Challenges and Future Trends
Technical Challenges:
Technical challenges are problems that can be resolved using available
knowledge and expertise. They're often easy to identify and define, and it's
pretty clear-cut as to the solution that must take place. People within the
organization are often relieved that a technical solution is about to be put in
place.
The technical challenges that Web developers encounter when creating
accessible Web sites are numerous and change constantly as technologies
evolve. Many resources are available, though, through which Web developers
may learn more about, and engage in discussion about, the particular
challenges they may be encountering.

JavaScript support in screen readers is incomplete, rendering many
applications unusable. Dynamic data and interface changes are not
registered by screen readers.
Maps Link
Maps should be made useful for visually impaired people by separating the
text-based map data from the visual design.
IoT (Internet of Things) is a relatively new concept for companies of all
industries. IoT software integrates with critical business systems (e.g.,
ordering systems, robotics, scheduling, and more) to enhance the execution of
related tasks. The main idea is to reduce operational costs while collecting
and analyzing data so that processes can be optimized and goals can be
achieved. All too often, what starts out as a simple task evolves into a number
of challenges that must be overcome to reach the desired result.
IOT SOFTWARE IMPLEMENTATION CHALLENGES
About 60% of enterprises are already implementing IoT, but only 30% are
ready to say they’ve done so successfully. Most business executives are not
yet able to appreciate the value of implementing IoT software because its
benefits don’t begin to bear fruit for some time after implementation. By
focusing on reducing operating costs, companies often miss out on IoT’s
ability to solve consumer problems. And while IoT software impacts efficiency,
customer satisfaction and productivity in the long run, the gap between
understanding why to use IoT and the real value of putting its innovation into
practice is a common reason for enterprises being slow-adopters.
1. Compatibility of Various IoT Systems A main issue enterprises
encounter is when they attempt to integrate the operations of their existing
equipment with an entire system of embedded IoT sensors. The process of
linking and debugging systems from different manufacturers in order to
achieve a working interface can be both long and expensive. The process of
integrating IoT software with older, existing systems to obtain reliable and
necessary information is sure to encounter many software conflicts along the
way.
Installing external sensors on devices may be a temporary solution, however,
here the difficulty lies in the need to determine which particular sensor
functions are the priority and how to use them.
2. Authentication and Identification Issues in IoT : Today, the number of
devices connected online amounts to tens of billions. Among the challenges of
IoT is the precise and secure connection of each of them, which raises huge
security concerns for enterprises across the U.S. However, due to the high
complexity of this task, many companies worry about the effectiveness of
their devices along with their existing systems. To connect all these IoT
devices to a single platform, an entirely new system architecture is required to
be responsible for authentication and identification.
3. Integration of IoT Points with IoT Software : The successful
implementation of an IoT software depends entirely on its integration with
existing systems. Integrations that fall short on delivering what was expected
or require complicated training to learn how to use will lead to negative
outcomes: reduced productivity, poor customer service, failure to achieve
KPIs, etc.
That is why the process of integration is such a critical component in an IoT
project. Unfortunately, the difficulty lies in the need to connect a large
number of sensors to the platform.
4. IoT Data Storage Challenge : Organizations use IoT devices to collect
real-time and continuous data that will help them make better business
decisions and increase customer satisfaction. But collected data needs to be
processed and transferred in an appropriate format to store on storage
systems – which is prompting organizations to rethink their data storage
infrastructures. An enterprise has to store data generated from the Internet of
Things, and this data is growing exponentially. Most IoT data (structured or
unstructured) performs analytical functions to generate insights. The
analyzed results have to be pushed back to a central terminal. This prompts a
demand for high-capacity and high-speed storage, as well as advanced
memory processing technologies.
5. Connectivity and Power Management IoT Challenges : With a growing
number of devices comes growing power management requirements. Some
IoT devices, like printers, can be placed in accessible locations and draw on
AC power. Other devices, however, are wireless and can be placed in remote
areas where they only have to rely on battery power. Although storage
technologies continue to improve, battery life remains limited and poses a
perennial challenge for IoT networks. Enterprises must constantly track when
an IoT device’s battery needs to be recharged or replaced. Thus, finding
devices that conserve power when not in use is key to efficient power
management. Although some devices can be powered via a LAN cable, this
method is only suitable for devices that require minimal power. Correct power
distribution is another factor. This ensures that as many devices as possible
will have access to a network, instead of working autonomously from
batteries. If a device is stationed in a difficult place to access, battery
replacements can be extremely problematic.
