ROUND 7
ARJUN REDDY GONE ROGUE

Fortis Healthcare is an Indian multinational chain of private hospitals

headquartered in India. The Healthcare organization is one of the largest in the
nation with 36 Healthcare facilities, 4,000 Operational beds, and roughly 400
Diagnostic centers spread all across the nation.

The medical institution has had an unblemished and spotless record with respect
to medical negligence cases with the exception of a few.

However, a short while ago, one such case gained notable traction wherein P.
Poonkodi filed a petition to the Madras High Court alleging that her daughter,
Kanimozhi, passed away owing to medical negligence by Fortis Healthcare.

Kanimozhi was pregnant with her 3rd child and she underwent regular medical
check-ups. Following a few months, Kanimozhi was admitted to Fortis Healthcare
where she delivered a baby boy on June 8th, 2022, via Caesarean Section [C-
Section]. On the very same day, Kanimozhi underwent a family planning operation.

The petitioner, P. Poonkodi, stated that Kanimozhi was moved from the ICU to the
General ward on the 11th of June. Following this, she was moved to another
General ward on the 14th of June. On a subsequent day, the petitioner’s daughter
was given an injection after which both her daughter as well as the newborn baby
seemed to be healthy.  Under these circumstances, on the 16th of June, P.
Poonkodi claimed, a Trainee doctor gave Kanimozhi an injection without
performing any tests to see whether she was fit to take medication. Soon after the
injection was given, Kanimozhi’s mother claimed that Kanimozhi complained of
severe abdomen pain.
Following this event, Kanimozhi’s health progressively deteriorated. When
Kanimozhi’s mother inquired about her health, they said that she was merely given
a sleeping dose. However, to her shock, her daughter, Kanimozhi passed away on
the 21st of June.

When P. Poonkodi inquired the doctors as to why this fatal incident had occurred,
none of them provided any valid reasons. Instead, they simply urged her to receive
her daughter’s body. However, P. Poonkodi was desperately seeking the ones who
were accountable and therefore refused to receive her daughter’s body unless
someone explained to her why Kanimozhi had suddenly passed away. In response
to this, the doctors at Fortis Healthcare pressured her further to receive
Kanimozhi’s body. In addition to this, P. Poonkodi claimed that the medical
institution refused to perform an autopsy on her daughter and forced Kanimozhi’s
family members to bury the body.
