A Comparative Analysis of Operating

System:
Case study of Windows Operating and
Mackintosh Operating System.

The operating system is a software which works as

an interface between a user of a computer and the
computer hardware system and also manages and
coordinates the use of hardware among various
applications and users. It is a collection of software
that helps in managing hardware resources and
provides common services for computer programs.
It is one of the most essential parts of the computer.
The five major activities of an operating system
are Process creation, Processing state,Process
synchronization, Process communication and
Deadlock prevention.

There are many software functions that depend on

OS such as cost allocation of processor time, mass
storage, printing, while hardware functions such as
input and output of memory allocation system calls
need the OS as well.

The Macintosh runs on its own operating system,

Mac OS (currently Mac OS X).
Mac OS is a completely capable OS that provides
functionality and services similar to Windows or
Linux OS. Some of the code base and features of
Lisa OS have been incorporated in Mac OS.

Since 2005 the Apple Mac line of computers are

Intel-based, but the MacOS is only licensed to run
on an Apple Mac which is the first multitasking
operating system. Mac OS X, with its UNIX
origins, gives us the option of a character-based
interface Apple Computers is the only
manufacturer of Macintosh.
Transferring files and applications from old Mac to
a new one is a more efficient process when the
computer is to migrating from one windows PC to
another. Apples Mac operating system has some
powerful productivity and multimedia apps that are
preinstalled.

COMPARISON OF WINDOW AND

MACKINTOSH OPERATING SYSTEM
Window OS
Released in 1985 and was supposed to be
a Graphical User Interface (GUI) on top of
MS-DOS. Later with the release of
Windows 95 version all features were
integrated. This was kind of a revolution
in the market.
Mackintosh OS
It is the oldest compared to windows was released
in 1984. From the beginning, it was a Graphical
User Interface (GUI). Later in 2005, its design and
architecture were changed to Intel x86 based
Architecture.

Windows OS
The Graphical User Interface (GUI) is an integral
component of Windows, so it is not replaceable.
There is also command shell program (cmd) that
can directly run. The name itself suggests that
programs are run in separate windows. Each
program is run in a particular window, that’s why
we can have several programs running at the same
time.

Mackintosh OS
The graphical user interface and visual theme of
Apples Mac OS is AQUA. Its original theme was
water with droplet-like components and the
concepts of reflection and translucency were used.
Its aim is to inculcate colour, depth and complex
textures into a visually appealing interface in
macOS applications.

Windows OS
The job of file management is done by Windows
Explorer in Windows. It shows a list of files,
folders and storage drives on our computer. For
example, when a file has to be copied, we open the
desired folder which has the file to be copied or
moved and then drag and drop the file to target
folder or drive.
Windows explorer can be opened by the following
steps: -
1. Start-> all programs-> accessories-> Windows
explorer.

Mackintosh OS
We use the FINDER to organize and manage our
files. Finder, in association with apps like
Automator can help users locate documents, search
files, manage folders and organize them. The
shortcut to opening Finder is simultaneously
pressing the Command and N keys.

Windows OS

Windows is a closed source operating system

where the users or security community doesn’t
have access to the source code. So, while installing
Windows, we can select privacy protecting options:
-While installing Windows, we have to accept
Express settings or we can simply
click on Customize settings.
1. On the Customize Settings screen leave Use
SmartScreen online service to help protect against
malicious content.
2. Then we have to continue with Windows
installation

Mackintosh OS
MAC operating system is very unique compared to
the rest as they are specifically designed for Apple
devices. There is no third-party developer. As a
result, MAC has a strong shield around it that
protects the OS from malwares and viruses. Along
with this, MAC also supports the user
acknowledgement while executing any files.

CONCLUSION

Thus operating system acts as an interface between

users and computer hardware.
In this CASE STUDY , we have compared
operating systems Windows and Mac OS on the
basis of certain features. Result of our comparison
is that none of them are bad.
Each one has their own advantages and
disadvantages. Target is to give an overview to
users, which can help them choose an operating
system that fits their needs.

