Answer the following questions:


1. What is the place value of the digit that immediately comes at
the right of the decimal point? What is its value?
2. What is the next place value? What is its value?
3. What are the digits in the ones place? Give the value of each.
4. What is the digit in the tens place? What is its value?

The number is read as five tenths.

Another example: place 0 is in the tenths place. To read
this, first, read the digits to the left of
0. 05 the decimal point as a whole number.

Hundredths digit on the right. Hence, it is read as
“five hundredths”

Read the problem.

1.Kosh jogs everyday in the park. One Sunday, he jogged a total


distance of 3.46 kilometers. How do we read 3.46?

3.46 is read as “three and forty-six hundredths”. The


decimal point (•) is read as “and”. We also write this
number in the way we say or read it.
Let’s read some more decimal numbers.
0.6 - six tenths
6.34 - six and thirty-four hundredths
8.9 - eight and nine tenths

2.Mark and Ara walk a distance of 0.95 kilometer in going to school.


How do you read and write the decimal number?

The decimal 0.95 is read as ninety five hundredths. In expanded


form, it means 0.9 + 0.05. it is written as 0.95

When reading a decimal number, read it like reading a whole


number, then, say the place value of the last digit.

Study these examples in reading decimal numbers.


0.4 is read as four tenths
0.6 is read as six tenths
0.09 is read as nine hundredths
0.83 is read as eighty-three hundredths

Look at these examples on writing decimal numbers.

Eight tenths is written as 0.8. It is written one decimal place after
the decimal point.

Three hundredths is written as 0.03. It is written two decimal


places after the decimal point. The 0 as a placeholder takes the place
of the tenth since the decimal number has no tenths.

Twelve hundredths is written as 0.12. It is written as a decimal


number with two decimal places
