Coefficient:
A numerical or constant quantity placed before and multiplying the variable in an algebraic expression.
Example: 4 in 4x
Like terms:
Like terms are terms that have the same variables and powers. The coefficients do not need to match.
Example: 7x, x and –2x are like term because the variables are all x.
Unlike terms:
If they are not like terms, they are called "Unlike Terms":
Example: 2x, 2x2, 2y, 2xy
These are all Unlike Terms because the variables and/or their exponents are different:
Equivalent Expressions:
Equivalent expressions are expressions that work the same even though they look different. If two
algebraic expressions are equivalent, then the two expressions have the same value when we plug in the
same value(s) for the variable(s).
Example: 3(x + 2) and 3x + 6
EXPLORE
In this activity you will be exposed to a slightly different technique for expanding
polynomials using FOIL. Play with the app - change the sliders and click the boxes - see
what happens.