Qes 1:- Difference between windows operating system and macos?

Ans:-

Windows Operating System is one of the most

Windows operating system:-
popular operating systems and it is used by millions of people all
over the world. This OS was developed by “Microsoft
Corporation” in 1985 and they take more than 90% of the market
share from the global market in the IT sector (Computer Operating
System). The reason behind the popularity of this OS is that it comes
up with a graphical user interface and with preloaded applications
which makes the user easy to use and make their experience good.
They can easily use any third-party application in this OS without
writing any codes and do many types of things
Mac os:-

MacOS is the computer operating system (OS) for Apple

desktops and laptops. It is a proprietary graphical OS that
powers every Mac.
MacOS performance is generally quick and responsive due to
the OS being optimized for the specific hardware. Apple
releases a new version of macOS approximately every year.

QES2.ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF

WINDOWS AND MAC OS

ADVANTAGES OF WINDOWS:-
1. CONVENIENC: - All forms of Microsoft Windows
have something regular in it which makes it clients
simple to move starting with one form then onto the
next.
2. HARDWARE CUSTOMIZATION: - Windows
stage is most appropriate for game and
programming engineers. Windows have a huge
number crowd so designers want to make utilities,
games, and programming for windows OS.
3. VARIOUS SUPORT OF FUNCTIONS: - Getting
use to Windows, one would realize that there are
many functions one can do almost anything quite
easily with when call up.
4. COMPATIBILITY:- Windows accommodates
almost every applications, game works and different
types of drivers.
5. SUPPORT:- Windows provides very good support
for their products.
6. HARDWARE CUSTOMIZATION: - We can
upgrade the hardware according to the need.

DISADVANTAGES OF WINDOWS:-

1. SLOWER:- Windows operating system, particularly Vista

and Windows 7 needs a lot of system resources like
registers, cache, main memory, processor, disk
space, and this makes the system runs slower.
2. PRICE:- The cost of purchasing Windows operating
system is high and very few users can afford it and
this necessitate cracking and makes pirated software
version available.
3. SECURITY: - IT is less secure than mac os. We
need to purchase antivirus to secure our pc.
4. Pre-Install Bloatware: - it comes with some pre
install apps and software and sometimes we not able
to uninstall them which cause our PC runs slower.

ADVANTAGES OF MAC OS:-

Fewer virus attacks:

As macOS is the second most used operating system and has less number
of active users so it has fewer virus attacks also. The other reason of virus
safety is its UNIX relationship which is more secure than Windows OS.

Good customer support:

Mac users get good response from its support team as compared to other
operating systems. Apple has skilled engineers which helps the user in
fixing the issues in their hardware and software.

Similar GUI for all the products:

macOS has same graphical user interface (GUI) as found in other Apple
products like iPhone and tablets. Users feel comfortable in using macOS
if they shifted from other Apple products.

Performance and long life:

As Apple makes both hardware and software so it’s hardware

communication is very efficient and it improves performance. The
operating system and hardware work great. Apple computer has a longer
life than other computers. The battery timing of mac laptops is also
longer.

Can run Windows:

You can run the Windows operating system if you have macOS installed
by using Bootcamp or parallels software.

DISADVANTAGES OF MAC OS:-

Expensive:

The minimum cost of a Mac PC is higher than $1000. You can get good
Windows PC at $1000 with more hardware specification.

Fewer games and software AVAILABLE:

Most game developers prefer to make games for the Windows OS
because they have more percentages of users. Mac users have fewer
games available. Also, mac computers have low graphics capability to
run high graphics games.

No hardware customization:

If you buy any Mac computer/laptop then you cannot change its hardware
parts like processor, graphics card etc. For some mac computers, you can
change hardware and RAM but it is not for all mac computers.

Less hardware used:

The new version of macOS computer supports less USB ports and they
also not shipped with CD/DVD writer.
