§ Explain the evolving concept of life based on

§ Describe classic experiments that model conditions

which may have enabled the first forms to evolve
§ Describe how unifying themes (e.g.,structure and
function, evolution, and ecosystems) in the study of
life show the connections among living things and
how they interact with each other and with their
environment
QUARTER 2 - LESSON 1
§The term
BIOLOGY was
derived from
BIO/BIOS
(referring to life)
and LOGOS
(meaning study).
§Life on Earth is
believed to
have appeared
some 3.5 billion
years ago.
§Microfossils are
fossils that contain the
remains of tiny plants
and animals. They are
very small and can be
measured in
millimeters, and some
could only be
identified under a
microscope.
§Cells are the
basic
building
blocks of all
living things.
§Prokaryotic cells are
cells without a
nucleus. The DNA in
prokaryotic cells is
in the cytoplasm
rather than enclosed
within a nuclear
membrane.
§ Eukaryotic cells are cells that
contain a nucleus. A typical
eukaryotic cell is shown in
Figurebelow. Eukaryotic cells
are usually larger than
prokaryotic cells, and they
are found mainly in
multicellular organisms.
Organisms with eukaryotic
cells are called eukaryotes,
and they range from fungi to
people.
§ 1. Response to Stimuli
§ 2. Metabolism
§ 3. Reproduction
§ 4. Growth and Development
§ 5. Homeostasis
§ 6. Adaptation
§ 7. Organization
§is the ability of
living things to
react to the factors
of the environment
such as life,
temperature,
pressure, chemical
and gravity.
§refers to the sum
total of the
chemical
reactions taking
place in an
organisms.
§is the ability of
living things to
produce new
individuals
closely
resembling them.
§means have a
capacity to grow
and to develop.
They either grow
new parts or
increase size
§ is maintaining a specific
internal environment.
Organisms maintain the
righ pH, temperature and
electrolyte concentration
among others to survive.
Not being able to regulate
the internal environment
would lead to death.
§is one of the
organisms means to
survive. Living
organisms over the
course of time have
adapted to various
changing
environmental
conditions
§ Living organism is composed
of cells which are also
composed of organelles and
their organelles such as the
cell membranes again
composed of
macromolecules and these
macromolecules such as fats
is compose of atoms such as
carbon, hydrogen and other.
§ is a hypothetical
condition of the Earth’s
atmosphere before the
emergence of life. it is
a chemical
environment in which
the first biological
molecules were
formed under natural
forces.
§emphasizes that
the source of all
creations is God
and with Him
nothing
impossible.
§ put a piece of snake meat, a fish, and a slice of veal in flasks,
covered these with Muslim cloth, and waited to see if
maggots would develop into meat. That maggots grew only
if the flies laid on their eggs on it.
§observed that meat juices were boiled for
three-quarters of an hour and then sealed,
no life developed.
§ devised a culture flask which admitted through a
curved tube any bacteria contained in the air and
settled on their own weight in the curve of tube. no
life appeared in the flask.
§When the egg and the
sperm cell unite, they
form a zygote. This
zygote would then
develop into organism.
Microorganisms like
bacteria can give rise
to many more bacteria.
§Everythin in the
universe is composed
of matter with soul
means life. There are
three kinds of souls -
vegetative, animals
and rational soul.
§This theory contends that ice may have
protected the compounds, allowing them to
interact and, thereby, creating life.
§ It has been proven that
electricity can produce simple
sugars and amino acid from
simple elements in the
atmosphere. This leads to the
theory that lightning may have
been responsible for the
origins of life, primarily by
striking through rich volcanic
clouds
§ is the proposal that life on Earth began from rocks, and
other debris from impacts, in the form of highly resistant
spores (cosmozoa) such as meteorite.
§ Ribonucleic acid (RNA)
has a role in the expression
of genes. To put it simple the
DNA unzips, revealing the
necessary gene that is
being called for by the body,
then RNA transcribed from
single nucleotides, copying
the revealed segment for
gene expression.
§suggests that the
primordial soup
simply continued to
react with itself over
time, producing more
and more complex
molecules, eventually
yielding life.
§suggests that clay
may have served as
an area of
concentrated
chemical activity,
providing a breeding
ground for DNA and
other components.
§contain vast and
diverse ecosystems.
The nutrient-rich
environment filled
with reactive gases
and catalysts,
creates a habitat
teeming with life.
§ Pick one theory of life and create a visual representation on
a bond paper. At the bottom of your drawing write an
explanation of the theory in your own words. Please see the
rubric below, as basis of grade for your work. (45 pts)
