Quarter 1 – Week 7
Lesson: The Concepts of Community and Environmental
Health and Community Health Problems.

Lesson: “Environmental Problems in the Philippines and Effects of

Environmental Problems”
Objective/s:
1. Define and explain the concept of community and environmental
health.
2. Describe the characteristics of a healthy community and a healthy
life.
3. Explain the cause and effect of perennial community health problems.
4. Analyze the bad effects of environmental problems on people’s health.

Concept/s: The WHO defines community health as:

environmental, social, and economic resources to sustain
emotional and physical well-being among people in ways that
advance their aspirations and satisfy their needs in their unique
environment. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Community_health#:~:text=The%20WHO%20defines%20community

The Concepts of Community and Environmental Health

According to the World Health Organization, Health is a state of
complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not just the absence of
disease or infirmity. It leads to the ability to lead a socially and economically
productive life.”

Community is defined as a sociological group in a large place sharing one

environment. It therefore includes the individual and the family.

Community Health is defined as the art and science of maintaining,
protecting, and improving the health of all the members of the community
through organized and sustained community efforts.
Environmental Health comprises those aspects of human health that are
determined by physical, chemical, biological, social, and psychosocial
factors in the surrounding environment.

Community health problems are common nowadays with the rise in
modern technology; people neglect the importance of the basic needs for
safety. A safe environment will ensure quality of life that will lead to more
productive citizen of the country. This lesson will help you understand that

The government has created an office that would oversee the planning and
implementing rules and regulations to address the above-mentioned
community health problems. One of its programs is the Solid Waste
Management Program that helps lessen the amount of refuse in our country.
Let’s take a deeper look at its focus of concern.
Refuse Materials are the dump, food waste, or discarded materials.
There are many ways to do Solid Waste Management. A highly
recommended formula is to adopt the 3Rs of Ecological Waste Management:
REDUCE, REUSE, AND RECYCLE According to RA No. 9003, there are
many ways to do Solid Waste Management. A highly recommended formula
is to adopt the 3Rs of Ecological Waste Management: REDUCE, REUSE,
AND RECYCLE.
In addition, let us refrain from doing what has been prohibited under the
law.
These include:
● littering, throwing, dumping of waste materials in public places like
roads, sidewalks, canals, esteros, parks and establishments;
● open burning of solid waste;
● allowing the collection of non-segregated or unsorted waste;
● squatting in open dumps and landfills;
● open dumping or burying of biodegradable and non-biodegradable
materials in flood-prone areas;
● unauthorized removal of recyclable materials intended for collection
by authorized persons;
● mixing of source-separated recyclable materials with other solid
wastes in any vehicle, box, container or receptacle used in solid waste
collection or disposal;

packaging materials;
● establishment or operation of open dumps; and
● importation of consumer products packaged in non-environmentally
acceptable materials.

ACTIVITY NO.2

This activity will ask you to sketch your understanding on how a

healthy environment positively impacts the health of people and
communities (less disease, less health care cost, etc.) by spreading
awareness about Ecological Waste Management to eradicate the community
health problems.

Directions: Sketch a poster on how a healthy environment positively

impacts the health of people and communities (less disease, less
health care cost, etc.) using the 3R’s of Ecological Waste
Management- Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. Use short bond paper
and art materials for this activity.

Environmental Problems in the Philippines

Natural Resources and Biodiversity explain why the Philippines is a
rich country. Putting our home into the rare list of nations which have both

animal species inhabited this area. However, despite—or perhaps because of
— their richness and massive importance to the environment and humans
as well, the forests face continuing destruction and possible extinction.
This lesson will make you aware of the most pressing problems of the
environment today.

ACTIVITY NO.3

Directions: Research popular or headline environmental problem in the

Philippines and make a write-up or report about it by
answering the guide questions.
Guide Questions:
● What environmental problem is featured in the write-up or report?
● Where and when did it happen?
● What do you think are the causes of that environmental problem?
● Who are the casualties of that environmental problem?

EFFECTS OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS
Environmental issues created due to human activities and cause
harm to the environment. Defined as problems with the planet's systems
(air, water, soil, etc.) that has developed as a result of human interference or
mistreatment of the planet.
Environmental Problems EFFECTS

Flash Floods causes of diseases such as cholera and other
water borne diseases, loss of life,

Soil Erosion unproductive use of farmland, difficulty in
raising of livestock, silting of artificial lakes,
loss of soil and vegetation which causes
climate changes.
Oil Spill suffocation of marine mammals, and death of
trees from oil in roots
Coral Reef Degradation loss of edible reef fish, reduction of species
diversity and richness, and alteration in the
size structure of target species
Illegal Mining water poisoning of all the living things in it,
destruction of beautiful coral reefs,
and .barrenness of land

ACTIVITY NO.4

Directions: Analyze the picture carefully. Reflect on the environmental

problems that arise from those scenarios. Draw a human body on your
paper and write the effects in health of those environmental problems on its
different parts. Give a brief explanation to support your answers.
