Palawan people are called Tagbanuas. They have their own hand
writing system. Palawan men are skillful in wood carving while
women and children are well-trained in weaving.
Tingkop, a colander-shaped harvest basket with subtle pattern of
bamboo strips, is one of their masterpieces.
Tagbanua woodcarvers do simple etching exposing the original
white grain used for rituals or toys for children.
Manungul Jar is the most important artefact in Palawan. It is a
vessel where the deceased are buried. This jar is covered with
incised curvilinear design and on the top is a boat with human
figure that represents the voyage to the afterlife.

PANAY ISLAND is a triangular island, located in the western part of
the Visayas. It is about 160 km (99 mi) across. It is divided into four
provinces: Iloilo, Antique, Capiz and Aklan, all in the Western Visayas
Region. Panay is the only main island in the Visayas whose provinces
don't bear the name of their island.
Hand loomed Weaving is the primary art and one of the best
sources of livelihood in Panay. Hablon- a heritage industry in Ilo-ilo.
Patadyong is a traditional Filipino cloth worn by women and wrapped
around like a skirt.

The island’s main linguistic division reflects the separation of the
eastern and western coastal areas from each other by the central
mountain range: Hiligaynon, from Panay, is widely spoken in western

coast.

1. As we continue to study the arts and crafts of Negros Island, we will
know that Negros Occidental’s capital is Bacolod City and it occupies
the north western half of Negros Island, known as the “Sugarbowl of
the Philippines”. Negros Occidental also produces more than half the
nation’s sugar output. Negros Island was originally known to the
natives as “Buglas”. When the Spaniards arrived in April 1565, they
named it “Negros” because of the dark-skinned natives they found. It
is also rich in structures and buildings that are remnants of a once
affluent lifestyle. The Palacio Episcopal (1930), San Sebastian
Cathedral (1876) and the Capitol building (1931) are popular Bacolod
landmarks.

Bohol is derived from the word Bo-ho or Bo-ol. The island was the
seat of the first international treaty of peace and unity between the
native king Datu Sikatuna and Spanish conquistador Miguel López

Bohol handicrafts
Basket weaving is among the earliest industries that have
been established in Bohol particularly in the town of Antequera,
where most of the weavers have developed the skills and have
handed them down
from generation to generation. For years this has been the
town’s industry that earned them the title “ Basket Capital of
Bohol”
Broom-making and pottery in Albur; jewelry-making in Dauis;
furniture- making in Loboc; and wood carving in Antequera.
Amarela Resort in Panglao showcase the unique craftsmanship of
Boholano woodworkers and local artists.
Authentic native crafts are made with all natural materials that
signify our indigenous peoples' historical connection to the land,
which they have historically been dependent on for survival.
Porcupine Quill crafts is an example of traditional crafts that are
valued by collectors around the world. Many designs were applied
to birch bark baskets, clothing and other regalia for ceremonial
purposes. The dream catcher is another good example of a craft
that has culture and purpose attached to it. It is used not only to
prevent bad dreams but also used traditionally to tell a story and
teach a lesson at the same time.

islands of Visayas, they introduced the Catholic religion and used it to
gain the trust of the people. They built churches that helped propagate
their faith.
Molo church in Iloilo depicts the fusion of Gothic and Renaissance
styles. It is said that this is a “Women’s Church” because of the 16 women
saints inside. Its patron is At. Ann, the mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Miag-ao Church is a Roman Catholic church located in Miagao, Iloilo. It
is famous for its artistic sculptural relief carved in the façade of the church
that stands as the living legacy of a rich culture and illustrates the way of
life of the people of Miag-ao, anchored in a strong foundation of Christian
faith. It is also acclaimed as a UNESCO world Heritage site. The Ruins is
in Talisay, Negros Occidental. Don Mariano Lacson and wife Maria
Braganza had 10 children together. In the year 1911, while nearing the
full term of her 11th pregnancy, Maria Braganza had met an accident after
slipping and having a miscarriage which caused her sudden death.
Because of this accident, it left Don Mariano to feel heartbroken and
inconsolable thus, deciding to later on build a mansion in remembrance
of his dear wife in a 440-hectare sugar plantation.

3. The Ruins is the remains of the ancestral home mansion of the family
of Don Mariano Ledesma Lacson and Maria Braga Lacson. It is situated
in Talisay, Negros. It is an example of neoclassical architecture built by a
wealthy haciendero for his Portuguese wife in the early 1900’s. The
mansion was burned during World War II leaving behind the concrete
structure that stands to this day. The design is elegant and the color
changes from white to gray and orange to red as the sunset touches the
structure.

LOOKING BACK
The Masskara festival had its beginning back in 1980 when the local
government and the villagers decided to hold a celebration of sorts to
express and relieve grief that they were experiencing due to the
economic crisis and city-wide tragedy. The whole month of October is
filled with parties and people enjoying themselves within Bacolod City’s
MassKara Festival.

REMEMBER
Famous for its elaborate and bright masks and costumes, Masskara
Festival wows its beholders with its heart-pounding music, blissful
people, spectacular street parade and mind-blowing parties. The
symbol of the Masskara Festival is a smiling mask, which was
envisioned to show that the people of Negros Province manifests a
happy spirit in spite of all the crisis they have gone through. It is
alternately known as the 'festival of smiles' due to the tradition of the
masks that the people wear donning smiles to represent the message
of happiness. Because of the festival, Bacolod is also designated as
the 'City of Smiles'.