To obtain reliable and timely information from IoT sensors, a stable and high-
speed internet connection is required. This is especially critical for companies
involved in all types of transportation and delivery. Nevertheless, any remote
operations will require additional equipment on the premises of warehouses
to improve the quality of signals collected by sensors and transmitted across
networks via routers or LAN, MAN, and WAN connections. Companies will
also be responsible for establishing and maintaining high-speed connections
between these networks, as well as managing the growing number of devices
being connected to them.
6. Unstructured Data Processing : The introduction of countless additional
sensors means processing enormous volumes of unstructured information. In
order to organize, analyze and filter out the most useful data, IoT software
needs to be effectively configured and deployed. Moreover, unstructured data
is difficult to store and use for future analysis.
The combination of IoT and Big Data temporarily solves this problem by
speeding up the analytical process. However, Big Data itself is also massive,
which adds challenges to IoT software development. The need for integrating
IoT solutions with Big Data tools is a long process being undertaken by some
of the biggest names in tech.
7. Incorrect Data Capture Difficulties : If we were to assume a situation
where all previous technological challenges of IoT had been resolved and a
stable system had been brought to market, incorrect data collection would
still plague the process. This is because systems record absolutely everything:
any anomalies, unwanted incidents or failures of an IoT software. The
inclusion of such information in analytical data can adversely affect decision-
making, which subsequently affects consumers and the company collecting
it.
8. IoT Data Analytics Challenges : The real value of an IoT solution is in
generating effective insights obtained from the collected IoT data. This
requires a high-performance analytical platform with tools capable of
processing huge amounts of data. Moreover, the implementation of IoT
software introduces new obstacles such as data volumes increasing to
astronomical levels, causing the need for IoT analytics to diverge further from
traditional analytics.
The real-time nature of IoT data forces analytics to happen in real-time for
companies to benefit from this type of data collection. Time series data is
another issue that refers to any data that has a timestamp. A company’s IoT
infrastructure must be capable of collecting, storing and analyzing huge
volumes of time series data. The challenge here is that most conventional
databases are not equipped to handle this type of data.
9. Data Security Issues : With the increasing number of cyberattacks, more
and more concerns are being raised around the issue of IoT security.
According to Microsoft research, about 25% of IoT devices will be susceptible
to attacks by hackers in the coming years. Unfortunately, even large
corporations are vulnerable to data leakage. However, hacking can occur both
from the side of the corporation as well as from the side of the consumer. The
need for solutions that provide enhanced security on both ends is the
responsibility of IoT software companies. Thus they must take into account
all possible angles of attack, that includes protecting users from themselves.
This begins with simple procedures such as prompting a user to change their
default password.
Among the challenges of implementing IoT solutions, bringing value to
consumers ranks highest. Companies striving to get the most from IoT
technology must clearly define what value they intend to receive. Due to an
incorrectly thought-out strategy affecting customer satisfaction, an IoT value
proposition should take into account not only the business and operational
value of a product or service but also its impact on the customer. For
example, deciding to replace live operators with IoT innovations, is a serious
step. Before doing so, it is essential that a company focuses on how the user
experience will change. And make changes to guarantee that high-quality
assistance persists. The most common mistakes are made usually occur
within the implementation of ill-conceived UX solutions, weak strategies, and
weak transitional processes. That is why a holistic UX approach focused on
improving comfort and value for the consumer is a must. Therefore, most
enterprises turn to professional companies for consultation in the
development of full-cycle IoT solutions, consisting of sensors, a network, and
software. However, optimizing and improving an existing system also often
requires outside help.
Standardization:
Smart objects produce large volumes of data. This data needs to be
managed, processed, transferred and stored securely. Standardization is key
to achieving universally accepted specifications and protocols for
true interoperability between devices and applications.
