LETTER
Dear Parents,

Welcome to the first full set of reports from all subject in the RGSV IGCSE Programme for this academic
year.

The subject teacher who teaches your child has written this report, and all reports follow a similar pattern.
You should see a brief description of work covered so far, this year in the subject, and an analysis of the
level of attainment reached, with possible recommendations for advancement for the following year. There
will be an examination grade for all subjects that set an in-house examination in December, and a general
grade for the semester’s work: this latter grade will be completed of many different marks from the
semester, of which the examination grade is only a small part. Finally, there is a Learning Behaviour
Descriptor to show how your child is developing in approaches to their learning.

Reports issued at the end of the academic semester are an important guide to progress, and should be used as
the foundation for progress and improvement in the subsequent semester. They are also a record of your
child’s curriculum, which might be required by schools and institutes of further education at a later date.

TEACHER COMMENTS
TOPICS STUDIED: Year 10 Language students have focused on key skills needed to master IGCSE Paper 1.
Students have completed two units. The first focused on developing reading skills while the second focused on
understanding writing style. Through these two units, students have developed the necessary skills for papers 1
and 2. These skills include implicit vs. explicit meaning, analysis of the writer’s effect, articulation of
information, organization, development of vocabulary and grammar, and understanding of context.

Anh Ha VU has participated well in class this semester, although she is encouraged to speak out more in class
discussions. Her summative Paper 1 semester exam demonstrated excellent close reading skills with detailed
textual recall in her responses. She exhibited strong word choices throughout her responses. She has currently
been participating well in the active reading strategies for the Shakespeare and Writing Styles unit.

GEOGRAPHY

TEACHER COMMENTS
TOPICS STUDIED: The year began studying ‘rivers’, their landforms and how they change from source to
mouth. In addition to flood forecasting and management methods, pupils considered the pros and cons of living
near rivers. This has been followed by ‘weather, climate and vegetation’, which has included understanding
weather instruments, reading climate graphs and considering factors that influence climate. There has been a
focus on the tropical rainforest and deserts, their locations and the reasons for their existence. Pupils have also
studied the causes of hurricanes and will look to compare different responses in preparation.

Anh Ha VU (Ha Anh) has been a very inquisitive pupil this semester. She has shown herself to be highly self-
motivated and driven. Ha Anh is good at jumping ahead and moving her own learning forward. Ha Anh asks
excellent and challenging questions and provides high-level responses when questioned herself. During essay
writing practice, she has demonstrated strong writing skills. She is a great teacher of others and aims to go deeper
than the syllabus. She has shown open-mindedness to learn from others. She is a highly reflective learner who is
keen to improve and remedy weaknesses. Ha Anh is a highly organised, independent learner who always

completes classwork and homework to the very best of her ability.

To continue growing, Ha Anh should look to push herself to consider alternative perspectives to those of her own
beliefs. Ha Anh should attempt to imagine how new content could be turned into an exam-style question. I would
also like to see Ha Anh continue to mentor those around her. English is the community language at school and I
would like to take this opportunity to express that Ha Anh should use it at all times to foster an inclusive
environment for all pupils.

TEACHER COMMENTS
TOPICS STUDIED

The Year 10 Science class is studying the first year of a two-year course which follows the double-award
Cambridge IGCSE Co-ordinated Science syllabus. The syllabus ensures that learners better understand the
biological, physical and chemical world around them. The scientific method and scientific skills are developed,
and an interest and care for the environment is also nurtured. The course is taught by three teachers. This
semester we covered the topics of: measurements and units, electricity, the particulate nature of matter; atoms,
elements and compounds, stoichiometry, cells, diffusion, osmosis, biological molecules and animal nutrition.

Ms Sonali: Anh Ha VU (Ha Anh) is an intelligent and hardworking student. She actively contributes to class
discussions, giving answers and asking excellent questions that show a deeper understanding of the topic. She
works well whether independently or with others, and works safely during practicals. In the end of semester exam
Ha Anh did well in both the physics multiple choice questions and physics written section. This shows that she
revised early and effectively. She still needs to revise static electricity charging methods by completing more
written past paper questions on this topic.

Dr Andy: Ha Anh is a conscientious member of the class and exhibits an unparalleled effort and attainment when
in class. She is very able to understand new concepts and possesses an impressive aptitude for Chemistry. In
addition, she is pleasingly able to explain her ideas using the appropriate scientific language. Ha Anh has made
excellent progress in Chemistry this semester. In addition to the assigned home-learning activities, Ha should
possess a complete set of notes. By constantly reviewing the subject material, the knowledge can be consolidated,
resulting in improved exam scores. In order to improve, particular areas of study to focus on include ionic
bonding.

