o demonstrated knowledge on the type of logical reasoning based
on the relevance and truthfulness of ideas presented in the material
viewed; and
o expressed the importance in recognizing the relevance and
truthfulness of the ideas presented.

Lesson Overview
FAULTY LOGIC, UNSUPPORTED FACTS, AND EMOTIONAL APPEAL

Logic is a process of drawing conclusion. Often, writers and speakers,


whether intentionally or otherwise, misuse logic to arrive at the conclusion they
prefer. Knowing the logical aspect of a certain material will help one decides
what to believe or not.
Definition of Terms:
• LOGIC- is the use and study of valid reasoning.
• FAULTY- mistaken or misleading because of flaws.
• FACTS- something that has really occurred or is actually the case.
• APPEAL- the power of arousing a sympathetic response.

Let’s break it down the following terms:

➢ FAULTY LOGIC is an imperfect reason. Faulty- having faults or imperfect


while logic – reason or sound judgment. Therefore, It occurs when you use
words with connotations that make a false connection between a person
or an idea, whether it be positive or negative.

Examples of Faulty Logic

1. William Shakespeare is a wonderful writer because he writes so well.

Explanation: The italicized statement is basically the same as the


underlined statement.

2. I loved that movie of Daniel Padilla we saw last night. I am going to


rent all of his movies, and I am sure I’ll like all of them.

Explanation: It is an imperfect judgment (Faulty logic) to assume that you


will love all Daniel Padilla movies just because you loved one.

➢ UNSUPPORTED FACTS -not sustained or maintained by nonmaterial aid; not


held up or borne; not supported by written evidence.

Examples of Unsupported Facts

1. People who live in the North of Britain are friendlier than those who live
in the South.

Explanation: There is no evidence to back it up.

2. Nike shoes have been proven to support your leg muscles and make
you stronger.

Explanation: There is no evidence to prove this.

➢ An EMOTIONAL APPEAL –is a method of persuasion that designed to


create an emotional response. Emotional appeals persuade audiences
by arousing the emotions. They refer to the speaker or writer’s goal of
arousing the emotions of an audience to move them to act.

Examples of Emotional Appeal


1. A shampoo commercial shows a young lady still having a shiny and
straight hair after a whole walk in a hot weather.

Explanation: The commercial ad can make viewers happy, sad, etc.

2. A food chain ad shows a loving father waiting patiently in his for his
daughter to come.

Explanation: The advertiser wants to convince the viewers that eating in


the fast-food chain will make you happy and complete.

Directions: Identify whether the given statements are faulty logic, unsupported
facts and emotional appeal. Write FL if it is faulty logic, UF if it is unsupported
facts and EA if it is emotional appeal. Write your answers on the answer sheet.

the tagline). Tell what reasoning is used in the ad, then give a short explanation.
