📝 Language Arts

We are a class of proud writers! We have been focusing on realistic fiction story writing lately.
Our class loves to use their imaginations to create entertaining stories! We always start by
brainstorming creative problems and clever solutions for our stories. Our writing stamina has been
increasing during our writing blocks and the authors of 3F love sharing their amazing stories with
each other! Ask your child about the imaginative stories that they have written lately.

📚 Author Visit - Christy Jordan-Fenton

We had the special opportunity to meet a published author today! Her name is Christy
Jordan-Fenton and she has written several wonderful books. She read us her book “When I Was
Eight” and shared many other short stories and important messages with us.
📓 Math - Addition & Subtraction

In Math, we have continued to explore strategies to solve 2 digit and 3 digit addition and
subtraction equations. In Grade 3, multiple strategies are taught such as using a hundreds chart,
drawing visual base ten block models, and breaking numbers down into expanded form so students
can strengthen their number sense and find a strategy that works consistently for them. These
strategies help students to clearly see the place value of each number during the addition and
subtraction process. Providing an organized and visual structure while students are learning
multi-digit addition and subtraction with and without regrouping is essential in deepening their
understanding of numbers. We also practice using the traditional algorithm method once students
have learned the other strategies so they have a stronger understanding of what is actually
happening to the numbers as they are regrouped.

🛠️ Science - Building & Testing Designs

We have started our building and
testing designs unit in Science this
week. We will be exploring the
important work of engineers, safety
considerations, structures, strength,
and stability. Stay tuned for exciting
explorations and experiments in the
coming weeks!
💌 Valentine’s Day Information
We will be celebrating Valentine’s Day next week on Tuesday, February 14th! A class list of first
names was sent home a couple of weeks ago to assist your child in labeling cards if they would like
to. We have created mailboxes at school for our cards. On Valentine’s Day, students are encouraged
to wear red and pink.
Snacks and treats are also welcome for our class party potluck. There are currently no food
allergies in our class. If you plan on sending a treat or snack for the class, please email me and let
me know. If there are a lot of families wanting to send in treats or snacks, I may ask that some wait
for the next class celebration so food does not get wasted. Thank you in advance for your
contributions!
