 Title of Textbook/LM to Study: Science 7 Learner’s Material

 Chapter: _1_ Pages: 27-42 Topic: Elements and Compounds

Let Us Discover

Hello! How are you doing? How did your most recent activity go? Are you
prepared for our upcoming lesson? Let's discuss elements and compounds today.
Do you recognize the various examples in each of them?

Alright! Elements are made up of the same type of atom or atoms. They are
the most basic form of matter and cannot be broken down into its constituent parts.
Each element is comprised completely of a single atom type. Each element is
distinct, with no two having the same set of attributes. Some are in the same state as
others, yet their attributes differ. Metals such as iron, gold, and silver are among the
elements.

Compounds are made up of two or more elements, such as water, which is

made up of hydrogen and oxygen; salt, which is sodium and chlorine; and rust,
which is generated when iron combines with oxygen. Compounds are generated
when two elements are mixed and can be broken down into their constituents using
a chemical process. It has characteristics that are distinct from the characteristics of
the elements that make it up.

Did you know that the food you eat contains elements and chemicals as well?
They are known as nutrition information and ingredients and can be viewed and read
on product labels. Look at the food label examples provided below.

INGREDIENTS: WATER, CANE SUGAR, OYSTER

EXTRACT (WATER, SOYBEANS, SALT AND
REAL OYSTERS), MONOSODIUM GLUTAMATE
(FLAVOR ENHANCER), IODIZED SALT,MODIFIED
STARCH CARAMEL COLOUR, DISODIUM
INOSINATE AND DISODIUM GUANYLATE
(FLAVOUR ENHANCERS) AND 0.1%SORBIC
ACID (PRESERVATIVE)

In the food label we can identify substances such as sodium, monosodium

glutamate and iodized salt. The sodium is an element while the two substances are
compounds. The constituent elements of monosodium glutamate are sodium,
carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen while iodized salt are iodine and chloride.

Let Us Try

Hurray! Let’s Read the paragraph and identify the correct words that fit in the
given sentences inside the box.

Compounds and elements are all around us. (1)______are made up of the
same type of atom or atoms. They are the most basic form of matter and cannot be
broken down into its constituent parts. Each element is entirely made up of (2)
____atoms.

Each element is distinct, with no two having the same set of (3)______Some are in
the same state as others, yet they have different (4)______characteristics. Some
elements, such as iron, gold, and silver, are_____ (5) . Nitrogen, Oxygen, and
Hydrogen are among the _____(6) .Boron, Silicon, and Germanium are examples of
______(7) elements.

(8) _________ are combination of (9)__________ or (10)____________ elements

like water which is a combination of Hydrogen and Oxygen; salt which is made
up of sodium and chlorine; and rusts formed when an iron reacts with oxygen.

Compounds are generated when two elements are joined and broken down into their
(11)_______by a (12)_________ process. It has characteristics that are distinct from
the characteristics of the elements that make it up.

Let Us Do

Let us have another activity to develop your skill on identifying compounds

and its constituent elements in food label. Here you go!

Activity 1
Let’s Hunt Elements and Compounds!

Directions: Refer to the labels of cookies products below.

INGREDIENTS: WATER, MILK POWDERS (SKIMMED

MILK POWDER, BUTTERMILK POWDER AND LACTOSE),
VEGETABLE OIL (MAY CONTAIN ONE OR MORE OF THE
FOLLOWING: COCONUT OIL AND CORN OIL), FLAVORS,
STABILIZERS (SODIUM PHOSPHATE, CARRAGEENAN),
IODIZED SALT, FLAVOR ENHANCER (MONOSODIUM
GLUTAMATE), EMULSIFIERS (LECITHIN, GLYCERYL
MONOSTEARATE), ARTIFICIAL COLOR (CARAMEL IV-
SULFITE AMMONIA CARAMEL)

List the compounds and constituent elements listed on the product label in
Table 1. You may need to look at the constituent components in such instances
because the compound name may not reveal them (e.g., Lactose, oil).

Table 1. Compounds and their constituent elements written in the food labels.

Activity 2
Search the Constituent Elements!
Look for any food product labels and bring them with you. In the box, paste
the label of the food product you want to use. Choose three compounds from the list
and identify the constituent elements.
