CHAPTER THREE

3.0 RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter describes the procedure followed in realizing the objectives of this research. It lays
out the method employed in the research in order to obtain authentic and relevant data to achieve
the set objectives. Therefore, for proper understanding of the design programme, primary and
secondary data were sourced, analyzed and interpreted in order to obtain information about
convention centres, design requirements, planning standards, flows and structure so that it can be
applied in the planning stage of the work.

3.1 THE PRIMARY DATA

Primary data containing quality information was obtained using case studies. These case studies
involved the study of the building typology with reference to local and international examples to
ascertain its character, functions, spaces, and relationships between spaces. This is done with a
view to evaluate the performance of the facilities in order to improve on the future designs.

3.2 SECONDARY DATA

The secondary data used for the purpose of this research were obtained from reviewing relevant
literatures, journals, magazines, and different publications. All reviews were done on literatures
which contain information pertaining history, existing types, categorization, spatial functions,
structures, materials, services amongst others which are related to convention centres, exhibition
and public function facilities in order to glean quality information needed for this research.
