FIRST SEMESTER A.Y. 2022 – 2023

GROUP ACTIVITY
(September 7, 2022)

INDUSTRIAL ENGINEER
An industrial engineer designs, develops and implements systems to integrate the
various parts of a production process, such as employees, machines and materials. These
engineers work to improve the efficiency of processes to help businesses reduce operational
costs. They determine how to maximize the productivity of operations to make a product or
provide a service. Industrial engineers can work in many industries, such as aerospace, health
care or research and development. While their job responsibilities can vary based on their
employer, industrial engineers typically have some common duties, including:

• Assessing operational processes to determine ways to improve cost, efficiency

and quality
• Evaluating facilities, equipment, materials and employees to devise new methods
to promote efficiency
• Designing, testing and evaluating systems to ensure they integrate correctly and
work as expected
• Developing systems to evaluate a system's output and meet quality control
standards
• Estimating the cost of new operational processes and making cost-effective
recommendations to company leaders
• Drafting the design of a workspace, including materials and equipment, using
computer drafting programs.

PROS AND CONS OF INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERS

PROS CONS
• Ability to solve problems • High-pressure environment
• Respected profession • Low job flexibility
• Range of industries • Many required skills
• Job satisfaction • Demanding education
• Career advancement • Lengthy career path
• Salary • Hazardous work sites
• Outlook • Independent work
INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING
Description Pictures of Jobs/Careers of a
Mechanical Engineering

Focus Industry - The focus of each

engineering field is one of the biggest
differences. The mechanical engineering
industry centers on the design, development,
integration, maintenance and repair of
mechanical components and machines.
Industrial engineering, however, focuses on
the improvement of business and production
processes.

Field applications - In application, industrial

and mechanical engineering can also differ.
For instance, mechanical engineering can
apply to projects that result in the construction
of physical structures or objects, like civil and
structural engineering projects. This
engineering industry can also apply to the
design and development of machinery and
equipment necessary for use in other
industries, such as medical devices and
manufacturing equipment.

Educational requirements - The mechanical

and industrial engineering fields may also
have different requirements for professionals
in each industry. For instance, mechanical
engineering may require professionals to have
credentials in mechanics, thermodynamics,
hydraulic systems and machine components.
Engineers in this field typically earn degrees in
mechanical engineering with respect to their
specializations, such as electrical engineering,
software development or automotive design.

Career opportunities - The job opportunities

can vary across both industries, too. In
mechanical engineering, professionals
commonly pursue careers in subfields like
electrical engineering, automotive
engineering, aeronautical and aerospace
development and structural design. Industrial
engineering, conversely, may see
professionals entering careers in more
corporate and business settings, where they
work in sales, budget analysis, process
management, supply chain management and
product engineering. While the career pursuits
can differ between mechanical and industrial
engineering, developing your knowledge of
basic engineering concepts and your business
and technical skills can prepare you for a role
in either field.