The use of standards:
ensures interoperable and cost-effective solutions
opens up opportunities in new areas
allows the market to reach its full potential
The more things are connected, the greater the security risk. So, security
standards are also needed to protect the individuals, businesses and
governments which will use the IoT.
The number of connected devices in the Internet of Things is growing very
fast (26 billion end 2020, 900 million five years ago). The IoT is having
a transformative influence on the way we live and work in domains
including connected vehicles, eHealth, home automation and energy
management, public safety and industrial process control, and smart cities.
OUR ROLE & ACTIVITIES
The main ETSI IoT standardization activities are conducted at radio
layer in 3GPP (LTE-M, NB-IoT and EC-GSM-IoT) and at service
layer in oneM2M. A wide range of technologies work together to connect
things in the Internet of Things (IoT). ETSI is involved in standardizing many
of these technologies:
Smart Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications
ETSI is one of the founding partners in oneM2M, the global standards
initiative that covers requirements, architecture, Application Programming
Interface (API) specifications, security solutions and interoperability for M2M
and IoT technologies.
IoT Semantic Interoperability
SAREF is our Smart Applications REFerence ontology that allows connected
devices to exchange semantic information in many applications’ domains.
Context Information Management (NGSI-LD)
ETSI ISG CIM specifies protocols (NGSI-LD API) running ‘on top’ of IoT
platforms and allowing exchange of data together with its context, this
includes what is described by the data, what was measured, when, where,
by what, the time of validity, ownership, and others. This is dramatically
extending the interoperability of applications, helping smart cities (and other
areas such as Smart Agriculture and Smart Manufacturing) to integrate
their existing services and enable new third-party services.

There has been a lot of noise about the Internet of Things these days. It’s
huge impact on almost everything that we do just can’t be ignored. Before we
begin, let me give you a brief about this booming technology that has taken
over the world. IoT is a system connecting any device to the Internet and to
other connected devices. It is a giant network of connected things and people
that allows sharing of data within the network.
The Internet of Things is not a concept; it is a network, the true
technology-enabled Network of all networks, said EdewedeOriwoh.
The Internet of Things is transforming the everyday physical objects
that will enrich our lives. From refrigerators to parking spaces to houses,
the Internet of Things is bringing more things into the digital fold every day,
which will likely make the Internet of Things a multi-trillion dollar industry
in the near future, stated a report by PricewaterhouseCoopers.

technologies is to extract processable information from this data. This helps
in better decision-making to make fruitful business moves.
Among all the emerging IoT trends in 2020, both AI and Big Data clearly run
the show. AI and Big Data techniques are needed to access data in real-time.
This has helped to improve the efficiency of processes within business thus
offering an enhanced decisive power to strategize a plan of action. The
growing prominence of AI and Big Data using IoT can best be depicted by
these lines quoted by Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft.
If you invent a breakthrough in Artificial Intelligence, so machines can
learn, that is worth 10 Microsofts.
The latest marketing report from Frost & Sullivan Technology Advancements
Shaping Big Data Progress suggests that this deadly combination of IoT, Big
Data and AI could do wonders in the coming days by developing highly
productive applications. In fact, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that viewing any
of these in isolation anymore is very difficult. Undoubtedly, the option to hire
app developer for building custom-tailored applications using these advanced
technologies would surely prove to a profitable deal.
Blockchain for IoT Security
What is Blockchain Technology? Is it the new internet? Blockchain is a
technology using which an individual or a company can make instant
transactions on a network without the need of any middlemen. This is just
like how a financial bank works. The transactions made on blockchain are
completely secured. The strong computer codes used in Blockchain make
sure that no record of the transaction can be altered.
Blockchain technology has been used by many financial & governmental
institutions, entrepreneurs, consumers, and industrialists. This is one of the
most popular IoT trends that will bring great differences in the field of
technology and foster its advanced application to build technical devices.
Software-As-a-Service becomes the Norm
If we talk about the IoT app trends, Software- As-a-Service is now considered
to be a hot topic for discussion. SaaS is a service model. In this model, the
service provider hosts the desired application and makes it available to the
customers for use over the Internet. This helps organizations in outsourcing
IT software applications. IoT trends like these render a marketing platform to
companies for promoting their product. That’s why Stewart Butterfield, the
Co-Founder of Slack, a cloud-based instant messaging platform said,
Every customer interaction is a marketing opportunity. If you go above
and beyond the customer service side, people are much more likely to
recommend you.
