Appendix 1

Title of the hands-on activity:

Test your own colorant on different fabrics.
 Done.
Objective(s) of the hands-on activity:
State your expected learning point(s) of the activity. What do you want to find
out from the activity?
 To compare between 2 different fabric and to check the absorability in each
kind of fabric. First fabric is canvas fabric and the second one is sutra fabric.
And we compare 2 different fabric.

Procedures:
Describe what you have done during the hands-on activity, in passive voice
 We prepare our own colourant, fabric and camera handphone. And we mix
3 different colourant with the 2 different fabric and after that we wash and
squeeze the fabric and after that attach in paper.
Results:
State/demonstrate all the results that you have obtained through the activity in
this section (Place your photos here).
Discussion: Discuss the results obtained and activity done. Address all of the
following questions in this part:
i. What makes you think your colourant a potential dye for fabric?
 Because can merges with the fabric. But one of fabric after wash can’t
merges with the colourant. But the canvas fabric more better to absorb
with the colourant. The sutra fabric after wash and squeeze back become
white colour again. The canvas still same colour.

ii. What is the chemical(s) that responsible for the colour of your colourant?
 HCL pekat
 H2SO4 pekat
 NaOH 10%
 NH4OH 10%
 Matriks

iii. Which fabric uptakes the colourant better? Why?

 Canvas fabric. Because after wash the colourant still in the fabric. The sutra
fabric back become white again after wash and squeeze. The canvas fabric
still same colour after wash and dry.

iv. Is your colourant a better dye as compared to the commercial fabric dye?
Why?
 No, because the colourant that the lecture give us more merges rather than
colourant that we bring our ownself. So the colourant that we bring maybe
not contain with strong chemical.
v. What are the common additives and their functions in textile dyeing? Give at
least three examples of any additives that are added to the dyes or during
dyeing process.
 Red : Strawberry, flower rosela
 Blue : butterfly pea, cabbage
 Pink : raspberry

Conclusion(s): Summarize what you have learnt from the activity.

 First we bring our own 2 pieces bottle colourant and the lecture already
bring 1 bottle his own colourant. And the lecture give us 2 different fabric
and one chemical bottle plastic to mix with the colourant. After that we
mix with 3 different colour which is red, blue and pink. After mix we take
photo and wash and squeeze after that take a photo again. We do it with
3 different colour.
 So after dry we bring our fabric to home and we conclude that 2 different
fabric obtain 2 different result. And we know after lab session. After lab
session we know that canvas fabric more absorb colourant rather than
sutra fabric.