Mr Rich: Ha Anh is an outstanding student. She is always positive and enthusiastic in class, constantly
volunteering answers and asking intelligent questions to ensure she has fully understood the ideas covered. She is
also very quick to offer her help to other students. Her ability to apply her knowledge to unfamiliar situations is
superb and she frequently gives answers which go far beyond the level required at IGCSE. Her written work is
equally impressively detailed and knowledgeable. She now needs to try to pay a little more attention to the
number of marks on offer for a question to ensure she does not waste time in test situations putting too much
information into her answers when they are only worth one mark.

TEACHER COMMENTS
TOPICS STUDIED: This semester, the 10-1 group completed fourteen of the twenty four topics in our textbook
(although they were only tested on topics one through eleven in the end of semester exams): Reviewing number
concepts; Making sense of algebra; Lines, angles and shapes; Collecting, organising and displaying data;
Fractions and standard form; Equations and rearranging formulae; Perimeter, area and volume; Introduction to
Probability; Sequences and sets; Straight lines and quadratic equations; Pythagoras’ theorem and similar shapes;
Averages and measures of spread; Understanding measurement; Further solving of equations and inequalities.

Ha Anh VU is an exemplary student who actively contributes in lessons by asking questions and sharing her
knowledge in group discussions. Ha Anh needs to continue working at this level this year in order to achieve the
same level of success in mathematics. Ha Anh’s homework is completed to a very high standard and she shows
independent thinking in class by relating mathematical concepts to real life situations. In order to further
improve, she should continue doing exam practice at home and attempt to tackle more challenging mathematical
problems, in particular worded maths questions.

TEACHER COMMENTS
TOPICS STUDIED Students have explored how the visual arts are a form of communication that allows students
to convey ideas, feelings and concepts to an audience. This exploration began with ‘Still Life’, inspired by Paul
Cezanne and Van Gogh. Following the methods used by these great artists, students develop their own artworks.
In the second half of this semester, students have been developing their coursework for IGCSE. Students selected
their own theme, they started with observational drawings exploring different colour schemes and paper. They
have started to experiment with different mediums, and using aspects of this artist's research for inspiration, are
starting to use formal art elements.

Throughout the learning Anh Ha VU demonstrates sustained experimentation and manipulation of a range of
skills, techniques and processes, showing the ability to select and use materials appropriate to her intentions. In
all aspects of learning, Anh Ha shows an eagerness to learn and a strong desire to improve is clear to see. In
exploring her IGCSE coursework theme of human forms, Anh Ha VU has demonstrated a good application of
skills and techniques to create and present art. This semester Anh Ha is averaging A* based on summative
assessments for work submitted for the Coursework. In the semester art exam, Anh Ha developed artwork that

focused on the use of positive and negative space for the final resolved artwork for Coursework. This artwork
showcases everything Anh Ha has been learning about formal art elements. Anh Ha’s next step is to present a
personal and coherent response that realises intentions and demonstrates an understanding of the visual language
required for component 2 of this course.

TEACHER COMMENTS
TOPICS STUDIED: This semester was the first for students taking the two year IGCSE Business course. We
have covered eight chapters ranging from types of businesses to business objectives and stakeholders. We will
continue at a slightly slower pace entering semester two, entering the topics of recruitment and marketing.

Anh Ha VU (Ha Anh) is always pursuing knowledge, and has a critical mind which has guided her well. She has
no changed much since last year, and is just as reliable as ever. She has a great memory, but an even better knack
for understanding complex situations. I appreciate her directness, but also knowing when to be serious, or joke
around a bit. Including last year in Humanities, she has shown she can work with anyone, or alone. I have
nothing but positives to see about Ha Anh at this time.

Anh Ha VU is a very organised, independent learner who always completes classwork and homework to a very
high standard. She often makes herself available to make extended positive contributions to discussions. Her
writings provide a perceptive analysis of the content and the effects of the creator’s choices. She should challenge
herself more, especially regarding tasks that do not necessarily boost her academic results directly but rather
broaden her knowledge and experience in general.

ASSESSMENT EXPLANATION
HOW THE STUDENT AND THE WORK ARE ASSESSED
Cambridge IGCSE assessment takes place at the end of the course and can include written, oral, coursework and
practical assessment. This broadens opportunities for students to demonstrate their learning, particularly when
their first language is not English. In many subjects there is a choice between core and extended curricula,
making Cambridge IGCSE suitable for a wide range of abilities.

Grades are benchmarked using eight internationally recognised grades, A* to G. Cambridge IGCSE examination
sessions occur twice a year, in June and November. Results are issued in August and January.
