WORKSHEET 4 – FIRST QUARTER

Topic: ARITHMETIC SEQUENCE

MELC: Illustrates an arithmetic sequence.

Arithmetic Sequence – is a sequence such that the
Remember:
difference between consecutive terms is constant.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES:
* Determine whether the given sequence or situation illustrates an arithmetic sequence.

1.) 1, 3, 5, 7, 10, ………

Answer: Not arithmetic! Even though the first four terms have a common difference, the fifth term
doesn’t satisfy the definition of an arithmetic sequence. In order to make the sequence arithmetic we can
change the fifth term to 9.

2.) 11, 1, – 9, – 19, – 29, ………

Answer: Arithmetic! The sequence has a common difference of – 10.

3.) In the popular Christmas song “Twelve Days of Christmas” the manner of receiving gifts from her true
love.
Answer: Arithmetic! A partridge in a pear tree, two turtle doves, three French hens, etc.. The sequence
has a common difference of 1.

TRY IT YOURSELF!!!
* For each item, determine whether the given sequence or situation illustrates an arithmetic sequence. If
YES, write the common difference; otherwise state the reason why it is not arithmetic. God bless! (“,)

not satisfy the definition an arithmetic sequence.

3.) 0.7, 0.07, 0.007, 0.0007, ……… remaining given terms which is x+2y.
Answer: Not arithmetic because the terms do not have a common
difference. Additionally, the sequence shares a ratio of 7.) A stack of PVC pipes has 20 pipes on the

8.) Russel saved Php 5 on the first day. On the
next days he challenged himself to save twice
as much as he had for the succeeding days.
Answer: Not arithmetic, because the succeeding terms
starting from 5 are to be multiplied by 2,
therefore, no common difference can be
obtained.
