BONDING Continued

There are 3 types of Bonding:

1) Ionic or Electrovalent Bonding
2) Covalent Bonding (Simple covalent bonding OR Giant covalent bonding)
3) Metallic Bonding

Comparison of the properties between Ionic and Simple Covalent Compounds

GIANT COVALENT COMPOUND: Graphite

USES OF GRAPHITE:

1) In pencil points

2) To make Electrodes as Graphite conducts electricity

3) to make lubricants as the layers in Graphite slip and slide over each other making it slippery
GIANT COVALENT COMPOUND: Diamond

Uses of Diamond
1) For jewellery
2) In drill bits to drill through very hard objects
3) Used to cut metals and glass as diamond is the HARDEST non-metal on Earth
IONIC BONDING OR GIANT IONIC CUBIC LATTICE OF SODIUM CHLORIDE, NaCl

USES OF SODIUM CHLORIDE:

1) used as table salt to cook food, provide flavour
2) used to preserve meat and vegetables
3) is electrolysed to provide sodium and chlorine gas in the industry
