SECTION A : READING SKILLS (20 marks)

1. Read the passage given below. (1x10 = 10)
1. No treatment on the market today has been proved to slow human aging. But one intervention,
consumption of a low-calorie yet nutritionally balanced diet, works incredibly well in a broad range of
animals, increasing longevity and prolonging good health. Those findings suggest that caloric restriction
could delay aging and increase longevity in humans, too. But what if someone could create a pill that
mimicked the physiological effects of eating less without actually forcing people to eat less, a 'caloric-
restriction mimetic'?

2. The best-studied candidate for a caloric-restriction mimetic, 2DG (2-deoxy-D-glucose), works by

interfering with the way cells process glucose. It has proved toxic at some doses in animals and so cannot
be used in humans. But it has demonstrated that chemicals can replicate the effects of caloric restriction;
the trick is finding the right one.

3. Cells use the glucose from food to generate ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the molecule that powers
many activities in the body. By limiting food intake, caloric restriction minimizes the amount of glucose
entering cells and decreases ATP generation. When 2DG is administered to animals that eat normally,
glucose reaches cells in abundance but the drug prevents most of it from being processed and thus
reduces ATP synthesis. Researchers have proposed several explanations for why interruption of glucose
processing and ATP production might retard aging. One possibility relates to the ATP-making
machinery’s emission of free radicals, which are thought to contribute to aging and to such age-related
diseases as cancer by damaging cells. Reduced operation of the machinery should limit their production
and thereby constrain the damage. Another hypothesis suggests that decreased processing of glucose
could indicate to cells that food is scarce (even if it isn’t) and induce them to shift into an anti-aging
mode that emphasizes preservation of the organism over such ‘luxuries’ as growth and reproduction.

On the basis of your reading of the above passage, answer the following questions by choosing the best answers
from the given options:

1. Consumption of a low-calorie and balanced diet worked well in a broad range of animals’ .
a) fleshy body growth
b) long life and good health
c) nutritionally balanced diet
d) food habits

2. What can suspend aging and increase longevity in humans?

a) caloric restriction
b) unbalanced diet
c) high nutritious food
d) physiological effects

3. What is the name of the phenomena of mimicking the physiological effects of eating less without
actually forcing people to eat less?
4. Which is considered as the best-studied candidate for a caloric-restriction mimetic?
a) Deoxy -D- Glucose
b) ATP
English Core

c) 2DG
d) Glucose

5. Why can 2DG not be used in humans?

6. ATP is generated from glucose by .

a) Food
b) Adenosine
c) Cells
d) molecule

7. What is reduced when 2DG is administered to animals that eat normally?

8. The second hypothesis proposes that lessened processing of glucose could direct cells that food is scarce
and give indication to change into to preserve the organism from further growth.
a) conservation
b) damaging cells
c) an anti-aging mode
d) ATP production

9. Find the word from the passage which means the same as ‘depletion’. (Para 1)
10. Find the word from the passage which means the same as ‘duplicate’. (Para 2)
2. Read the following passage carefully with attention to the graph given below: (1X10=10 marks)
1. If you have watery eyes, there are several possible reasons. They range from allergies to infections,

blocked tear ducts, and funny looking eyelids. A warm, wet towel placed on your eyes several times a
day can help with blocked tear ducts. So does a surgical procedure to clear blocked tear ducts.

2. Grittiness basically means your eyes feel scratchy or rough. Many people describe gritty eyes as a
sensation similar to having a particle of sand in the eye. The discomfort canbe mild or severe. You may
also experience other symptoms like: dryness. Dry eye syndrome occurs when tears fail to keep the eye
lubricated. The risk of dry eye becomes more common with age and women may face it sooner than
men. Some causes include windy, smoky or dry environments and prolonged periods of screen time.
Over-the counter medications such as artificial tears, ointments or gels will help. A doctor may also
recommend any of the following treatments too: warm compress on the eyes, massaging eyelids or using
eyelid cleansers.

