OBJECTIVES: At the end of this lesson you will be able to

MATTER Matters! 1.) Define matter

2.) Give examples of matter
3.) Make a concept map on the classification of matter.

The things that you see in the pictures are common stuffs that we see or feel around us. These are called
MATTER or the materials that make up the world.

Scientifically, matter is defined as anything that occupies space (volume) and has a mass.
What is volume and mass?
 Volume is a measurement of how much space something takes up
Example:
A Coca Cola soft drinks in 1 Liter bottle. The space occupied by the liquid soda is its volume which is 1
Liter.

 Mass is a measurement of how much something weighs. We use a scale to measure mass.

Mass and volume is the basic property of matter.

Let’s try to identify the following if it is matter or not matter according to its basic
property. The first two numbers are done for you.

Example Does it have Does it have Matter or Not Matter?

Activity 2: SELF-CHECK

1
Figure 1 shows that matter can be classified
as PURE SUBSTANCE and MIXTURES.

What are PURE SUBSTANCE?

It is a chemical composition of matter with

distinct properties that cannot be broken
down into simpler materials.

There are two (2) types of Pure Substance

1.) Elements
2.) Compounds
Figure 1: Classification of Matter According to its
Composition

What is an element?
 a pure substance which cannot be broken down or changed into
another substance using chemical means.
 It is the basic chemical building blocks of matter.
 There are 118 known elements which are listed in the Periodic
Table Gold Silver
 A few examples of elements are gold, silver, iron, oxygen and
carbon
There are three (3) types of elements
1.) Metals
Iron Chlorine
2.) Nonmetals
3.) Metalloids

Take Note! You must have a PERIODIC TABLE of elements. And memorize
the symbol and names of each of the 118 elements!

What is a Compound?
 It is a chemical combination of two or more elements in fixed
ratios.
Table salt Water
 Examples of compounds are:
o Water (H2O) – combination between Hydrogen and
Oxygen
o Carbon dioxide (CO2) – combination between Carbon and
Oxygen
Rust
o Table Salt (NaCl) – combination between Sodium and
Can you identify the

ingredients of halo-halo?
What are MIXTURES? Write it in the box
It a combination of two or more material or substances that can be
separated by physical means. _______________________

There are two types of mixtures: _______________________
1.) Heterogeneous Mixture _______________________
 A type of mixture in which its composition is uniform all _______________________
throughout. _______________________
Example of heterogeneous mixture is our favorite “halo-halo” _______________________

2.) Homogeneous Mixture ________________
 A type of mixture that has a uniform composition or has one
phase When you mix coffee
Example of homogeneous mixture is the coffee your mama powder and sugar in a cup
and papa drinks in the morning. of hot water, do you see
the coffee powder? ______.
Do you see the sugar? ____.
Explain your answer.