With less cost being invested, SaaS has become the preferred choice for the
IT gaming sector. The advent of SaaS has made a great contribution to the
field of technology. This IoT trend popping up in the market will soon make
the lives of the people better than ever before.
Creation of Unified Framework for Integration
Software development is an art and developers come up with unique
solutions using their creativity. To make any project a success, it is
important that the right project management skills, systematic approach,
and a great methodology is implemented. For this, a common shared
platform to strategize plans and activities is required by the companies.
The lack of a unified IoT framework is a major challenge faced by industries
these days. has been facing for a long time. Many companies do not have a
shared central platform. The creation of a unified framework for integration
for keeping enterprises safe and secure is the only solution.
Smart Home Devices will Soar in Popularity
The growing charm of smart home devices using IoT is difficult to resist even
by those who first discarded the technology of smart homes and later
accepted them as a blessing. These devices will soon become very popular in
2020 and will dominate the other upcoming IoT trends in 2020.
Gradually, with the application of advanced technologies, these smart
devices will become more innovative and offer great assistance to users.
Smart home devices do not only provide you with great comfort but also
render home security and safety of your family.
Smart Home devices
Edge Computing will take Prominence over Cloud Computing
Edge Computing will see greater adoption by the consumers in the year
2020. Industries will be seen choosing it too. Earlier, IoT devices were based
on the cloud to store the data. But now, instead of sending the whole data
from the IoT device to the cloud, the data is first transferred to a local device
that is located closer to the IoT device or at the edge of the network.
Later, after sorting and calculating the data, the local storage devices send a
part of the data to the cloud. This helps to reduce the traffic to the network.
This process which is known as “Edge Computing” has a number of benefits
and advantages. It helps to manage a large amount of data that each device
sends.
IoT Security will be a bigger Priority
With more and more devices connecting to the internet of things, large
volumes of information can be observed being transferred across multiple
networks. As the network expands, more information is at risk. So, it’s very
important that the increased use of IoT is accompanied by a robust IoT
security thus preventing data from thefts and malicious attacks. This will
prove to be an important trend among all other upcoming IoT trends in 2020.
This is all we can expect.
In the coming years, IoT security will be a bigger priority in order to make IoT
based mobile app development safer and secure. Data flowing in the cloud is
at more risk. IoT devices till now that have not been equipped with security
features. But things will surely change, you can expect a better scenario in
the next year with the development of robust IoT devices with improved
security. Machine learning, AI and, big data techniques will help identify and
reduce risks thus rendering data security and protection.
Better Data Analytics
In the next few years, the upcoming IoT app trends will surely surprise you
with their offerings. These trends will not only provide effective processes to
execute tasks but also help in making our lives easier and more comfortable.
Soon, we can witness significant ways by which the world and IoT will
combine to become a decision-making assistant for all individuals and
businesses. Without data analytics, it would be difficult for companies to
execute a business process as quoted by Geoffrey Moore, an author, and
consultant in these words,
Without data analytics, companies are blind and deaf, wandering out
onto the web just like a deer on a freeway.
With the use of AI and Big Data techniques, these IoT trends popping up in
the near future will foster improved decision making among market
strategists and industry experts. Better data analytics help to extract
meaningful and valuable insights. Later, this information is analyzed and
processed for creating a systematic approach to make effective business
moves.
Personalization of the Retail Experience
IoT app trends of the following years will make retail supply chain
management even more efficient than ever before. It will simplify the
shopping experience making it easier for the users to make online purchases.
IoT will provide a personalized retail experience to the customers and help in
boosting your commercial presence on the web. App development is another
way to boost your online presence. You can hire developer to create
innovative apps for your business needs.
With the help of sensors and other smart beacon techniques, you can expect
various features that can make your shopping a cakewalk. IoT will introduce
the world to a new era of shopping that will attract customers from all
categories and offer an alluring experience to buy whatever you desire.