3. Bags under eyes, i.e. mild swelling or puffiness under the eyes, are common as you age because the
tissues around your eyes, including some of the muscles supporting your eyelids, weaken. Normal fat
that helps support the eyes can then move into the lower eyelids, causing the lids to appear puffy. To
relieve yourself, use a cool compress on the skin around the eyes for a few minutes at a time and cut
down on fluids before bed time and limit salt intake to reduce your likelihood of waking up with excess
eye puffiness.

4. Normal eye pressure ranges from 12-22 mm Hg, and eye pressure of greater than 22mm Hg is
considered higher than normal. When the Intraocular pressure (IOP) is higher than normal but the person
does not show signs of glaucoma, this is referred to as ocular hypertension. These tips may help you
control high eye pressure or promote eye health. Eat a healthy diet and exercise safely. Limit your
caffeine, yet, sip fluids frequently. Sleeping with your head elevated will also help reduce IOP.

5. A person with total blindness won't be able to see anything. But a person with low vision may be able
to see not only light, but colors and shapes too. However, they may have trouble reading street signs,
recognizing faces, or matching colors to each other. If you have low vision, your vision may be unclear
or hazy. Telescopic glasses, Lenses that filter light, magnifying glasses, Hand magnifiers or Reading
prisms are ideal to combat this problem.

6. Photophobia literally means "fear of light." If you have photophobia, you're not actually afraid of
light, but you are very sensitive to it. The sun or bright indoor light can be uncomfortable, even painful.
In reality, it’s a symptom of other problems like migraine headaches, dry eyes, and swelling inside your
eye. It can cause pain whenever you're in bright sunlight or indoor light. You might want to blink or
close your eyes. Wearing tinted glasses may help.

7. Double vision occurs when a person sees a double image where there should only be one. The two
images can be side by side, on top of one another, or both. The condition can affect balance, movement,
and reading ability. If double vision affects just one eye, it is monocular. If it affects both eyes, it is
binocular. Treatments include: wearing glasses, eye exercises, wearing an opaque contact lens,
botulinum toxin (Botox)injections into the eye muscles, causing them to remain relaxed, wearing an eye
patch and surgery on the muscles of the eye to correct their positioning

8. A healthy diet is the foundation to lasting vision. People with busy schedules may neglect a balanced
diet. Feeding your body with plenty of green, leafy veggies like kale and spinach with a happy helping
of carrots to complete an entrée will keep your vision protected and long-lasting.

READING (20 Marks)

1. Read the passage given below: 10 Marks

1.Today’s woman is a highly self-directed person, alive to the sense of her dignity and the importance of her
functions in the private domestic domain and the public domain of the world of work. Women are rational in
approach, careful in handling situations and want to do things as best as possible. The Fourth World
Conference of Women held in Beijing in September 1995 had emphasized that no enduring solution of
society’s most threatening social, economic and political problems could be found without the participation
and empowerment of the women. The 1995 World Summit for Social Development had also emphasized the
pivotal role of women in eradicating poverty and mending the social fabric.
2. The Constitution of India had conferred on women equal rights and opportunities political, social,
educational and of employment with men. Because of oppressive traditions, superstitions, exploitation and
corruption, a majority of women are not allowed to enjoy the rights and opportunities, bestowed on them.
One of the major reasons for this state of affairs is the lack of literacy and awareness among women.
Education is the main instrument through which we can narrow down the prevailing inequality and
accelerate the process of economic and political change in the status of women.
3. The role of women in a society is very important. Women’s education is the key to a better life in the
future. A recent World Bank study says that educating girls is not a charity, it is good economics and if
developing nations are to eradicate poverty, they must educate the girls. The report says that the economic
and social returns on investment in education of the girls considerably affect the human development index
of the nation. Society would progress only if the status of women is respected and the presence of an
educated woman in the family would ensure education of the family itself. Education and empowerment of
women are closely related.
4. Women’s education has not received due care and attention from the planners and policymakers. The
National Commission for Women has rightly pointed out that even after 50 years of independence, women
continue to be treated as the single largest group of backward citizens of India. The role of women in overall
development has not been fully understood nor has it been given its full weight in the struggle to eliminate
poverty, hunger, injustice and inequality at the national level. Even when we are at the threshold of the 21st
century, our society still discriminates against women in matters of their rights and privileges and prevents
them from participating in the process of national and societal progress.Various Committees and
Commissions have been constituted before and after the independence to evaluate the progress in women’s
education and to suggest ways and means to enhance the status of women. The female literacy rate has gone
up in the 20th century from 0.6 per cent in 1901 to 39.29 per cent in 1991 but India still possesses the largest
Class XII Page 1
English Core

