1. Enables the hardware to work properly. It uses mini programmes
called “drivers”. 2. Ensures all software works properly, e.g. downloads updates/bug fixes for applications. 3. Creates a system allowing you to create folders, saves file, and retrieve them afterwards. 4. Supplies the user with a way of interacting with the computer device, i.e. it provides a user interface (command line or GUI- Graphical User Interface).
OPEN SOURCE & PROPRIETARY SOFTWARE
Open source: the source code is made widely available, so
programmers can customise it. The software is usually free.
Proprietary: the source code is kept secret, so only the developing
company can alter it. You also usually have to pay for proprietary software.
