themselves to thrive in it form what we call, Industry
4.0.

At its fundamental core, the field of engineering management combines technical engineering
expertise, human leadership, specific business management concepts, and advanced technologies.
Today’s engineering managers must be skilled Industry 4.0 practitioners and leaders who can guide
diverse engineering teams and oversee complex service or product development that always leverage
and consider the role of data. Their responsibilities include safety, sustainability, resource allocation,
team building, project planning, budgeting, and product development linked with economic and
financial outcomes. They must also oversee execution in terms of technology deployment.

Management is a process of various functions like planning, organizing, leading, adn controlling the
business operations in such a manner as to achieve the objectives set by the business firm. It consists of
all activities beginning from business planning to its actual survival.

Management is a universal phenomenon. It is a very popular and widely used term. All organizations -
business, political, cultural or social are involved in management because it is the management which
helps and directs the various efforts towards a definite purpose.

Management is a purposive activity. It is something that directs group efforts towards the attainment of
certain predetermined goals.

Management involves creating an internal environment: - It is the management which puts into use
the various factors of production. Therefore, it is the responsibility of management to create such
conditions which are conducive to maximum efforts so that people are able to perform their task
efficiently and effectively.

It includes ensuring availability of raw materials, determination of wages and salaries, formulation of
rules & regulations etc.

Therefore, we can say that good management includes both being effective and efficient.

-          Being effective means doing the appropriate task i.e., fitting the square pegs in square holes
and round pegs in round holes.

-          Being efficient means doing the task correctly, at least possible cost with minimum wastage
of resources.

Management can be defined in detail in following categories:

Management as a Process -As a process, management refers to a series of interrelated functions. It is the
process by which management creates, operates and directs purposive organization through systematic,
coordinated and co-operated human efforts.

Management as an Activity -Like various other activities performed by human beings such as writing,
playing, eating, cooking etc., management is also an activity because a manager is one who accomplishes
the objectives by directing the efforts of others. According to Koontz, “Management is what a manager
does”.

Management as a Discipline - Management as a discipline refers to that branch of knowledge which is

connected to study of principles & practices of basic administration. It specifies certain code of conduct to
be followed by the manager & also various methods for managing resources efficiently.

Management as a Group - Management as a group refers to all those persons who perform the task of
managing an enterprise. When we say that management of ABC & Co. is good, we are referring to a
group of people who are managing.

Management as a Science - Science is a systematic body of knowledge pertaining to a specific field of

study that contains general facts which explains a phenomenon. It establishes cause and effect
relationship between two or more variables and underlines the principles governing their relationship.
These principles are developed through scientific methods of observation and verification through testing.

Management as an Art - Art implies application of knowledge & skill to trying about desired results.
An art may be defined as a personalized application of general theoretical principles for achieving best
possible results.

Management as a Profession - A profession may be defined as an occupation that requires specialized

knowledge and intensive academic preparations to which entry is regulated by a representative body.

THE PROCESS OF MANAGEMENT

MANAGEMENT

[uncountable] the act of running and controlling a business or similar organization

[countable, uncountable] the people who run and control a business or similar organization

What is the management process definition?

Management process refers to a series of activities performed by managers to achieve

organizational goals.

Why management process is important?

Successful engineering managers typically require training and experience in business and
engineering to:

·    Operating effectiveness and efficiency is

·    Problem solving and operations improvement

THE PROCESS OF MANAGEMENT

Management is a process consisting of the following:

1.  Planning

2.  Organizing

3.  Directing/Leading

4.  Controlling

1.Planning

Planning is the process of defining the objectives of an organization, determining how those objectives
can be achieved, and specifying the resources needed to achieve them.

This is the most challenging part of the process because this is where you will initiate everything from
scratch. Start planning, and not just a plan but a specific action plan with projected results. Benjamin
Franklin once said, "If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail." So start planning, and not just a plan but
a detailed action plan. As a result of the fact that planning will assist the engineer and the management in
doing what should be done, it will direct you to the proper path, the right decision, and a positive
outcome. You also need to have goals in mind if you're going to be an engineer manager.

Well planning needs the following

•        Defining objectives

What exactly are you hoping to accomplish with this project, and why have you decided
to take it on with your team?

Deciding what/when/how/who

✔What is to be done

What needs to be done? Detailed planning is the only answer

✔When it is to be done

How long do you have to get it done? Will it end? Will the time limit be met?
Will it be done by the time it's supposed to be? Then, give yourself a deadline so you can
see how far you've come and where you are in the project.

✔How it is to be done

How should that be done? What is the procedure to finish the project
immediately?

✔Who is to do it

And who needs to do it? In a project, it's important to know who you need as
manpower for each phase of your project

2.Organizing

Organizing is the process of grouping people and resources together to work effectively toward
accomplishing a common goal. This function involves allocating resources to specific tasks and activities
based on their priority according to the company's strategic plan and organizational structure.

