DRILL HOLE UNDERSIZE

One reason is that the same drill bit can be used on different types of surfaces.

The size of the hole being drilled depends upon the material on which it is being drilled.

Another reason why the drill bit size is smaller is that that of the drilled hole is that the shank

tends to get worn out fast.

This one happens to be high speed steel suitable for shallow holes in metal,

plastic or wood. I would choose a different type for ceramics or deeper holes.

It isn’t customary to use a centre drill for general drilling purposes but without a
means to centre the drill bit, due to each twist drill having a chisel point it is apt to “walk
around” as it rotates.
The chisel point of the twist drill is important in the prescribed method of drilling
efficiently and accurately. First mark the position of the required hole and using a centre
punch make a dot in the material.

Take the twist drill of the size hole that is needed and look at the chisel point -
that drill needs a pilot hole a little larger in diameter than the width of that chisel point.

Select the correct size of pilot drill and look at the chisel point - that pilot drill should
have a pilot hole a little larger than the width of that chisel point…

Each successively smaller twist drill should have a pilot hole until the size of the
drill is reached that has a chisel point that fits into the centre dot when drilling can
commence with reasonable certainty each drill will cut smoothly and continuously and
stay sharp longer.