number of illiterate women in the world. The female literacy index for the year 1991 shows that there are
eight States which fall below the national average. The most populous States of the country, UP, MP, Bihar
and Rajasthan fall in the category of most backward States as far as female literacy is concerned.
5. The prevailing cultural norms of gender behaviour and the perceived domestic and reproductive roles of
women tend to affect the education of girls. Negative attitude towards sending girls to schools, restrictions
on their mobility, early marriage, poverty and illiteracy of parents affect the girl’s participation in education.
6. Women’s political empowerment got a big boost with the Panchayati Raj Act of 1993 which gave them 30
per cent reservation in Village Panchayats, Block Samities and Zilla Parishads throughout the country. The
National Commission for Women was also set up in 1992 to act as a lobby for women’s issues.

7. The educational system is the only institution which can counteract the deep foundations of inequality of
sexes that are built in the minds of people through the socialization process. Education is the most important
instrument of human resource development. Educational system should be used to revolutionize the
traditional attitudes and inculcate new values of equality.

LITTLE AWARENESS OF OCEAN HEALTH
The oceans are not currently perceived to be in immediate danger, and the need for action to protect
the oceans is not readily apparent. Lack of urgency about the oceans’ health is demonstrated by the nearly
half of the public (46%) who report that they do not know enough about the open, deep oceans to give an
opinion and the slightly over a quarter (27%) who lack opinions about coastal waters.
We also find a plurality of four in ten Americans (39%) rates the health of coastal waters and ocean beaches
as “only fair;” close to a quarter (23%) say it is good or excellent, and only one in ten (10%) says poor.
Perceptions of ocean health has not changed much since the 1997 Mellman study in which one in five (21%)
Americans characterized the condition of the oceans as good or excellent, and four in ten (42%)
characterized the quality of the oceans as “only fair.”
Americans who live within a two-hour drive of the ocean are more familiar with coastal waters, but four in
ten of them are still unable to offer an opinion about the deep oceans. Similarly, Midwesterners register more

uncertainty about the health of coastal waters than do residents of other regions, but when the topic is the
health of deep oceans, residents of all regions are about equally unsure.
Those more likely than others to rate the oceans’ health as excellent or good include:

• College educated;

Section A: READING SKILLS (20 marks)

I. Read the passage below. (10 Marks)

There is a companion aspect to human endeavour along with our innate will to survive.
We begin life with a curious fascination of what is possible in life and what we can become. We all
have dreams. We all have hopes and aspirations, passions and thoughts. Some blossom into brilliant
reality while others wither and die before ever taking form. Many of us look upon the success of others
and lives lived with passion and purpose, success and triumph and wonder why for them and not for
me? There is a very real reason. It all stems from the philosophy we take into the process. All dreams
and goals begin as a simple thought. Emotion is the next step in the process that takes over and pushes
us to take the first step. That first step is what transcends thought into the beginning of physical reality.
What truly creates success lies however is the continuation of activity, moving with purpose in the
necessary direction to see it through. It is what stops this continuous action that steals away our dreams.
The simple truth to the process is to understand that we don’t get to know. We don’t get to know
how it is going to happen. We don’t get to know how and when opportunities will present. We don’t
get to know the timeline. When I started my career in radio in 1983, part time at $4.25 per hour I had
no way of knowing how it was going to happen or when. All I knew was what I wanted and just kept
moving towards it one day at a time. That simple process took me to the number one radio station in
the country which eventually led to launching a company and career in personal and professional growth
that has allowed me to reach higher and create more than I ever thought possible.
One of the great philosophical examples of what it takes to actually realize the goals we set out to
accomplish comes from a prisoner of war during Vietnam. John Stockdale was the highest ranking
officer held in the Hanoi Hilton. Over the 8 years he was there he was beaten and starved, tortured and
deprived. He survived when almost no one who entered this camp did. When interviewed years later,
he was asked why it was that he survived. He said, “That was easy, the others were the optimists”.
When pressed for an explanation he said, “The others would say, “Hang in there, we will be out by
Christmas” and Christmas would come and go. Then they would state that they believed they would be
out by Easter and that day would come and go. Over time it eventually broke their spirit and they died”.
John Stockdale said the moment he was captured he made the decision that he didn’t know how and he
didn’t know when but he absolutely knew that one day he would be free and that’s what saved his life.
The constant focus on a prediction of a goal's arrival is what creates the belief that it is not happening
for us and ultimately leads to stopping what would have brought success.
So therein lies the truth. If we can’t predict where our next phone call or opportunity will come
from, how could we possibly be able to predict when our goals and dreams will happen? Putting a false
estimate of next year or next Thursday makes as much sense as predicting the weather on any random
February day in 2011. It is the accepting of this simple truth that will allow for it to happen. Not only
Class XII Page 1
English Core

