3. Maria Clara Embodiment of purity and femininity, when she and every Filipina are
more than that.
4. Padre Damaso Many Catholic schools today use censored versions of Noli and Fili to
dilute the evil ways of the Spanish friars in those novels.
5. Basilio Represents young educated Filipinos who are unconcerned about
societal problems.
6. Crispin Signifies innocent people who have been mistakenly accused of crimes
they did not commit.
7. Elias He personifies all the virtues of the villager’s gratitude, abnegation,
sacrifice and devotion to country.
8. Sisa Reflects the Inang Bayan, or Motherland, who became an outsider as a
result of the Spaniards' mistreatment of the Filipinos, whereas Maria
Clara symbolized the Filipino women who were repressed and
mistreated by the Spaniards.
9. Doña Victorina Symbolizes those who have a distorted view of their identity.
Everything that is indigenous is inferior and everything foreign as
superior. It is the comedic form of ''colonial mentality''.
10. Doña Consolacion A horrible, profane companion who berates the ensign and engages
him in physical brawls heard throughout the village.