In this step, the people, materials, machines, equipment, and money need to be set up so that the goals can
be reached. Talk to people who can help with your project and fix what needs fixing.

·       Gathering and allocating resources,

·       Coordinating the work of the organization,

·       Deliberate creation a configuration that defines the followings:

✔How authority is structured,

Here, we need to find out what each of your teammates is good at. If you know how to
read a plan, are a good mason, tiler, or whatever, you could help. Let's figure out who is
in charge because of this. Who is in charge of each person on the team?

✔How communication flows

When we have everything in its proper place with regard to the hierarchy of authority, not
only will it be simpler for us to issue commands, but we will also be able to avoid
misunderstandings. After that, we will have an easier time coordinating the various
phases of the project.

✔How tasks are accomplished

We must also know how we will finish the task that is given, not just do the work.

3.Directing/Leading

Leading means motivating people towards achieving their individual goals and aligning them with
company goals through motivation techniques like recognition management process programs or bonuses
based on performance targets achieved by each employee.

Essentially, at this level you need to demonstrate that you are capable of leading others. You have a
responsibility to motivate your coworkers to improve their performance in the responsibilities that have
been delegated to them. Better performance, better results. That is why businesses also offer their workers
various bonus and incentive programs to participate in.

4.Controlling

Controlling is the process of ensuring that plans are carried out as intended so that an organization
achieves its goals.

Monitoring of his subordinate workers in an organization, as well as determining whether or not the
worker fulfills both the anticipated and actual deadlines for the task that was assigned to him. In addition
to keeping an eye on the employees under your supervision, one of the tasks associated with this phase is
soliciting comments from customers regarding the level of contentment they feel they have received from
the services they have received. In its most basic form, this process guarantees that all tasks and activities
are carried out in line with the plan that was created previously in order to produce maximum outcomes at
minimal expense while constantly maintaining quality standards.

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE ENGINEER MANAGER’S JOB

Depending on the type of product or services a firm produces, the engineer manager must have
the following qualification:

1. A bachelor’s degree in engineering from a reputable school; In some cases, a master’s degree in
engineering or business management is required;
2. A few years’ experience in a pure engineering job;
3. Training in supervision;
4. Special training in engineering management.

These qualifications will be of great help to the engineer manager in the performance of the
various management functions.

HOW ONE MAY BECOME A SUCCESSFUL ENGINEER MANAGER?

“Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other one
thing.” Do not let others define your success!

- Abraham Lincoln

Bear in mind that success is personal, you are the one who determines your own success.

May we always be reminded that a successful engineer is the one who is true to the oath we'll be taking.

OATH OF PROFESSIONAL CIVIL ENGINEERS

I _____________ of _____________ of hereby solemnly swear that I will support and defend the
Constitution of the Philippines; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I will obey the
laws, legal orders, and executive orders promulgated by the duly constituted authorities of the Republic of
the Philippines; and that I impose this obligation upon myself voluntarily, without mental reservation or
purpose of evasion.

I further solemnly swear that at all times and places I will adhere closely to the ethical and professional
rules generally accepted by the Civil Engineering Profession in the Philippines, and that I will well and
faithfully discharge to the best of my ability the duties and obligations incumbent upon a legally
authorized Civil Engineer practitioner.

So help me God.

How one may become a successful engineer manager?

Successful engineer managers do not happen as a matter of chance, although luck is a contributory factor.
It is very important for the engineer manager to know the various factors leading to successful
management.

Kreitner indicates at least three general preconditions for achieving lasting success as a manager. They
are as follows:

1. ability

2. motivation to manage, and

3. opportunity.

·  Ability

Managerial ability refers to the capacity of an engineer manager to achieve organizational objectives
effectively and efficiently.

Effectiveness, according to Higgins, refers to a description of "whether objectives are accomplished",

while efficiency is a description of the relative amount of resources used in obtaining effectiveness.”

To illustrate:

If a civil engineer was asked by his superiors to finish a 100-kilometer road cementing project within
eight months, he is said to be effective if he finished the job within the required period. On the other
hand, his efficiency is measured by the inputs (labor and materials) he poured into the project in relation
to the actual output (the 100-kilometer road). If the same output is made with less inputs, the more
efficient the civil engineer becomes.

Fundamental Abilities of Engineering Managers

1.   Leadership

Engineering managers must be able to lead a team to success. Managers should envision project success
and results. Having a clear purpose helps managers inspire, empower, and trust their personnel.

Capable leaders lead by example. Staff will be inspired by a disciplined, hard-working manager with a
positive attitude and a focus on success.

