The Computer Software
Computer software, often simply referred to as
"software," is a collection of instructions,
programs, data, and other non-tangible
components that enable a computer system to
perform specific tasks and functions. It is a critical
part of any computer system and is designed to
provide the functionality that users need.
Below are examples of different softwares

There are two primary categories of computer
software:
System Software: This category includes software
that is essential for the operation of a computer
system. The primary purpose of system software is
to manage and control the computer's hardware
resources and provide a platform for running
application software. Examples of system software
include operating systems (e.g., Windows, macOS,
Linux), device drivers, utility programs, and system
libraries.
Operating System

• Operating system (OS) is a collection of

software that manages computer hardware
resources and provides common services for
computer programs.
Operating System Manufacturers and Versions

• There is more than one operating system, and there are many
manufacturers.
1. Windows - Microsoft Corporation

Microsoft Windows is a family of operating systems for personal computers

Operating System Manufacturers and Versions

• Mac OS X - Apple, Inc.

• Mac OS is a series of graphical
user interface-based operating
systems developed by Apple Inc.
for their Macintosh line of
computer systems. The original
version was the integral and
unnamed system software first
introduced in 1984 with the
original Macintosh, and referred
to simply as the System software.

3. Red Hat Enterprise Linux - Red

Hat, Inc.
• Red Hat is the leader in
development, deployment, and
management of Linux and open
source solutions for Internet
infrastructure - ranging from
embedded devices to secure Web
servers.
Operating System Manufacturers and Versions

4. SUSE Enterprise Linux -

Novell, Inc.
• SUSE Linux Enterprise is an
interoperable platform that is
vital to the operation of an
organization. SUSE Linux is most
commonly used in running day
to day business routines.
Operating System Manufacturers and Versions

5. Ubuntu - Canonical Ltd.

• Ubuntu is a free open source
operating system based on Debian
Linux distribution. Ubuntu is
named after a South African
philosophy “ubuntu” which means
“humanity

6. QNX - QNX Software Systems

• QNX is a commercial Unix-like

real-time operating system, aimed
primarily at the embedded
systems market.

7. VxWorks - Wind River

Systems, Inc.

• VxWorks is an original product of

Wind River. It is a real-time
operating system intended for
embedded devices.
Categories of System Software (based on
different functionalities)
1. BIOS and firmware
-provide basic
functionalities to operate
and control hardware
connected to or built into
the computer. BIOS is
used to utilize the
computer system itself
while firmware is for the
devices.
Categories of System Software (based on
different functionalities)
2. Operating System
Controls the utilization of
hardware, software, and
information resources of a
computer.
Like a traffic cop-ensures that
the different programs running
at the same time do not
interfere with each other.
In charge of security, ensuring
that unauthorized users can not
access the system.
Classifications of Operating system
a. Multiuser – allows the user to run two or more programs at
the same time
b. Multiprocessing – supports running a program on more
than one CPU
c. Multitasking – allows more than one program to run
concurrently
d. Multithreading – allows different parts of a program to run
concurrently
e. Real time - responds to inputs instantly
Examples of Operating System
a. Android
-is a popular operating system for
mobiles primarily for touchscreen
devices, cell phones, and tablets.
-first developed by Android Inc. and
acquired by Google in 2005.
-allows users to operate mobile devices
intuitively, with phone interactions
that mirror common motions, such as
swiping, pinching, and tapping.
Today, Google also uses Android
software in wristwatches, televisions,
and cars.
Examples of Operating System
b. Disk Operating system
-is the first operating system
used and developed for IBM by
Microsoft Corp., that runs from
hard disk drive.
-became available in two
different versions – PC-DOS
from IBM and MS-DOS from
Microsoft.
-cannot do multitasking, it can run
one program at a time
Examples of Operating System
c. iOS
-is the mobile operating system
developed by Apple that runs the
iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices.
-utilize multi-touch interface in
which simple gestures are used to
operate the device, such as swiping
your finger across the screen to
move to the next page or pinching
your fingers to zoom out.
Examples of Operating System
d. Linux Operating System
-is an open source operating system,
which means that the code used to
create Linux is available online and
can be edited.
-an OS that is based on UNIX that can
be installed in a computer and laptop.
The Linux Kernel developed mainly
by Linus Torvalds and it is based on
UNIX.
Examples of Operating System
e. Mac Operating System
-Is the official name of Apple
Macintosh operating system.
-has graphical user interface
(GUI) that utilizes windows, icons,
etc. designed only for Apple
computers and laptops.
-works hand in hand with iCloud
to keep images, documents and
other stuff.
Examples of Operating System
f. Windows operating system
-is the leading and most
popular operating system.
-almost 90% of the computers
in the world uses Windows
operating system.
-uses GUI, virtual memory
management, multitasking and
support for many peripheral
components.
