Theory:
A dye, which is capable of reacting chemically with a substrate to
form a covalent dye substrate linkage, is known as reactive dye.
Here the dye contains a reactive group and this reactive group
makes covalent bond with the fibre polymer and act as an integral
part of fibre. This covalent bond is formed between the dye
molecules and the terminal –OH (hydroxyl) group of cellulosic
fibres on between the dye molecules and the terminal –NH2
(amino) group of polyamide or wool fibres. Reactive dyes forms
covalent bond with fibre polymer and thus attach itself with fibre. It
is now a days mostly used for dyeing cotton yarn and fabric. It is a
cationic dye. Cold brand reactive dyes have higher reactivity.

Objectives:
1.To gain an understanding of reactive dyes on cotton fabrics.
2.To gain knowledge of cold brand dyeing.
3.Understanding how to calculate a recipe.

Apparatus:-
1.Lab dryer machine.
2.Beakers.
3.Glass Rod.
4.Pipette.
5.Measuring Cylinder.
6.Digital Balance.
7.Tri-pod stand.
8.Gas Burner.
9.Thermometer.
10.Pot.
Recipe:-
Sample weight= 6 gm
Reactive Dyes (Cold Brand)-Red Color= 2%OWF (on the weight
of fabric)
Glauber salt= 40 gm/l
Soda ash= 15 gm/l
Leveling agent= 1 cc/l
Wetting agent= 1 cc/l
Sequestering agent= 1.5 cc/l
Time=45 min
Temparature = 45°C
pH=11-12
ML=1:15

Calculation:-
Here,
Fabric weight= 6gm
M:L=1:15
Total liquir=(6×15)cc
=90cc

We know,
Required Chemical=Total liquor× Recipe amount/1000
For Stock Solution= (Total liquir× Recipe amount)/stock%
Now,
Required Chemical for Dyes (red color)= 6×2%
=6×2/100
=0.12cc
Required Chemical for Glauber Salt.
=90×40/1000
=3.6cc
Required Chemical for Soda Ash
=90×15/1000
=1.35cc
Required Chemical for leveling agent=90×1/1000
=0.09cc
Required Chemical for wetting agent=90×1/1000
=0.09cc
Required Chemical for sequestering agent=90×1.5/1000
=0.135cc
Fresh Water = 90-(0.09+0.09+0.135)
= (90-0.315)
= 89.68cc

Result:-
Amount of size material= (Dyeing before fabric weight-Dyeing
after fabric weight) gm
= (6-5.5) gm
=0.5gm

Procedure:
 According to dyeing curve at first auxiliaries and water are
added in the dye bath.
 And it is kept for 5 minute.
 Then material, dye is added respectively.
 Then after 10 minutes salt is added.
 After adding salt dye bath is heated to 400-500C kept for 20-
30 minutes. This is the exhaustion period of dyeing.
 Then alkali is added in the dye bath.
 After adding alkali the dye bath is heated for 40-60 minute at
50-600 This is the fixation period.

Precaution:
1.We should stirring properly the solution.
2.We should maintain proper temperature and pH.

Conclusion:
Now a days Reactive dye is used for dyeing cellulosic fibres
which is mostly used in most of the dyeing industry. Cold brand
reactive dye has reactive group of high reactivity. We come to
know about the function of the ingredients of dyeing solution used
for dyeing with cold reactive dye. By this experiment we came to
know that cold brand reactive dyes that are of the high reactivity
because they take less temperature and less time for dyeing. This
practical will help us in our study life as well as job life. Especial
thanks to our teacher and his assistants for great co-operation.
