Operating Systems

4 main functions of an operating system:

1. Enables the hardware to work properly. It uses mini programmes

called “drivers”.
2. Ensures all software works properly, e.g. downloads updates/bug
fixes for applications.
3. Creates a system allowing you to create folders, saves file, and
retrieve them afterwards.
4. Supplies the user with a way of interacting with the computer
device, i.e. it provides a user interface (command line or GUI-
Graphical User Interface).

OPEN SOURCE & PROPRIETARY SOFTWARE

Open source: the source code is made widely available, so

programmers can customise it. The software is usually free.

Proprietary: the source code is kept secret, so only the developing

company can alter it. You also usually have to pay for proprietary
software.
