Negros Island is one of the Visayan Islands. It is separated from the

island of Panay to the northwest by the Guimaras Strait and
from Cebu island to the east by Tanon Strait. The island is bordered
on the north and south by the Visayan and Sulu seas, respectively.

8
The island’s main linguistic division reflects the separation of the

mountain range: Hiligaynon, from Panay, is widely spoken in western
Negros, whereas Cebuano, from Cebu, is dominant on the eastern
coast.

nation’s sugar output. Negros Island was originally known to the
natives as “Buglas”. When the Spaniards arrived in April 1565, they
named it “Negros” because of the dark-skinned natives they found. It
is also rich in structures and buildings that are remnants of a once
affluent lifestyle. The Palacio Episcopal (1930), San Sebastian

Bohol is derived from the word Bo-ho or Bo-ol. The island was the
seat of the first international treaty of peace and unity between the
native king Datu Sikatuna and Spanish conquistador Miguel López
de Legazpi on 16 March 1565 through a blood compact alliance
known today by many Filipinos as the Sandugo.

The Boholano culture is much like the culture of the Philippines. It

is based on the majority population of Austronesian or Malayo-
Polynesian people on the island. There are influences from
indigenous Melanesian people such as the Eskaya tribe, and from
the colonizing Spanish and trade with Mexico.

BRIEF INTRODUCTION OF THE LESSON

Officially, the municipality of Basey (Waray: Bungto han

Basey; Tagalog: Bayan ng Basey), is a first class
municipality in the province of Samar, Philippines.
The word Basey comes from the vernacular Baysay (means
beauty). This is in deference to its most beautiful erstwhile
inhabitant named Bungansakit. When the new town adopted the
name, a competition in her honor caused Bungansakit's original
home village of Balud to be renamed Guibaysayi (means most
beautiful).

A Banig is a hand woven mat usually used in East
Asia and Philippines for sleeping and sitting. Technically, it is not
a textile. Depending on the region of the Philippines, the mat is
made of buri (palm), pandan or sea grass leaves. The leaves are
dried, usually dyed, and then cut into strips and woven into mats,
which may be plain or intricate.
The Samals of Sulu usually make their mats out of buri leaves.
Often, dyed strips of buri are woven to produce a design.Another
region in the Philippines which is famous for intricately designed
mats is Basey,Samar. Unlike Sulu, the banig in Basey are made up
of tikog leaves. The leaves are dyed with different strong colors to

BRIEF INTRODUCTION OF THE LESSON

The architecture of the Philippines reflects the historical and
cultural traditions in the country. Most prominent historic structures in the
archipelago are influenced by Austronesian, Chinese, Spanish,

2
and American architectures. When the Spaniards first set foot in the
islands of Visayas, they introduced the Catholic religion and used it to
gain the trust of the people. They built churches that helped propagate
their faith.
Molo church in Iloilo depicts the fusion of Gothic and Renaissance
styles. It is said that this is a “Women’s Church” because of the 16 women
saints inside. Its patron is At. Ann, the mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Miag-ao Church is a Roman Catholic church located in Miagao, Iloilo. It
is famous for its artistic sculptural relief carved in the façade of the church
that stands as the living legacy of a rich culture and illustrates the way of
life of the people of Miag-ao, anchored in a strong foundation of Christian
faith. It is also acclaimed as a UNESCO world Heritage site. The Ruins is

MIMAROPA, is also known as Region IV-B is a term for the provinces of

Mindoro (Occidental and Oriental), Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan.
Everyone was very hospitable and welcoming, starting from the airport

MIMAROPA is one of the Philippine's top producers of rice, banana,
coconut, mango, cashew, papaya and cassava, which are included
among the country's top export products.

The Visayas broadly share a maritime culture with strong Roman

Catholic traditions merged with cultural elements through centuries of
interaction and inter-migrations mainly across the seas of Visayas,
Sibuyan, Camotes, Bohol, and Sulu; and in some secluded areas merged
