SHORT ESSAY. Read and analyze each question. Answer each item briefly but
concisely.
1. Why do you think Rizal wrote the original Noli Me Tangere in Spanish, considering
that it is the language of the colonizers?
Noli was originally written in Spanish, so the likelihood of Spanish authorities reading it first was
very high; exactly what Rizal desired. Copies of books were redirected to churches, many were
destroyed, including several anti-Noli writers entered the fray.

2. Prove or Contradict: Noli Me Tangere is anti-clerical and anti-patriotic.

"Noli Me Tangere," Rizal's novel, is not, in my opinion, an anti-clerical novel. It was essentially a report
about the abuses of Dominican and Augustinian friars. The book cannot be considered anti-clerical
because it did not criticize all of the friars.

3. Between Elias and Ibarra, who do you prefer? Why?

I’d choose Elias over Ibarra in Rizal’s Noli since he has a far more distinct personality. He
embodies the villager’s virtues of thankfulness, abnegation, sacrifice, and devotion to his
homeland. Rizal’s love and devotion inspired him to create him.

WORKSHEET 23
REFLECTION: What is freedom? How is lack of freedom portrayed in the Noli Me
Tangere? Hos is the situation in the novel similar or different from today?

The novel portrays a lack of freedom that includes the government being dominated by the
Spanish, favoring trade from other countries, and nipa huts being razed in the metropolis of Manila.
Filipinos were referred to as Indios, a clear manifestation of prejudice. Only the Ilustrados' family
members were allowed to attend school. Women in the Philippines are not allowed to attend
university. They are also forbidden from working professionally or freely with men, yet they are
allowed to manage their own businesses. In addition, all vessels must fly the Spanish flag. Dr. Jose
Rizal was able to raise Filipino consciousness of their independence throughout the Spanish period
through his written letters. Women in the Philippines are not allowed to attend university. They are
also not permitted to engage in professional job or collaborate freely with men, despite the fact that
they are permitted to establish their own businesses. The power or right to act, talk, or think as one
wishes without interference or limitation, as well as the absence of a dictatorial government, is
referred to as freedom. You will never be genuinely free as long as you assume you are free “from”
something.
