METHOD STATEMENT - DR.

FIXIT PIDISEAL PS 41G

Sealing expansion joints for vertical application
Joint preparation:
 To Reduce the Large Joint size to 50 mm or desired width :-
 Hack the edges of the joints properly and reduce the joint width to desired size in mm using a
Polymer Modified Mortar. (Apply a polymer bond coat at the joints and repair using Polymer
Modified cement sand mortar admixed with Dr. Fixit Pidicrete URP 10% by weight of cement.
 Prepare the joints maintaining depth to width ratio as 1:2 or as recommended by the consultant.
Minimum width to depth ratio shall be maintained and in any case it shall not be less than 2
 For Tongue and Groove Joints, the depth to width ratio should be 1:1.
 Joint shall be prepared to have constant width throughout its length and same shall be profiled with
suitable cementitious material.
 Clean the surfaces removing all loose materials, dirt, rust, lacquers, grease, bitumen and its traces, etc.
complete. Joint should be cleaned mechanically like wire brushing, chiseling etc. It is also
recommended to use compressed air / vacuum cleaner to clean up the grooves and remove dirt or any
loose materials in the joints.
 Any unclean surfaces, traces of bitumen etc. Will prevent the proper adhesion of sealant.
 Insert back up material or filler board made from polystyrene to required depth.
 Insert polystyrene rod as a bond breaker over back up material.
 Use masking tape on the both edges of the joint to have proper finis.
Priming:
 Prime only on two sides of the properly prepared joint surface with PIDIPRIME A with a brush.
PIDIPRIME A is a single component primer suitable for both porous and non-porous surface. Allow the
primer to mature for minimum 30 minutes before application of sealant. (For delay of more than 90
minutes in applying the respective sealant, the joint should be recoated with the primer.)
Mixing:
 The accelerator / curing agent should be mixed thoroughly to a homogeneous and uniform mix.
 Then transfer the entire quantity of accelerator / curing agent to the base and mix thoroughly with a
slow speed electric mixer( 300 to 450 RPM) for approximately 5-6 min or until a homogeneous, uniform
grey colour material is obtained.
Part mixing should be avoided at site. Mix entire material at one time.
Application:
 Dr. Fixit Pidiseal PS 41G can be applied by spatula directly into the joint OR For a neat application the
material can be filled in a cartridge and fixed in the gun for application. The sealant is applied in the
joint with the help of the gun from top to bottom, ensuring the application is continuous and no air
pockets / air is entrapped.
 Apply sealant in the prepared joint after the primer coat has cured for minimum 30 minutes (Maximum
90 minutes, If sealant is not applied after 90 minutes apply one more coat of primer and follow the same
procedure ) and maintaining depth to width ratio of the joint as 1:2 (min) for a normal application. For
joints subjected to skew movements the same shall be maintained as 1:1
 Ensure that the groove is filled 1-2mm below the top surface to protect it from mechanical abrasion.
 The application should not be taken up in extreme weather conditions. (Below 5 Degrees and above
40 Degrees). The primer and Sealant application should not be done when the substrate is wet or moist.
 After the initial curing, if the cured sealant is found to have pin holes / blow holes, the same has to be
repaired at the locations. In case, large surface is found to have air entrapped and pin holes are
observed, the affected section needs to be cut, removed and re-done.
 The expansion joints which are exposed to mechanical / manual abuses must be protected with suitable
Membrane or Metal Plate fixed at one end, taking precaution to enable the joints to move freely and
meet the architectural requirements.
Theoretical Coverage:
Vol of sealant in ml
L=
W in mm X D in mm

Where L = Length of the joint in linear meter.

W = width of the joint in mm
D = depth of the joint in mm

Tooling & Finishing:

 Immediately after filling the joints, the sealant should be tooled either with a stainless steel or wooden
spatula. While tooling, the spatula should be wetted with 1-5 % of soap solution.
 During tooling ensure complete removal of air bubbles and to fill up all voids by the compacting action,
ensuring proper adhesion to the joint sides.
 Remove the masking tape immediately by pulling it outwardly after tooling is done Curing.
 Allow sealant to cure for minimum 7 days before carrying out any testing. Prevent the joints from water
after.
 Application at least for 24 hrs (best for 7 days).
Precautions & Limitations.
 Maximum width for application in a joint is 50 mm.
 Do not expose the sealant to high temperatures.
 Sealant will not adhere to substrates with contamination and traces of bitumen.
 Adhesion of the sealant must only be on two opposite joint faces.
 Do not carry out sealing operations during hot temperature conditions.
 Use of bitumen based board as a backup material should be avoided.
 Pouring Grade version must only be applied in horizontal joints. Application to be started only after 30
minutes of priming the substrate.
