1. How did these people influence Jose Rizal? What personal qualities they have that Jose
gained from them? (40 points)

a) Don Francisco – Don Francisco became Jose’s role-model, he looked up to his

father especially in terms of how a man should be, Jose remembered him as a
constant companion of his boyhood. The personal qualities Jose inherited from his
father according to Rafael Palma, Jose inherited from his father the profound
sense of dignity and self-respect, seriousness and self-possession.
b) Doña Teodora - Jose gained most of his educational attainment from the influence
of his mother, she pretty much built the foundation of Jose’s learning ever since he
was a kid. Doña Teodora served as his first instructor, teaching him to read and
instilling in him a value for reading as a tool for education and a fulfilling way to
pass the time. He quickly came to understand that time is the most valuable gift in
life since she taught him to never waste even a single second of it. And according
to Rafael Palma, Jose inherited from his mother the temperament of a poet and a
dreamer, and bravery for sacrifice.
c) Paciano - While Jose was a student in Spain, he acted as his guardian. Paciano
had a significant impact on Jose's life. He would frequently send money to Spain
and write letters to his younger brother to inform him of the abuses committed by
the friars in the Philippines. Being noble is one of the qualities Jose inherited from
his brother since Jose considered him as “The noblest of all the Filipinos”.
d) Sisters – Jose’s sisters basically influenced him in almost all aspects of his life,
some of them became his playmate, some helped him through his education along
with his mother, some supported him financially, and some helped him with the
women he has been with. And Jose learned his way around women because of his
sisters, those characteristics around women he got that from her sisters.
e) Uncle Jose Alberto – he gave Jose a wise direction in his studies which also
served him as one of Jose’s early teachers. He also influenced Jose to travel and
explore the world.
f) Uncle Gregorio – he instilled the love for education in Jose’s mind, and also he
opened Rizal’s mind in the idea of success. Jose got the habit of making visual
pictures of everything from Uncle Gregorio in which he used when he was learning
other languages.
g) Uncle Manuel – as a child, Jose was sickly and frail, that is where Uncle Manuel
contributed in Jose’s life. He was a man of athletic build and helped Rizal with his
physical development. He also taught Jose to love and admire the beauty of
nature.
h) Maestro Justiniano Cruz – it was him who advised Jose’s parents to send Jose to
Manila so that Jose can pursue higher education. He noticed that Jose was a fast
learner and he also carefully nurtured and admired Jose’s skills especially in
drawing and painting.
2. Why did Don Francisco choose Maestro Cruz’s school in Biñan than the existing
Parochial School in Calamba? (10 points)

- Because Biñan is where Jose’s lineage came from and not only that, his grandparents
are from Biñan and also served as the town mayor or captain de pueblo.
3. What kind of education Jose Rizal experienced in Biñan?(10 points)

- During that time, Rizal experienced an education where it is typical where a child of an
ilustrado can receive it. It is characterized by the four R’s- reading, writing, arithmetic, and
religion.

4. Explain the two injustices that shaped Jose Rizal’s nationalism. (20 points)
How these injustices shaped his value on nationalism? (20 points)

a) Imprisonment of his mother Doña Teodora.

b) Execution of GOMBURZA

- Despite the absence of any supporting evidence, his mother was wrongfully detained on
suspicion of plotting to poison a family member. However, the treatment she received from
the police, who made her go 50 kilometers from Calamba to the provincial jail in Santa Cruz,
made the arrest even worse. She spent two years there in prison before being released. And
to the execution of the GOMBURZA, the three priests who were accused of treason and
sedition in Spain were executed by garrotte after the Spanish prosecutors bribed witnesses
to testify against them. These injustices shaped Rizal to be the hero that we know, his will to
fight for our country grew stronger and he understood that for a very long time we thought
that we are treated fairly, yet we are abused and belittled. Because of the imprisonment of
his mother, he realized how unfair the Spanish government is, yet later on his life, despite in
the face of death he accepted his fate calmly and quietly with dignity just like what his
mother did when she was imprisoned. And the GOMBURZA execution made Rizal write his
novel Noli Me Tangere which was fuelled with the solidified nationalism within him.
