(in the breast for some reason) with his serum. It is unclear
what the official result of this “inoculation” was, but the serum
didn’t work and undoubtedly many of the prostitutes con-
tracted gonorrhea from the shots. He was later sued by some
of his victims, who won their case against him.
The first effective treatment for syphilis was an arsenic-
based drug name Arsphenamine, also known as Salvarsan. The
drug was discovered in 1910 and made available in 1912, but
this arsenical compound came with many side effects. Good
treatment for venereal diseases didn’t become available until
the 1940s and penicillin.
