The octet rule
• Atoms share electron pairs until they have acquired an octet of valence electrons
• Each atom shares electrons with neighbouring atoms to achieve a total of eight
valenceelectrons (an ‘octet’).
Central theme: All the valance shell electron pairs ( both bond and lone pair) are oriented in
space around the central atom as far apart as possible to minimize the repulsion
Lone pair - lone pair > lone pair - bond pair> bond pair - bond pair
