A rod-like fin with 300 mm in length and 5 mm in diameter has one end maintained at temperature Tb.
The surface of the rod is exposed to ambient air T∞. The temperature distribution along the rod can be
described using the following mathematical model:
−cx
T ( x)=T ∞ +(T b−T ∞) ∙ e
Where,
T(x) is the temperature at distance x
T∞ is ambient temperature = 298 K
Tb = 373 K, and
c is a lumped coefficient

(b) If the rod is constructed from copper with c1 = 0.0142 (material 1), calculate and plot the temperature
distribution along the rod using a step of 15 mm. [Hint: ex in Excel is written as exp(x)]
(1.0 Mark)
Excel
(c) Using interpolation, find the temperature at distance of 117 mm for c1 = 0.0142 (material 1).

(d) Calculate and plot the temperature distribution of the rod if it is constructed from aluminum alloy
(material 2) with c2 = 0.0212, and stainless-steel (material 3) with c3 = 0.0756. Plot all three cases on
one plot. (2.0 Marks)
Excel
(e) If a new material (material 4) with c4 = 0.055 is used, would the temperature drop faster or slower
(along the rod) than the stainless-steel rod? Explain your answer. (Bonus 0.5 Mark)
The Stainless-steel rod temperature would drop Faster, because the exponential value is lower in
(material 4)
