1. What is an Izod/Charpy Impact Test? For what purpose it will be used? (10
points)

 At the turn of the 20th century, Russell and Georges Charpy created the
Charpy impact test. Due to how simple it is to generate samples and get
data, it continues to be one of the most widely used impact testing
techniques. A weighted pendulum that is lowered from a predetermined
height to make contact with the specimen serves as the test instrument.
By comparing the variation in the pendulum's height before and after the
fracture, it is possible to determine the amount of energy that was
transmitted to the material.
 The English engineer Edwin Gilbert Izod first defined the test procedure in
1903, and as a result, the Izod impact test was named in his honor. With a
few noteworthy exceptions, such as how the specimen is secured into the
apparatus, which is vertically with the notch facing the pendulum, the test
apparatus and specimen design are quite similar to Charpy impact. The
sample is then affected by the pendulum at a specific location above the
notch. Izod impact testing is distinct from Charpy impact in that it can be
done on either plastic or metallic samples.
2. Discuss the procedures to determine the impact strength of steel material using
‘Izod Impact Testing’ technique. Draw the diagram of the Izod Impact Testing
Machine. (20 points)

2.a A safe test position for the striking vice type hammer should be acquired.
2.b Lock the striking hammer in place at its highest point.
2.c Set the machine's indicator to zero and release the hammer.
2.d The indicator stops moving when the hammer swings, breaking the specimen, and
the pendulum falls back.
2.e The indicator value should be noted in its uppermost position.
2.f Put the hammer in the idle position now and carry on with the operation.

Testing Machine. (20 points)

3.a Verify that the hammer with an anvil for striking is in the safe test position.
3.b Set the striking hammer's handle in the highest position and lock it there.
3.c Set the machine's indicator to zero and release the hammer.
3.d When the specimen is broken, the hammer swings, the indicator stops, and the
pendulum falls back.
3.e The indicator value should be noted in its uppermost position.
3.f Put the specimen on a stand or anvil so that the hammer blow will be directed away
from the notch.
