This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 730497.
What is the importance of business models
Some critical challenges for NBS implementation

• Lack of evidence on functionality vs well known grey solutions

• Upfront investment vs longer term impacts →return of
investment
• Difficulties to find funding and financing, and attract investors
for NBS implementation
Business models to capture and communicate the
value
• Business model: describes the rationale of how an organization
creates, delivers, and captures value, in economic, social, cultural or
other contexts.

• Identifying the elements and actors required to deliver the value

delivered by NBS (natural assurance service)

• Organising the information in a visual way that allows understanding

and communication (to investors, implementors, citizens)

Value capturing and identification of business
models for NBS

• NAS canvas tool: based on

• business model canvas (Osterwalder and Pigneur, 2010)
• tailored to include the particularities of NBS: multiple values and beneficiaries
• NAIAD’s economic framework: Risk reduction value + value of co-benefits

• One step further: Quantifying the value and impacts of the NBS
implementation vs the costs → provide evidence for investors
2. SUPPLY 1. FLOW OF SERVICE 3. DEMAND
