Teaching Ideas

1. RUNNING DRILL
- Teacher places flashcards all over the room
- Then says a vocabulary item associated with a flashcard
- Sts have to run to the correct flashcard, stand in front of it and say the word as a class.
- Option B: Make sts line up and put the flashcards on the board. Sts/line move to the correct flashcard.

2. POINT TO
- T places the flashcards on the board/around the room
- T says one word and sts have to point to it.

3. PART OF IT
- T shows part of a flashcard and sts have to guess
- T gradually reveals more and more until sts guess

4. CHINESE WHISPER
- Dvidide sts into two teams and have them line up in two single lines
- Show the two sts at the front one flashcard
- Sts turn around and whisper the word down the line
- The last st comes to the front and says the word to the teacher.
o Option B: comes and grabs the correct flashcard
o Option C: comes and writes the word on the board.

5. DRAWING
- Sts work in pairs (so all sts play at the same time) or, you can ask one st to come to the front.
- T sticks flashcards on the board
- One of the sts looks at the flashcard and decides which flashcard to draw, draws it and the other st guesses.

6. ODD ONE OUT


- Arrange flashcards into sets of four
- 3 belong to the same category, 1 doesn’t
- Put flashcards on the board.
- Sts tell which word doesn’t belong

7. CHARADES
- Sts come to the front, show him/her a flashcard and he/she has to act out something
- The other sts guess
o Option B: Two teams. One sts from each team comes to the front. T shows a flashcard to both sts
and have them compete to have their team guess the vocabulary word first.

8. FLASHCARD GRID
- Take 9 flashcards and put them on the board in 3 rows of three. (draw a grid)
- Repetition of the vocabulary
- Take one card away. Drill the sts on the cards.
- Sts have to remember which word was taken.
- Repeat until all are gone.

9. MEMORY GAME ON THE BOARD/WHATS MISSING?


- Stick the cards up on the board and have sts memorize them
- Sts close their eyes and you take one/two cards away (also: you can ask 1 sts to go out)
- Sts open their eyes and tell you what’s missing
- Option B:
o Stick all the cards on the board
o Make sts memorize them
o Take all of the cards away
o Have sts write down all of the words they remember (you can use word cards) (you can use 12/15
cards)

10. GUESS WHAT YOU ARE


- Have all the sts stand up and put a different flashcard on each of their backs
- Sts have to wander around asking yes/no questions to figure out which card is on their back
- Option B:
o Have pair of flashcards.
o Sts have the same flashcard. They have to ask yes/no questions and find their match

11. FLASHCARD SPEED COMPETITION


- Sts work in groups of 4/5 (or two teams)
- T puts the cards face up on a desk
- T says one word and one st from each work to grab the correct flashcard first

12. IMPROMPTU SPEECHES


- Lay flashcards face down in a pile
- Sts blindly pick one card
- Sts have to make a 30 second or 1’ impromptu speech based on whats on the flashcard

13. CORRECT OR INCORRECT


- One side of the room is the correct side and the other side is the incorrect side
- Option B: 1 make sts line up and they move right and left
- Option C:
o clapping: sts clap when it is correct
o shhhhh: sts say “sh” then it is incorrect

14. PICTIONARY
- Two teams
- 1 st from each team comes to the board
- T shows the st one F and they have to draw as quickly as possible
- The first team to guess gets a point

15. SPEED LINES


- Two teams
- Two lines in front of the board
- T shows a flashcard to the sts at the head of the lines
- Option A: sts compete to say the word. The sts who says it first gets a point and they both move to the end
of the line. Repeat with all of the remaining sts
- Option B: sts come to the board, write the word and move to the end of the line, the next sts writes the
following word under. Repeat with all of the remaining sts. When they finish, T corrects/checks spelling. T
gives one point to each well written word.

16. FLASH
- T shows the flashcard very fast and sts guess

17. SLOWLY SLOWLY


- T covers the flashcard
- T gradually reveals the picture
- Sts identify what’s on the flashcard
18. MAGIC EYES
- T sticks the flashcards in a row on the board
- Sts repeat the words with the T in a rhythmic way
- T removes the first flashcard and continues “singing” the words
- T removes the second flashcard, and so on until there are no more flashcards

19. LIP READING


- T sticks the flashcard on the board
- “I’m going to say one of the words”
- T moves lips saying a word (no sound)
- Sts guess

20. HANDS ON HEADS


- Divide the class in two teams
- T sticks flashcards on the board and assigns one line to each group
- T says a word and sts have to put their hands on heads when they listen to the word the belongs to their
team
- T can mention many flashcards so that sts keep on listening

21. FLASHCARD CHAIN


- Ask sts to sit in a circle with you
- T passes the first flashcard to the sts on her/his left and sks a question. (example: do you like tigers?) (the
flashcard is a tiger). St answers: yes, I do/no, I don’t and grabs the flashcard and passes to the next st asking
the same question the T has asked him/her. When the 1 st flashcard is on the 3rd/4th st, the t grabs another
flashcard and asks the same question: do you like zebras?

22. BACK TO BACK


- Ask two sts to come to the front
- Put them back to back
- Give them one flashcard each
- Count 1,2,3 and sts have to make a step forward as you are counting
- Then t says: turn back and sts have to say what’s on the other st’s flashcard.

23. RACE DRILL. ROCK PAPER SCISSORS


- T sticks flashcards on the board. One next to the other.
- T calls two sts
- Each st starts at each extreme of the line
- T says: 1,2,3 go and Sts start mentioning the items/saying a sentence.
- When sts meet on one flashcard they have to play “rock, paper, scissors” to get the points of all the
flashcards mentioned before.

24. POSSESSIVES
- T asks sts to get a piece of paper
- On the top they have to draw a “boy” if they are boys, and a “girl” if they are girls.
- Then they will have to write their favorite:
o 1. Animal: dog
o 2. Color: red
o 3. Toy: ball
- Once they finished, sts make a paper plane with that paper. Once finished, they throw the plane. Then,pick
up one.
- Once they pick up one, they read the info using possessives:
o His favorite animal is….
o His favorite color is….
- Sts have to guess who they are talking about.

25. MINGLE
- T prepares sets of flashcards with different questions
- T give sts the cards
- Sts get in pairs and ask and answer the questions on the card
- T says “mingle” and sts have to go to another st and ask the questions

26. CANNONS, HEARTS AND BOMBS


- T divides the class in teams (1, 2 or 3)
- T needs to have a paper with the answers

- Sts have to say: This is _lucy__. She is wearing a __t-shirt___


- T looks at her paper with the answers and checks if there is a bomb (this means they lose a life). If there is a
heart, this mean that they win a life and if there is a cannon means that they can take away a life from
another team.