2.   Decision-making

Engineering supervisors provide answers, advice, and on-the-job decisions. Decision-making can be
based on experience, logic, or instinct. Managers should be adaptable when making judgments since
different situations necessitate different responses. Teams trust managers who can confidently pick
between options.

3.   Responsibility

Managers are accountable for results. The team enjoys this responsibility when the project succeeds.
However, the engineering manager is responsible for the team's missteps and bad decisions. Managers
should admit mistakes and use them to improve.

4.   Attention to details

Managers must be detail-oriented in all elements of engineering, which involves mathematical, analytical,
and technological issues. Complex systems can be damaged by simple errors. Engineering managers must
be able to evaluate their team's work. Managers need to know the specifics and the big picture to make
good judgments and lead well.

5.   Communication

Engineering managers must communicate like other managers. They manage teams and deal with
technical experts. Engineers must convey complicated ideas to clients, technicians, and other stakeholders
from varied backgrounds. Interviewing, networking, and team morale require social skills.

6.   Delegation

Delegation is another leadership skill. Managers must be hands-on but also able to see the big picture.
Managers who do everything themselves burn out and fail. Cooperation is crucial.

Delegating includes allocating responsibilities to team members and recognizing who can do them best.
Managers will monitor results and answer queries even if they delegate tasks.

·  Motivation to Manage

Many people have the desire to work and finish specific tasks assigned by superiors, but not many are
motivated to manage other people so that they may contribute to the realization of the organization's
objectives.

Motivation is another important skill for engineering managers because it means that they have energy
and enthusiasm for their job and their team members. An engineer manager should be able to inspire
others by providing them with guidance on how they can improve themselves and their work-related
skills so that they can be more effective at what they do every day.

As an engineer manager, how can you keep yourself motivated?

Lead and motivate – not just your team, but yourself, too. A team always looks up to its leaders,
especially, self-motivated leaders. Businesses always look out for mantras to motivate managers and
leaders. Self-motivation in leadership team is the primary essence of a successful brand. Great leaders are
surprisingly approachable, open, and always motivated. Read more to find few tricks or tips that self-
motivated leaders follow.
1) Stay connected to what you’re doing.
It’s one thing to do the work you’re paid to do; it’s another thing to be fulfilled by the work you
do. If you’re strictly doing your job for the money, or the title, or the company car, you could find that
over time it’s harder and harder to actually do the job. However, if you’re connected to what you do – if
you’re connected to what excites you – you’ll feel motivated to keep going because you’ll be achieving a
bigger purpose for yourself.

The key is to know your values – the principles, standards and qualities that guide you. To uncover your
values, recall a time in your life when everything was “just right.” You could choose something from
your personal life or your work. You might revisit a moment, a particular event, or a whole phase of your
life. Once you’ve allowed yourself some time to explore the memory, ask yourself what it was about that
memory that made it so memorable, so significant, so right. What made it a peak experience? Write down
any ideas that come to mind – words, phrases, images and symbols. When you’ve finished with your
notes, circle the words that meet the definition of values as principles, standards and qualities. There’s no
right or wrong during this process. Simply use your own words and your gut to tell you what your values
are.

2) Know what it takes to get better.

Motivation comes from constant learning on how to be better. Therefore, you should always be
asking yourself, “What am I trying to achieve?” and “What do I need to learn to reach my goal?” Realize
that this isn’t about taking a workshop or reading a book. It’s about challenging yourself to take on
something new and to stretch yourself into a new level of results.
The fact is that when you practice learning as an element of personal leadership, you stay motivated and
you get better results for yourself and for your work. By learning, you empower yourself to have, do and
be whatever you choose. And with empowerment comes confidence. You don’t second-guess yourself or
worry you’ll fail, because you know if you get it wrong, you’ll be able to figure out how to get it right.
How motivating is that!

3) Find the right support system.

When you’re a leader, all of the people below you lean on you. You guide them, support them
and tell them what to do. However, when you’re on top, you don’t have anyone above you to lean on.
That’s when you need to look outside of your organization, your role or even your industry for the people
who can cheer you on, mentor you and help you be your best.
To do so, look for people whose style you like – people who inspire you by the way they lead and the
results they get. Seek out people who resonate with you and who seem to mirror parts of yourself.
Connect with them to see what’s possible for you as a leader. Learn how you can become more with the
help of others who have already done what you want to do.
The more carefully you build your support team, the more powerful it will be. You don’t just ask people
to mentor you because you like them; you make them a part of your team because they enhance you. The
people on your support team help you stay motivated because they expand you by giving you access to
what you don’t know. Remember, it doesn’t have to be lonely at the top.

4) Maintain a sense of balance.

While maintaining a work/life balance is not a way to stay motivated, it is a way to keep from
becoming demotivated. When you’re serving everyone else, you have to remember to fill your own tank.

