Analysis of Single Stage transistor amplifier circuit using h-parameters:
Analysis of BJT amplifier means, calculation of performance parameters such as i/p
impedance, o/p impedance, voltage gain, current gain and power gain, using h-parameter
model (i.e. exact hybrid model). Before an amplifier to be employed in any real time
application, it is essential to its performance parameters to ensure its suitability w.r.t.
requirements of applications.

Guidelines for analysis of BJT amplifiers:

 Draw the amplifier circuit for which analysis is to be carried out.

 Obtain an a.c. equivalent circuit for the given amplifier circuit by following:
o Set DC sources to be zero by following:
 Short the terminals  for DC voltage source
 Open the terminals  for DC current source

o Short the coupling and by-pass capacitors

 Replace the active device (i.e. BJT) by hybrid model.

A two port active device (i.e. generalized BJT basic amplifier circuit) is shown below.

CDT3 - LECTURE SUMMARY

Generalized transistor amplifier circuit means

 Transistor will be in any one of 3 configurations (i.e. connection not specified).
 Circuit is valid for any type of load (i.e. pure resistance, impedance or any
transistor)
 Derived expressions (for performance parameters) are valid for all 3 configurations.
( hybrid model is derived independent of external circuit)

In above Fig.
 Only transistor is present, without biasing and stabilization resistors.
 a.c. voltage source ( ) is connected across input terminals (1,1’).

 Load ( ) is connected across output terminals (2,2’).

To analyze the transistor, replace it with its exact hybrid model as shown below.

By doing analysis (using exact hybrid model) of a given transistor circuit, following
performance parameters can be find as follows:

 Current Gain  Input impedance  Overall Current Gain