for some but for all. Adopt this philosophy “I don’t know how and I don’t get to know when but I
absolutely know and believe it will happen”. If you do, one day others will look upon your life and
wonder how it was possible for you. I can’t tell you when it will happen, but I do know this. It will.
Have an excellent day. ( Source-

II. Read the passage below (10 Marks)

1.This National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 is the first education policy of the 21st century and aims
to address the many growing developmental imperatives of our country. This Policy proposes the
revision and revamping of all aspects of the education structure, including its regulation and
governance, to create a new system that is aligned with the aspirational goals of 21st century education,
including SDG4,(Sustainable Development Goal 4 is about quality education and is among the 17
Sustainable Development Goals established by the United Nations in September 2015. The full title of
SDG 4 is "Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities
for all") while building upon India’s traditions and value systems. The National Education Policy lays
particular emphasis on the development of the creative potential of each individual. It is based on the
principle that education must develop not only cognitive capacities - both the ‘foundational capacities
’ of literacy and numeracy and ‘higher-order’ cognitive capacities, such as critical thinking and problem
solving – but also social, ethical, and emotional capacities and dispositions.
2.This National Education Policy envisions an education system rooted in Indian ethos that contributes
directly to transforming India, that is Bharat, sustainably into an equitable and vibrant knowledge
society, by providing high-quality education to all, and thereby making India a global knowledge
superpower. The Policy envisages that the curriculum and pedagogy of our institutions must develop
among the students a deep sense of respect towards the Fundamental Duties and Constitutional values,
bonding with one’s country, and a conscious awareness of one’s roles and responsibilities in a changing
world. The vision of the Policy is to instill among the learners a deep-rooted pride in being Indian, not
only in thought, but also in spirit, intellect, and deeds, as well as to develop knowledge, skills, values,

and dispositions that support responsible commitment to human rights, sustainable development and
living, and global well-being, thereby reflecting a truly global citizen.
3.This policy envisages that the extant 10+2 structure in school education will be modified with a new
pedagogical and curricular restructuring of 5+3+3+4 covering ages 3-18 as shown in the representative
figure and elaborated in detail later under Chapter 4.

3.Currently, children in the age group of 3-6 are not covered in the 10+2 structure as Class 1 begins at
age 6. In the new 5+3+3+4 structure, a strong base of Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE)
from age 3 is also included, which is aimed at promoting better overall learning, development, and well-
being.

4.Over 85% of a child’s cumulative brain development occurs prior to the age of 6, indicating the critical
importance of appropriate care and stimulation of the brain in the early years in order to ensure healthy
brain development and growth. Presently, quality ECCE is not available to crores of young children,
particularly children from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Strong investment in ECCE
has the potential to give all young children such access, enabling them to participate and flourish in the
educational system throughout their lives. Universal provisioning of quality early childhood