Remember that being an effective and motivated leader should not come at the expense of quality of life,
and quality of life should not come at the expense of business results. Work and life should be able to co-
exist, happily and successfully. They can and they have. The key is to define what that balance looks like
for you.
If you’re a senior leader, balance may not look very traditional. It might not be 9-5, Monday through
Friday, with holidays and weekends off. You need to understand what works for you and what fulfills you
in your personal life. What helps you restore your energy and find that sense of peace, rest and renewal?
Depending on your lifestyle and personal preferences, that could be taking a morning job, sleeping in on
days off, reading a fiction book or spending time with family. Even if you can’t carve out chunks of time,
at least create some mental space where you can relax, turn off distractions and let yourself go.

A management researcher, John B. Miner, developed a psychometric instrument to measure objectively

an individual's motivation to manage. The test is anchored to the following dimensions.

1. Favorable attitude toward those in positions of authority, such as superiors.

2. Desire to engage in games or sports competition with peers.

3. Desire to engage in occupational or work-related competition with peers.

4. Desire to assert oneself and take charge.

5. Desire to exercise power and authority over others.

6. Desire to behave in a distinctive way, which includes standing out from the crowd.

7. Sense of responsibility in carrying out the routine duties associated with managerial work.

High scores in the foregoing dimensions are associated with high motivation to manage.

·  Opportunity

Successful managers become possible only if those having the ability and motivation are given the
opportunity to manage. The opportunity for successful management has two requirements:

1. Obtaining a suitable managerial job, and

2. Finding a supportive climate once on the job.

Newspaper advertisements abound with needs for engineer managers. It is a little difficult to determine if
the firms requiring their services provide a supportive climate for effective and efficient management. A
supportive climate is characterized by the recognition of managerial talent through financial and
nonfinancial rewards.

month in January 5, 2023.Moreover, the highest paying cities for Engineering Managers near Philippines
is in San Pablo City which has Php 64,902 per month salary. When it comes to determining an
engineering manager’s salary, experience, education, region, industry, and the specific employer all
influence how much a manager makes. According to Payscale, the primary ways for an engineering
manager to increase their earning potential include changing employers, earning an advanced degree, and
expanding their managerial experience by taking on bigger projects and/or managing a larger team.

Payscale also notes the following skills can positively influence salary:

Job outlook is another area of interest for aspiring engineering managers. According to the
Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the number of jobs for architectural and engineering managers is
projected to grow by 4% between 2020 and 2030, with approximately 14,700 openings expected to be
available each year, on average.

Employment growth is also determined by the needs of a specific industry. The BLS expects
demand for civil engineers to rise due to the increased need to repair existing infrastructure. Demand for
electrical and mechanical engineering services is also expected to increase, as wind turbine farms and
other renewable energy sources become increasingly important. Projects in all of these fields require
experienced engineering managers to oversee teams and meet objectives.

SUMMARY

Engineers are known for their great contributions to the development of the world's civilization. There
are many areas where their presence is necessary like research, design and development, testing,
manufacturing, construction, sales, consulting, government, teaching, and management.

Engineering activities need to be managed and engineers are sometimes placed in positions where they
have to learn management skills.

Management is concerned with planning, organizing, leading, and controlling an organization’s

resources to achieve its mission and objectives.

There are certain qualifications required of the engineer manager.

One may become a successful engineer manager if the preconditions of ability, motivation to manage,
and opportunity to manage are met.

Why are engineering managers in high demand?

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, they predict growth in the civil engineering industry
due to the growing need to maintain and improve the nation's physical infrastructure. As wind turbine
farms and other renewable energy sources grow in prominence, so too will demand for electrical and
mechanical engineering services. In addition, as our society develops, engineers are needed for building
modern infrastructures, buildings, etc. Experienced engineering managers are needed to guide teams and
ensure success in projects across all of these industries.

Why is engineering project manager important?

Project managers play a crucial role in the engineering industry, ensuring that projects are finished on
time and within budget, supervising teams working on many, concurrent, high-stakes projects, and
communicating with clients to establish realistic expectations.  For example managing a project in an
engineering setting will teach you important lessons like the value of a solid structure. It is undeniable
that following a predetermined procedure reduces the amount of time and effort put into projects, and
while each project is unique, the fundamentals of project management are consistent across all
initiatives. Engineering projects are more effective when they adhere to a regular procedure.

How may organization be classified according to the engineering jobs performed?

An organization can be placed into one of three levels based on the amount of engineering work that it
completes. Level One includes organizations that complete the smallest amount of industrial activity,
such as retail industry businesses. Level Two includes organizations that complete a reasonable amount
of civil and structural engineering, such as public transit enterprises. Level Three includes organizations
that complete a great number of infrastructure work, such as the construction industry.
